Childhood is the foundation for one's future. Joy, conflict, trauma - all of these things lead to the person we each become. Or do they? On this week's episode, our story leads us into an ongoing debate: nature vs. nurture. Where do YOU believe your personality stems from?

Enjoying SMIRK? Then please be sure to share the show through your social media outlets!

Welcome to Smirk. A podcast that covers society and culture through a storytelling lens. Part creative writing, part discussion, and always interesting. Each week our hosts brings an original story to the show, which is immediately followed by a light-hearted discussion on the author's moral or theme.

These stories can cover any topic the host wants to discuss, it can be lighthearted or more serious. No one but the author knows if these tales are truth or fiction, and part of the fun is guessing while you're listening before the reality is made clear.

We want to hear from you! If you want to share YOUR story, join the conversation by writing in to mystory@smirkpodcast.com, and include your moral, or you can let us guess at it. This is the podcast that looks at truth, fiction, and reality. With a Smirk.

    Movie Meltdown - Episode 428

This episode we pay tribute to just some of the celebrities that we lost in 2017. And while we try to decide what our theme song and montage for our lives would be, we also discuss... a Blue Steel Selfie, he would write everything long-form, the convention bubble, I’m just going to tell another brief story where I’m the bad guy, digging ditches, the greatest story ever told, fiction about real people, Keith Moon, won ten Obie Awards, you’re supposed to read those dates, Cybill Shepherd, industrial films, Walk Hard, it’s quiet… it’s slow… it’s poetic, was an elevator operator and a truck driver, it’s nothing but a series of anecdotes… sectioned by theme, going to film school… in the trenches, deep black negativity, where so much of your performance is non-verbal, it’s funny… all these people they mean something to us… but we don’t really know them, she looks like she should be in an Errol Morris documentary, the sweet old man who showed me around Los Angeles, even Mr. T’s got a mom, a ghost committing suicide, a resume builder, some sort of outlaw who becomes a priest, he was problematic before anybody was problematic, where he studied animal husbandry, I’m calling you out John de Lancie, his emotional service support animal, Are you Anybody?, I just want to bedazzle things all day long, walk around happy… because you have no idea what your job is, a cutting edge woman in the working force, capitalizing on this famous figure, The Circle, the end of the studio system, it’s one of those performances to where… it made me fall in love with that actress… immediately, then twenty years later they invented a world wide web, introduction of artificiality, Dream a Little Dream, the only film geek at school, the one that didn’t sleep with him, Scooby-Doo, M. Emmet Walsh, you’re all dead – there’s no prize, trying to fight the spunk, it was an existential crisis, you have to try to collaborate with people, how do they figure out how to ruin every job, hey… musical television is a great idea, what horse are you riding, why don’t you try journalism, can we just have a little margin of hate… for people that we just haven’t heard the story yet, that weird turning point in film, Joanie loves Chachi destroyed my concept… basically of everything, more like a simile, Turner Classic Movies,  an inner-city pediatrician that believes in hug therapy, David Lynch, Neil Young doo-wop, something evangelical, The Battle of Okinawa, I’m feeling lucky and why do I always have to be the dark one?!

“He literally lived every day of his life exactly the way he wanted to… so it’s hard to be sad about his passing. Because he did it right.”

    Remembering - Adam West

    Remembering - Adam West

No matter what version of Batman you respond to the most, their would be hardly any film and television interpretations of the Caped Crusader without one Mr Adam West. Adam was a consummate professional and brought the first true testament that superheroes could be more than just characters on a page. We will all miss his presence and his undeniable talent. Rest in peace.

New To You ep213: Jason Golliher

New To You ep213: Jason Golliher
New To You Ep213: Remembering Jason Golliher (1976-2016)

The week we take a pause from our standard fare.  John, Jules and Keith are joined this week by their long time friend Jason Plapp to reflect on the recent passing of a friend.  This is the first time we’ve recorded remotely so we could include Plapp from his home in Los Angeles where he works in the animation industry.

This is a deluxe episode where we introduce you to our friend through the things he introduced to us.

Jason Golliher, who went by Jase or Jayse, for a time by Ari or Artie, and most recently Jackson Hall, was an artist and musician who we had the good fortune to know and befriend in college. He played a pivotal part in Keith, Plapp, John and Jules meeting.

“Golden Microphone” a piece from Jayse AKA Jackson Hall 2010. You can find more of his work on his portfolio site.

PART 1: Keith - Grant Lee Buffalo “Mighty Joe Moon” Album 1994

Keith recalls an album that Jayse introduced him to soon after they met.

You can listen on Spotify, purchase on iTunes or Amazon, and access through any number of music services.

