TMJ 098: How To Increase Your Efficiency In Med School | Doc Talks

Increasing your studying and efficiency in med school does not mean giving up on the fun stuff.

I have talked a lot about how to be efficient, improving your studying and generally how to be the best med student you can be. What's important to remember is the type of med student "YOU" can be and not anyone else's vision of you as a med student.

When your last class ends, you go home and do other things that you love and a part of who you are. Your studies and eventually, work as a doctor is not your entire life.

Yes, there's a lot of work in med school from the very first day of your first year all the way through graduation. Managing time and accepting you will never know everything but continue to try anyway, throughout your career is really important.

But, it's also important to schedule in time for yourself. It will force you to find ways to do your work and fit in some personal time. We are not robots and do work 24/7, we are our own med student and future doctors that work really hard and also have time for other things we care about.

So in this episode of the Doc Talks series, we talk to Jasmine and discuss increasing your efficiency in med school while still having a life and also tips to studying anatomy!

TMJ 096: How To Study For The MCAT | Doc Talks

TMJ 096: How To Study For The MCAT | Doc Talks

Sometimes there's too much pressure on pre-meds on coming up with a plan on how to study for the MCAT. Getting into med school

I get it, it's one of the many important tests you have to take on your way to becoming a doctor. But under all that pressure, is a plan that has to be made on how to study.

There are lot of ways to study, resources that everyone seems to be recommending and all-in-one study systems that have worked for some but not all. There is no way with a pre-med's student's schedule let alone a med student's schedule can you go through all that info and figure out what to do, it's impossible.

In this video we talk to, Jes and she is really curious about what to do to prepare for the MCAT. We get into several things that you have to accept before studying; that you sometimes there's too much info than the time allotted to study them and you will almost never get 100% of everything in the resource on your first try.

I also discuss a way to think about studying where it's not always the time you spend, but what you do with that time and, spoiler alert, it will involve a timer.

So, learn how to study for the MCAT and what I would have done had I been in Jes' shoes in this latest Doc Talks!

TMJ 094: How Do You Study During First Year Of Med School | Doc Talks

TMJ 094: How Do You Study During First Year Of Med School | Doc Talks

How do you study during your first year of med school!?

As a new med student, it can be really tough to start to find your footing and see what works. What got you through premed, doesn't always take you all the way to med school graduation, residency match, and even past Step 1.

Histology, Pathology, Krebs Cycle and many other topics can take up a lot of your studying time. And by the time you get to your rotations, there's, even more, to take on and you're actually there with the patient rather than scenarios and diagrams on a test.

This is why it's important to invest in having a study system that works for you early on. You can use it to tackle many different topics, learn what you have to learn and get ready for the next test

Christy is a first-year med student who is in the process of going through the early years of med school and she has a lot of questions that I've encountered as well as my students about how to study for the first year of med school.

Check out how Anki, question banks and a timer can get you prepared for the next test in this latest Doc Talks video!

TMJ 093: How Do You Overcome A Low Step 1 Score and Get Into Residency | Doc Talks

How do you overcome a low Step 1 Score and still get into residency!?

Step 1 has turned into more of a pass/fail exam and if you don't perform well, there are still things you can do to be able to reach residency. Step 2 is key and being prepared for that and performing is really important.

But outside of exams, you have to reflect on yourself and the work you've done. Why do you want to be a doctor? What are other experiences you've had that are transferable to being a doctor!? You might not know it but being a captain in a sports team or leading your organization can help your cause and really do help you in your career in medicine.

These are the experiences that you put together to help you get that residency. Your exam scores are one thing but your own unique experiences are another. You're not completely dealing with robots that have complicated algorithms, you're dealing with people and it's up to you to show whoever is evaluating your profile, that you're a match for their open position.

TMJ 092: Most Expensive Medical Schools Tuitions [Full Breakdown]

TMJ 092: Most Expensive Medical Schools Tuitions [Full Breakdown]
It's not breaking news to anyone that med school is expensive. But which ones are the most expensive and what institution holds the number 1 spot with over $68,000.00+ in tuition per semester!? Here's a breakdown!

Becoming a doctor is not cheap. Going to college for pre-meds alone can bury you in student debt for years, even decades if things don’t go as planned. Then you are off to med school where there's a lot more to pay for and I am not just talking about the tuition. You have to wait years from premed all the way to residency to get a good paycheck as a medical doctor.

