Pollies: MPs Megan Woods and Mark Mitchell on the time taken to count special votes

Politicians from opposing sides want special votes to be counted more quickly.

Special votes and the final election result will be released in nine days, giving the final makeup of Parliament.

National and ACT can govern alone on current numbers, but those may change once November 3rd comes around.

Labour's Megan Woods told Mike Hosking that she doesn't see how allowing people to enrol on the day adds a week to counting specials.

    National's Mark Mitchell agrees.

He said the Justice Committee will conduct an electoral review.

Megan Woods: Energy and Resources Minister on the replacing coal with electricity at NZ Steel's Gleenbrook site

Megan Woods: Energy and Resources Minister on the replacing coal with electricity at NZ Steel's Gleenbrook site

The Energy Minister says we can't under-estimate how effective the Government's plan to reduce emissions in the steel sector will be.

NZ Steel will receive up to 140 million dollars to help replace half the coal used at its Glenbrook site with electricity.

It will cut emissions by 800-thousand tonnes on day one, the equivalent of taking every Christchurch car off the road.

Megan Woods told Kate Hawkesby that any plan to rely on the Emissions Trading Scheme alone wouldn't work.

She says to get the equivalent, the price of carbon emissions would need to increase four times.

Barry Soper: political editor on the Government making decisions on oil and gas exploration

Barry Soper: political editor on the Government making decisions on oil and gas exploration

The Government may be open to oil and gas exploration continuing in the next parliamentary term.

Energy and Resources Minister Megan Woods said today that the Government was deferring making decisions on the future of onshore oil and gas exploration.

Megan Woods also said that she isn't committing to any further block offers and will revisit this issue in the next parliamentary term, where there will be a better evidence base for future demand.

Political editor Barry Soper says it's unlikely there will be much interest at this stage, as most companies would have shut down oil and gas exploration in New Zealand a long time ago.