Some of the tracks we discuss in the show:

    Mighty Joe Moon

    Last Days of Tecumsah

    Lone Star

PART 2: Plapp - The Guitar & Gram Parsons (Musician 1946-1973)

Plapp recalls how Jayse introduced him to notion of learning the guitar, and further that Jayse introduced him to the music of Gram Parsons

From “Sweetheart of the Rodeo” with the Byrds, through his role in the Flying Burrito Brothers, and onto his solo work and collaborations with Emmylou Harris, Jayse shared the music and storied life of this artist with Plapp.

You can listen to some of his great music here:

Sweetheart of the Rodeo (Spotify, iTunes, Amazon)

Flying Burrito Bros. (Spotify, iTunes, Amazon)

He was one of the greats, but don’t take our word for it:

PART 3: Jules - “Bitch Betta Bite Back” (Mixtape Winter 1997

Jules recalls how Jayse whipped up a mixtape in his Brighton apartment.

PART 4: John - The Art of Drinking

John recalls that in college Jayse had turned 21 soon after we all met. He bucked the trend of college drinking being a ‘just to get drunk’ activity.

Jayse introduced us to PBR and extolled the virtues of whiskey as a way of adding smoke to your singing voice.  Jayse loved to share his Tennessee roots: namely the music, hospitality and the whiskey. Our Hollis Place home where at least a half dozen of us lived our last year of college. There just inside the right hand door, on the right hand side was Jayse’s room- that first floor window on the right was his. Jayse loved having people in his room to share stories, drinks, laughter and music.  Just down the block from our Allston home was this dive bar. This was a place Jayse and ‘the family’ loved to go when entertaining at home got stale. A painting by Jayse on corrugated cardboard.  A self portrait.

    ______________________________________________________________________

    A little more about Jayse:

While living in Tennessee Jayse had a number of bands in college and highschool, a tradition he carried when he moved to Boston to attend the Art Institute of Boson and a passion he continued when he moved to the Carolina’s after college. Jayse in Tennessee with his band “Bourgeois Pop Machine.” Jayse is on the left. Jayse on guitar, Chris Wilkerson on the bass. The Tennesee Boys in the Comm. Ave apartment. Left to Right: Keith, Shelby, Plapp, and Jayse. Brighton, MA ~1998 Brisco Darlin’ Allston, MA ~’99: Back- Left to Right: Jayse, Nick, Keith, Tim. Front - Left to Right: John Bickford, Plapp, McCann. ‘Beach Party’ Brighton, MA ~’97. Corrina, Jayse and Plapp. Halloween Brighton, MA ~’97/’98. Jayse and Plapp. Jayse in N.C. - A little story behind this one: Jayse introduced Ted Hobgood to the comedy of Patton Oswalt. They then started a series of photos where they catalogued all the things that were mentioned in Patton’s comedy routines. The project was discovered and they were tapped to create a slideshow style video of all the things Patton mentioned in his comedy set “FInest Hour.” This short video was included on the bonus features of the comedy special DVD. Jayse produced the music for the video. You can purchase the special on iTunes or Amazon. We have Jayse to thank for introducing us to vast amounts of music, art, movies, books, and the spirit of doing. He constantly introduced himself to people and in turn introduced those people to the things he loved.

    214: People Who Died

    Movie Meltdown - Episode 214

This week we welcome our guest Chris from Surreelfilm, as we all attempt to tackle our topic for The Grind. We ask... 'What performers who passed away in 2012 will you miss the most?' Since the Oscars are bad about overlooking people during the 'In Memoriam' segment, we thought we'd discuss the people we were sad to lose in 2012, and focus on the roles that we remember them from the most.

And somewhere along the way we mention... The Pink Panther, All the Marbles, Shaft, Gone with the Wind, Husbands, Major Dundee, Convoy, the 70's guitar riff, Goodfellas, Road House, I'm getting my game shows mixed up, how to properly address Whoopi Goldberg, O Brother, Where Art Thou?, Two Moon Junction, SCTV, Quartet, outdated cowboys, The American, playing the same character, Star Wars, Fat City, Dementia, it looked like a fun slide, the power dynamic of how you are supposed to talk to the squares, Two and a Half Men, 12 Angry Men, Rocky Horror Picture Show, The Muppet Movie, A Face in the Crowd, The Lord of the Rings, Pink Motel, gravel-voiced actors, Planet of the Apes, you hate these people... you hate the whole city, The Harlem Globetrotters, meeting your wife on a game show, SubZero, Gimme a Break!, it just screams second unit, Coal Miner's Daughter, Ride the High Country, Willard, The Princess Bride, The Forbidden Zone, The Dick Cavett Show, Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid, The Monster Squad, The Ladykillers, having to kill a guy on Christmas, Scooby Doo, The Running Man, Phantom of the Paradise, The Poseidon Adventure, having your legs amputated, Saint Jack, The Wild Bunch, Mermaid Man, technical illustrator, Batman and Robin, Marty, repeating what other people are saying, Pride and Prejudice and auditioning for Hollywood Squares.

"This year was actually debilitating for me..."