That's why it's really important to talk about the tuition rates of med schools. Early, you have to plan out where you want to go and weigh, not just the reputation and quality of education, but also the cost of living.

I owed over $190,000.00 in loans after graduating although I went to a medical school known for giving a great education for the price. To some, that's a lot, but to others, it's nothing if they went to a med school in Boston or somewhere in Southern California.

Let's talk about the most expensive med school tuitions and what you should consider when applying. Because who knows? Maybe you are about to apply to a med school that's going to burden you for more years than you can imagine.

TMJ 091: Hardest Medical Schools To Get Into [Full Breakdown]

TMJ 091: Hardest Medical Schools To Get Into [Full Breakdown]

As pre-meds plan how to get into med school, they may think that some institutions are just beyond reach whether it be due to their acceptance rate, too high of an MCAT, GPA requirements, high tuition costs or others. But what may surprise you is that some of the hardest medical schools to get into, are not what you think. In fact, you can be thinking about going to one of the pickiest med schools in the country and you just don't know it.

Researching and preparing for your med school application is nerve-wracking. A lot of future med students dream of going to Harvard for med school but only stop at dreaming because it just seems impossible for many reasons. But think of this; as impossible as Harvard may seem, you could be confidently thinking about how feasible and easy it is to study in a school on this list and didn't know that they are far more selective.

Whether you want to continue applying to Harvard or the moonshots of your institutions, remember that there are other med schools out there. It's not the end of the world. You can get a good med school education and become a doctor in another institution and continue the M.D. Journey that you've always wanted.

TMJ 090: How To Prepare For Step 3 and Residency | Doc Talks

As 4th year med students say goodbye to med school and look ahead to the USMLE Step 3 and residency, a lot of questions come up. “How do you prepare for what’s next?”, “What is Step 3 like?” “How much time should I spend on the boards for residency?”.

So, at the start of this series, we'll talk to real people in different paths of their M.D. journey and talk all about the life of and becoming a medical doctor!

In the first video of Doc Talks, we talk to Jen, a 4th year medical student who is looking to take on residency in pediatrics. She asks about what to do to get ready for Step 3 and what to expect as an intern and as a medical resident.

Jen and really, no med student taking the test should ever feel like they can't prepare and get too overwhelmed by the weight of the results. Remember, it's not really clear how they grade these. And the fact that she and other med students are looking to plan accordingly for their test date with enough review time, is in itself an advantage.

I shared some of my med school tips on the exam from when to schedule Step 3, the amount of time needed to prepare, focusing on bio stats, and many more in this video. I also give her some of my thoughts about what interns and residents should think about with regards to the boards.

TMJ 089: How I Use Notion To Simplify My Life [Step-By-Step]

TMJ 089: How I Use Notion To Simplify My Life [Step-By-Step]

Productivity and time-management YouTubers have praised the powerful app Notion for what it’s done for their lives. Now, I am going to take you to a full breakdown on how I use it to simplify my life - from working as an internal medicine resident, coaching my students, up to my daily routine and everyday life.

Like you, I heard about Notion from the Ali Abdaals and Thomas Franks of the YouTube productivity world. And they presented it as a simple and easy-to-use tool that helps them get more things done, run their business and work as efficiently as possible. At first, it wasn’t as easy as they made it out to be with complicated databases and fancy links, but you do get the hang of it and can be a great addition to your productivity stack.

I take you through how I use the note-taking and organizing features to make it easy to brain dump ideas for work at the hospital, programs for TheMDJourney and Med Elite Academy, and errands for the day. The clean and user-friendly interface makes it very conducive to have all your ideas for future tasks and goals in one place.

Then, I show you how some of these ideas can be turned into and categorized as tasks. Not every task is important. It's great to be able to have a way to see all the to-dos of the day and determine where you should put your focus on, which to leave off for the next day and strategize to tackle bigger tasks. When going through this, you need fewer distractions and a focused notes environment to decide what you’re going after and how your days look like and Notion delivers on that.

Learn how you too can use Notion to simplify your busy life in this latest episode of the TMJ Show!

