    Five Books: Parashat Miketz

    Five Books: Parashat Miketz

The ninth portion of Torah brings a whirlwind of emotions to its protagonists, not to mention to us, as readers. The long-awaited resolution of the profound family divide that has existed since the story of the pit seems to evaporate as Joseph reveals himself and the men are reconciled. There is, of course, one man who is not yet in Egypt for this reunion, but it will not be long until Jacob, their father and our patriarch, arrives. But, in near perfect contrast, the gruelling famine that Joseph had foreseen continues, unrelentingly. This is almost the end of the Genesis adventures and the story is set up perfectly for a glorious conclusion.

    Hanukkah - Feast of Dedication

    Hanukkah - Feast of Dedication

Hanukkah this year (2022) begins on the evening of December 18 and is celebrated for eight days. While it is not one of the Levitical Feasts outlined in the Torah, it is an historical feast celebrated by Jews worldwide, and even Yeshua (Jesus) recognized it. In this episode Jeffrey D. Miller and Rabbi Ted Simon discuss the history of the feast, it's modern day traditions, and it's spiritual significance for all believers. messianicminutes.com

The Mystery of Chanukah and Yeshua with Rabbi Jason Sobel

The Mystery of Chanukah and Yeshua with Rabbi Jason Sobel

Everybody loves a good origin story, and in this episode, Rabbi Jason Sobel describes Chanukah's origin (Hanukkah). We can sum up the essence of this Jewish holiday in two words: fighting and lighting. This celebration restores our hope, faith, and trust that our God is true to His word!

The light of Chanukah points to the light of Yeshua-Jesus the Messiah. Yeshua's light lives in you. You are the light. Have Courage and be strengthened, He is with you!

Did you know that while Jesus never celebrated Christmas, He did celebrate Chanukah? Did you know that every significant event in Jesus’ life occurred on a Jewish holiday? Perhaps it would be helpful for us to think of these holidays not so much as Jewish, but God’s. These are God’s appointed times and, consequently, are relevant to all of God’s people. An examination of the origins of Chanukah will build your faith and spark a light in your soul that will shine brightly in a darkened world.

    One final picture.

As you will hear in this PODCAST, there is embedded within the pages of the Old Testament one standout picture (one among so many) that we must consider together.

50 chapters were devoted to the painting of this one picture. (By way of contrast, do you remember how many chapters are devoted to painting the picture of the creation of the world? Two!)

When it came to painting the picture of Christ dying for our sins once for all time, God—forgive the cliché—spared no expense in painting this one.

This podcast—my stuttering, stumbling, verbal depiction of this painting—is singularly dedicated to the enrichment of your soul.

    Enjoy!

    23: Hanukkah

    23: Hanukkah

Today we kick off our month-long holiday extravaganza, with the first holiday on our calendar: Hanukkah! Or, as the Rugrats say: Chhhhhanukkah. We've got lots of discussion of this underrepresented-in-TV holiday, and we've got a lot of general discussion about the obnoxiousness but also the adorableness that is Seth Cohen, and The O.C. in general. California, here we come.

*Note: Something conspired against us and Hannah's rating for the "tradition" category for the Rugrats was lost! (It's a 3).

Barry Rabin, co-host of WCHE1520AM's Friday Morning Magazine.  From Adam Sandler’s famous Hanukkah song, 'tis the musical season! But could hitting the high notes with your best falsetto or operatically belting out your favorite carol be hazardous to your voice? Katherine Skovira, an opera singer and Artistic Director of SoundLAB and voice instructor at Taylor’s Music chimes in.  And whether for Hanukkah, Kwanza, Christmas or New Years, if the gift of wine has become like a tired fruitcake?  Bill Kuhn, Director of Operations at Half Time has some great ways the sparkle and bubbly excitement of the holidays is bottled and bowed?

Flashback to Dec 23rd! The 2016 Audio Advent Calendar Remembered

Flashback to Dec 23rd! The 2016 Audio Advent Calendar Remembered

In November of 2016, an intrepid cast, band, and crew entered North Hollywood, California's El Portal Theatre, and set up for the brilliant challenge of recording twenty-five short, holiday-themed stories before a live audience. Like an advent calendar, but with less religious-affiliation and only slightly less chocolate, the 2016 Audio Advent Calendar was born. It was too good to hear just once.

A very young child shares her holiday for the first time, in “A Chanukah Story,” written by Judy Goldstein and performed by Denny Siegel. #holiday #Hanukkah #Chanukah #childhood #sharing #menorah #dreidel #candles

The Candlestick | Clue Series: Naughty Nursery Rhymes, Liberace, and Miss Scarlet (TSB079)

Welcome to The Story Behind: Clue Series. In every episode of this series, we talk about the history of one of the original weapons used in the game, “Clue.” This series may not be appropriate for all ages and listener discretion is advised.

Did you ever wonder why it’s tradition to blow out candles on your birthday? It actually goes back to the Ancient Greeks and burning candles in religious ceremonies, including to pay tribute to the goddess Artemis who is associated with the moon. They baked cakes to symbolize the shape of the moon and added candles to represent moonlight.

Though cakes are delicious, they can’t really be used as a weapon for MURDER. But another candleholder can ...

I’m your host, Emily Prokop, and this is The Story Behind The Candlestick.

The Clue Series Butler you heard at the beginning of the episode was played by Paul from Rick and Paul Heal the World.

Miss Scarlet imitations provided by Amy from the podcast Ladies Love Paul Rudd.

The role of Liberace was played by Craig from The Ultra Podcast. And Rub-A-Dub-Dub was read by Heather from her new podcast, Sunshine & PowerCuts, which is about her life off grid.
