    Human Trafficking (feat. Fr. Jeff Bayhi) | Retrospect Ep.122

    In this week’s episode we discussed human trafficking with Father Jeff Bayhi, who is the founder of Metanoia Manor. In 2018 he founded this faith-based residential facility which offers a place of refuge to female adolescent victims of human trafficking. We talk about some heavy stuff in this one and Father Jeff doesn’t pull any punches on this matter either, which is good because this needs to be talked about. I appreciate him taking the time to talk about it with us.

    Conservative Friends Bible Study of Mark #25 Mark Chapter 14 Verse 12 - 16

    Conservative Friends Bible Study of Mark #25 Mark Chapter 14 Verse 12 - 16

    In the beginning of Mark, Jesus chooses His disciples. This was unusual. Usually in ancient Israel a student would choose one’s teacher. Jesus underscores this variance in John 16:15, “You have not chosen me, but I have chosen you.”

                An extended discussion ensues over Jesus’ disciples calling Him “master” or “lord” (Greek: kyrios), The far deeper Greek meaning of “kyrios” is of one who is an absolute owner/master of someone or something. (“Kyrios” can also have a much simpler polite meaning as simply “mister”, or “sir”.)

               In today’s American society, there are a growing number of people who reject any use of the word “master” because of its close tie to American slavery. However, in the New Testament, calling Jesus one’s “Master/Lord” (and being a “slave” to Him) mean something very different. The popular objection to these words is given in ignorance of New Testament concepts. In no way is the biblical idea of Jesus being our Master (and we His slaves) forced servitude. We are voluntary slaves to Love . . . He is the God of Love. When we make ourselves slaves of Jesus, it is based on love for Him, and is completely voluntary on our part. We have freewill to leave the Master/slave relationship with Jesus at any time.

    Part of the problem grows out of our tendency to apply contemporary understandings of English to the King James Version (KJV) English of 400 years ago. In the KJV, the Greek word “servos” was translated correctly as “servant,” and had the very clear meaning of “slave” (and is closely related to “serf”, “servile”, “servitude” and (forced) military service.) However today, the word “servant” has a clearly voluntary understanding.

    Another extended discussion occurs on the true meaning of a word: Such meaning can be found not in the word itself, but only in the meaning behind the word. Thus, one must read the Holy Scriptures in the Spirit in which they were written. An excerpt from Isaac Pennington’s “Letter XVI is read in this context.

    Conservative Friends Bible Study of Mark #14 Chapter 09 Verse 01 - 08

    Conservative Friends Bible Study of Mark #14 Chapter 09 Verse 01 - 08

    In this episode, Henry introduces Mark 9:1-8 by reviewing the importance to early Friends of Mark 8:34 that if one wishes to become a true follower of Christ, the Messiah, one “must deny himself (i.e., renounce one's ego) and take up one's (inward) cross and (then come) follow Christ.” Early Friends believed that a continual inward crucifixion/execution/putting to death of all thoughts, words, desires and deeds not in conformity with God’s will must happen in the believer in order for one to be in alignment with God’s will.

    Mark 9:1, according to early Friends the first coming of Christ in oneself (the first appearance of Christ) is the awareness within the individual of his/her sinfulness before God. The Light of Christ shows this state to the individual. The second phase of this is a complete transformation of one’s mindset, one’s way of thinking (Greek: “metanoia”) in the believer, resulting in a total humble submission to God through a complete crucifixion/putting to death of “self" (ego) for Him. This transformation (“metanoia”) is the focus of the believer’s energies, with God’s help.

    In discussing scripture, Henry says that Robert Barclay wrote that the same Spirit of God who spoke to and through the various writers of the New Testament was and has continued to be active among humans . . . so much so that it is conceivable for us too today to speak with the same depth of authority as the writers of the New Testament, if and when we are in complete conformity with God’s will.  It is essential for us to continue to submit ourselves in obedience to the Holy Spirit. The words given to us in meeting for worship must be from Him and not from our human selves. Do we always hear perfectly? No.  But we need to continually be sensitive to His leading and to be willing to share only what He is speaking to us.

    Mark 9:2-8. The Greek word for the Latin/English “transfiguration" is “metamorphōsis”, a complete change in the form and shape of Jesus. “This is my beloved Son” is a special denotation given in reference to Jesus. A “son” is greater than a “prophet”. v. Hebrews 1:2. The "only begotten" [Son] is a translation of the Greek word “monogenēs” which means “unique" or "one of a kind".

    Notes by the host
    Metanoia = meta-no-ia = a transformation of one’s
    mindset, repentance

    Metamorphōsis = meta-morph-ōsis;
    Greek root: morph = shape, form; Latin: transfiguratio
    Metamorpheō v. to change form

    In biblical language “clouds” indicate an theophany (a manifestation of God) in biblical language.
    Voice from heaven points to the God given authority of a teacher