TMJ 088: How To Use Anki Like A Pro [Full Step-By-Step Walkthrough]

One of the most powerful study tools out there for med students is Anki. But how do you use it like the pros who get honors?

There is no such thing as the perfect study tech stack. Everyone will have their own note-taking, flashcard, calendaring and reminder apps. For flashcards in particular, there’s Quizlet, Brainscape and many others. But what I often caution my students is to be careful about using tools just because your friends or someone you read or watch recommends it. Not every flashcard app fits the way you study. In fact, the wrong one can take up so much valuable time for studying.

Anki is an awesome app that I’ve used in med school all the way to this very day as a medical resident. Yes, it is not for everyone, but for those who are gearing towards getting better grades, having less stress studying and improving retention, then Anki can most definitely help.

Yet, it's not enough to just learn how to use it; you should also learn how others used it to blend with their studying. The exact same way I used Anki to graduate with honors and to keep up with my M.D. journey as an internal medicine resident may not work for you. But there are pieces and ideas that you can steal and implement to level up your studying and be the best med student you can be.

TMJ 087: The World's Richest Doctors

TMJ 087: The World's Richest Doctors

How can you save money while in residency?

Saving money as a medical resident may sound unrealistic. After all, you just spent years studying as a pre-med and then a medical student and took out loans worth $100,000.00+ more or less.

If you’re lucky, maybe someone sponsored or paid for your education, or got a good-paying job that fit your schedule in med school. But in a lot of cases, you’re probably staring at a big bill and thinking about a lot of hard work you have to put moving forward.

Nobody is a pre-med, a med student or a doctor 24/7. You have a life, where you aspire to have financial stability, buy a house or a car, to be with a partner and maybe even have kids, or at least get the latest LeBron merch. But to do any of that, you need to learn how to save money.

So, in this latest TMJ Short, I talk about how you can start saving even during residency. I also share my own experience that has helped me move forward with my financial goals, with a strategy that requires you to think backwards. (edited)

TMJ 086: What It's Like Running A Code

TMJ 086: What It's Like Running A Code

What is running a code actually like!?

You see it a lot in movies and have probably heard about it through actual doctors whether you’re a pre-med, med student or outside of the medical field.

One of the most dramatized parts of being a doctor is running a code, especially code blue. A team of medical staff from doctors, nurses and others drop everything they are doing when they get paged or called to rush to a room to stabilize a patient. They do what they can by doing CPR, giving medications, checking their pulse, repeating the process and hope the patient recovers.

There are a lot of emotions in a scene like that. As someone who has led the running of a code, there is some truth to that and even more. Sometimes you’re running in that room with little to no information about the patient. There’s a lot of commotion going on and you have to delegate specific rules from the timer to the person who gets the meds. Occasionally, you also ask the family to stay outside, all with the purpose of making sure the patient is stabilized.

That can sound nerve-wracking. But what’s often not mentioned is what happens after you get the patient’s heart rate back to normal. Depending on the situation, the patient may still need some form of medical attention.

Running a code is one of the biggest challenges of being a doctor. But, I can tell you that there are always lessons to be learned from each patient experience that can help you handle the next one better.

I talk about how I run a code from assigning roles and ordering medicine to the mindset I have from start to finish. That and many more to help you prepare for your first or next code!

TMJ 085 How EXACTLY I Became A Doctor

TMJ 085 How EXACTLY I Became A Doctor

I talk a lot about getting into med school, USMLE Step 1, 2, & 3, studying, life of a medical resident, how to become a medical doctor and the general M.D. Journey, but I haven’t discussed how exactly I became a doctor.

I started thinking about a career in medicine when I was younger. I thankfully did not have any major medical issue, but people close to me did. The impact of seeing what a doctor can do in helping someone I cared about, left a lasting impact in me to consider it.

As of this video, I am currently a 2nd year internal medicine resident. How I got from being the kid seeing what physicians can do to where I am right now took a lot of time, money, sacrifice and effort. I look back and think about how the tests I took, the money I spent and hours I used led up to where I am going.

My journey to becoming a doctor started in high school where I fought for the grades I needed to get into a good college and major. The student loans I had even with scholarships were discouraging, but I did get even more financial help. The different extra-curricular activities that allowed me to learn more hard and soft skills as well as shore up a great resume for med school took a lot of energy.

