    Episode 1400! Special Guests: Michael Emerson/Eunsoo Jeong/Qui Nguyen/MariNaomi!

Jimmy and Producer Joe celebrate their 1400th episode with some special guests via Zoom. Old pal Michael Emerson joins them to chat about his current show EVIL, the writer's strike and theater. Another great friend Eunsoo Jeong pops in to talk about her amazing zine KOREANGRY and kindly puts up with Jimmy's embarrassing rap for their aspiring K-Pop group.  Good buddy Qui Nguyen comes on to talk his writing/directing career in theater/TV/film, some Disney work and the return to NYC. And new friend MariNaomi (photo by Geoff Cordner) chats with them about her amazing new graphic novel I THOUGHT YOU LOVED ME. The hosts also discuss a few things they are enjoying lately in comics, TV and film. Can they hit another 1400 episodes? Keep on listening and supporting and maybe so! Also, get a hold of us!

    Thanks for listening!

Episode 1300 - A Panel of CNI Nerdiness w/ Special Guest Michael Emerson!

Episode 1300 - A Panel of CNI Nerdiness w/ Special Guest Michael Emerson!

It's our big 1300th episode and Jimmy and Producer Joe gather a panel of friends to discuss comics, TV, film, news and pop culture. Heidi MacDonald (EIC of THE BEAT) has been a good friend of them and the podcast for years now and always comes on to hang. 2 of her editors Avery Kaplan (PRISM COMICS) and Therese Lacson (NERDOPHILES) also join in on the rap session. Both have helped out with reviews and interviews over the last couple of years on CNI and are so appreciated! We had such a fun time talking away about the business of nerdy entertainment.

Also, at the last minute, Jimmy decides to text his old pal Michael Emerson to see if he was free to jump on for a short time. And yes, he was free! Always fun catching up with Michael as we just had a laid back chat about what he's working on, LOST, Comic-Con and more. It was a surprise to the other panelists and it turns out they were big fans and were delighted to have the chance to chat. Thanks again to Michael and the panel for hanging w/ Jimmy and Producer Joe on this anniversary episode! Also, get a hold of us!

    Thanks for listening!

    Evil (with guest Beau North!)

    Evil (with guest Beau North!)

CW: The episode we discuss does deal briefly with the topic of teen suicide

This week, we're joined by our first ever guest on Center of Weirdness: author and podcaster extraordinaire Beau North! And she's brought with her a show with extremely bad SEO. It's Evil, and on this episode there's a sinister song that will get stuck in your head forever and then will make you stab yourself in the ear. Beau walks us through the show and fills in some of the backstory. We also discuss our own personal earworm songs that we can't shake loose.

20 Years Later: Why Are Evangelicals (Still) Divided by Faith? (w/ Michael Emerson)

20 Years Later: Why Are Evangelicals (Still) Divided by Faith? (w/ Michael Emerson)

Hosts: Isaac Adams & Trillia Newbell

    Guest: Dr. Michael Emerson

Overview: "Know this, my beloved brothers: let every person be quick to hear, slow to speak, slow to anger." (James 1:19)

In this episode, Trillia Newbell and Isaac Adams talk with Michael Emerson, one of the authors of the seminal work, Divided by Faith. Published nearly 20 years ago, Divided by Faith examines evangelicals and the problem of race from a sociological perspective.

What personal and professional experiences led Dr. Emerson to write Divided by Faith? Why did he seek to live in a community where he was in the racial minority and send his kids to school where they're in the racial minority?  Dr. Emerson speaks to systemic and individual solutions to racial inequalities while providing both a warning and a word of hope to evangelicals today.

Having done thousands of interviews about this topic, Dr. Emerson encourages us to remember that "one of the ways we can addresses our history of racial division and inequality is to come together in our churches: to worship, to share leadership, to give voices to one another. If we can do this in authentic, biblical ways, it will make a profound difference." What do those authentic, biblical ways look like? Join us in this episode.

Scriptorium: Trey Grant, "Divided by Faith"

Trey Grant is Lead Pastor and founder of The Well Church in Keller, Texas, an intentionally multi-racial congregation that seeks to build a diverse community that worships Jesus together as one. I first met Trey after one of his first Sunday morning services, held in a local theater and attended by a small but diverse coterie of Christians. I was immediately entranced by Trey’s vision of a new kind of church for a sleepy corner of Red State Texas, and have sought to encourage him in his efforts to the best of my ability. We’ve shared a few books between us, but Trey recently offered to loan me his copy of “Divided by Faith: Evangelical Religion and the Problem of Race in America,” by Christian Smith and Michael Emerson. Together, we discussed the troubling racialization of America, the evangelical Church, and our hope for a brighter, more collaborative future for our children.
