Taking a break from reading the match reports of Dmitri Shostakovich, magazine editor Andy Lyons, writer Harry Pearson and host Daniel Gray discuss Last Days and Season Ends, from Basque delight to flip flops in Paisley, via the bonkers Bundesliga of 1999. Record Breakers brings a West Flanders wonder, WSC Deputy Editor Ffion Thomas takes us inside the pages of magazine issue 431 and we continue our giddy feature, The Final Third, in which a guest contributes a match, a player and an object to the WSC Museum of Football. Joining Dan as our visiting curator this time is The Times newspaper’s Scottish football correspondent, and author of Fergie Rises, Michael Grant.

    Reciprocity
    • Welcome to Bachademia! We are both in Iowa this week, we both have solid internet connections and we both are ready for Thanksgiving break next week. D3, anything else we need to make sure they know we are ready for?
    • Question of the week: If you had one veto for a city to move to, what city would be on the top of your list?
    • On my list of cities I would totally move to - Minneapolis/St. Paul is where the crew is heading! And they start off on a 1on1. She picks Joe, isn’t this a little useless? He already knows M/SP. I digress, they throw out the first pitch and go to her high school. They play basketball.
      • Michelle says Joe would have been her high school crush, is that a good thing?
      • Joe disclose that he had a serious injury that derailed his basketball career and it led to anxiety and depression. He even contemplated suicide. They both cried and really seemed to bond over their shared athletic experience. Their connection seems way strong. Thoughts?
    • Group date: The ultimate Viking! “Those dudes totally work at the Renaissance fare in Shakopee every fall” - Co-Host Kim. The dudes yell loud, threw a tree stump, ate fermented fish, and arm wrestled. D3 which of these events would you excel at? No surprise, Clayton (that young, strapping, square jawed football player) dominates the competition. So, they get some 1on1 time.
      • They talk about their love of family...all I could think is how Clayton may just be a robot made of the mean of every country song ever made after 2000. Thoughts on their connection?
      • Chris - was annoying and complained he didn’t get any time with Michelle. He is spiraling...I am here for it. Danielle, any insights into his downward trajectory?
    • Nayte gets a 1on1 and meets Michelle’s friends on a boat on a lake. So, that is way Minnesota. They talk about not being able to be themselves in relationships and being in toxic relationships. Danielle, thoughts on how previous relationships impact current and future relationships? Any insights?
      • Then Chris interrupts and warns Michelle not to make the wrong decisions and that she is being played. Michelle said she was caught off guard by Chris’s speech the other night. Chris said she was being “fake” to him during the group date. Michelle was at this point done and told Chris she didn’t need a man to speak for her and that it was over (America stands up and cheers) Farewell Chris, parting thoughts?
    • Cocktail party - Michelle has positive interactions with Rick, Brandon, and Rodney
      • She has a really awkward conversation with Martin. He goes off on Miami girls being high maintenance and Michelle challenges him. Danielle what are you seeing communication-wise here? Martin seemed to think it was a misunderstanding. He even went and told the guys as much.
      • Roses go to: Rick Olu, Brandon and Rodney. Casey and Leroy go home.
    • So who is left? Rick, Olu, Brandon, Rodney, Clayton, Nayte, Martin and Joe
      • Who is your front runner? Who is your dark horse?
    • Lessons learned?
    • Next week Bill will be in Ireland, so it will be co-host Kim, Danielle and maybe another special guest. Shoutouts?

    Steve Riley (L.A. Guns drummer)

    Steve Riley (L.A. Guns drummer)

Episode 80 - Steve Riley! Steve has played the drums for Steppenwolf, Keel and W.A.S.P. Of course he is most well known for being the drummer of L.A. Guns for over 30 years. In this episode we do a deep dive into Steve’s whole amazing career with all his bands. We’ll also talk about the new album he has out called “Renegades” with founding LA Guns member Kelly Nickels. He also explains why there are two versions of the band. He discusses some exciting movie projects he has coming out as well. And I get his reactions to the comments his ex bandmate Phil Lewis recently made in the press about Vince Neil. All this and more!

    245: Michael Grant

    245: Michael Grant

Design and journalism might seem like opposite fields, but technology has brought them closer together than ever before (especially over the past few years). How are journalists navigating this new landscape where news is now a designed experience? To gain some insight on this, I spoke with Michael Grant. He's the creative director for the San Francisco Business Times and is a current John S. Knight Journalism Fellow at Stanford University.

Michael an I talked about his current research work, and he shared what he's learned from working with HBCUs and his day-to-day work at the San Francisco Business Times. Michael really wants to make an impact in the world of design and journalism, and I think he's well on his way of making that happen!

Thanks to Regine Gilbert for the introduction!