Now, I am done with med school, paying off a significant amount of med school debt, finished all 3 USMLE exams from Steps 1-3, and finally getting paid and continuing to carve out my medical career. I think it was and continues to be all worth it.

The path to becoming a doctor isn’t always a romantic one. Some people only see the high salaries, treating and helping the sick, and our lack of sleep. Those can all be a part of a doctor’s story, but how you get there can vary significantly.

Not everybody’s debt is all the same. Some give up their social lives until after medical school. And it’s possible to go through all of that and think that medicine isn’t for you. Luckily for me, while there were and still are challenges ahead, I am grateful that it’s been working out and looking ahead to the future of my M.D. Journey!

So check out how I got my M.D. in this latest episode of the TMJ Show!

TMJ 084: How To Use Picmonic To Study For USMLE Step 1 [Get A 250+]

TMJ 084: How To Use Picmonic To Study For USMLE Step 1 [Get A 250+]

If you’re a med student getting ready for USMLE Step 1, I understand there’s a lot of pressure on how to prepare for the exam. Let me help you lessen the stress by introducing a resource that can eliminate the guesswork of where to begin and what to study, and get you a step closer to 250+, Picmonic!

As a medical resident who has gone through all the exams from Step 1 to 3, I remember what it was like to study for Step 1 and it was before the results became pass/fail. I can see how someone can get lost in the preparation. It doesn’t help when you hear stories of Step 1 questions continue to make an appearance as far as Step 3.

So, a lot of medical students like yourself, google and search YouTube about the Krebs Cycle, read the First Aid book, and so on. You spend hours in one resource, do study groups and all-nighters on some topics, but still feel like you’re not doing enough.

Yet, you don’t know which topic to spend more time on. Not all study materials are accessible or help with retention. Worst of all, you think you’re ready but on test day, you end up forgetting everything. It’s terrifying and there’s nothing else you can do by then.

It’s not too late! I’ve coached several medical school students and something I’ve noticed from them is that resource selection is essential. Don’t get drawn into what everybody else is using, think about what is easy to use, high-yield, and gets you quizzed to be ready.

One resource that I highly recommend is Picmonic.

It will save you so much time on what to study with their playlists, be efficient with what you need to know, and help you engage with the materials making them far more memorable by the time you take a seat and start answering.

How does Picmonic do all of that? Check this video out in this Picmonic-filled episode of the TMJ Show!

TMJ 083: How To Study For Step 3 With Residency [Step-By-Step]

TMJ 083: How To Study For Step 3 With Residency [Step-By-Step]

The USMLE Step 3 is still fresh in my mind. After studying, taking and thinking about how the test went, all while doing residency, there definitely are a lot of lessons learned.

After Step 1 and Step 2, med students already have an idea on how USMLE exams go and how to prepare for them. By the time Step 3 rolls in, you’d have close to a complete plan of which resources to trust and what strategies work for you.

But this time, you’re no longer just a med student, you’re a medical resident juggling your clerkship rotations and Step 3 preparations. It may seem impossible, but you can absolutely plan out, study and get through Step 3!

Planning isn’t always everything, but it can most certainly help as you take the exam on. I will share with you how important having a light rotation schedule is, and having one great resource like UWORLD can be in forming a cohesive plan to get you ready for test day.

TMJ 082: USMLE Step 3 Reaction [How Hard Was It]

TMJ 082: USMLE Step 3 Reaction [How Hard Was It]

    I finally took Step 3!

I had my views on how easy or hard certain parts of the test would be. The test affirmed some of those, but had some pleasant surprises along the way.

We’ve talked a lot about Step 1 and Step 2, the different ways to study and resources a med student can use. So, when Step 3 came along, I had a better idea on how to prepare and what resources to trust. Sometimes, you can get all the way to this point and be all-test-out to take on another one.

One thing I can tell you that I wish I could have planned out better before taking the exam is; I should have taken it during a lighter clinical rotation. My busy residency work in the ICU definitely took out time I could have had for more questions, case studies, and a review of Step 1.

Step 3 has its challenges and pleasant unexpected questions, but it merits the 1-2 month’s worth of reading, going through a lot of UWORLD questions, reviewing bio stats and more!
I get into Step 3, and my reaction and thoughts afterwards in this episode of the TMJ Show!
