Ep. 552 – Young Ducks Team up with an Old Dawg for Ring-necks and Conservation

Dr. Mike Brasher recently joined the crew from Campus Waterfowl for an opportunity to reconnect with his roots, as he shared a soggy morning in the cypress swamp with current and former students of his alma mater, Mississippi State University. This episode, which originally aired on Campus Waterfowl, recaps an exciting ring-neck hunt and shines a spotlight on the passion this group has for waterfowl and wetland conservation through their work on the Mississippi State chapter of Ducks Unlimited. Joining on the podcast were Derek Christians of Campus Waterfowl and Drew Brown and Hunter Yelverton from Mississippi State. The group also discussed duckDNA, the exciting project that is connecting duck hunters with scientists to inform some of today’s most ground-breaking research.

A Deep Dive into Google Cloud's AlloyDB with Andi Gutmans| Cloud Wars Live

A Deep Dive into Google Cloud's AlloyDB with Andi Gutmans| Cloud Wars Live

    The Big Themes

    • Migration from legacy: AlloyDB is for enterprises looking to modernize their data states, particularly those transitioning from legacy databases to open-source offerings like PostgreSQL. Its role as "Postgres on steroids" addresses the challenges faced during this migration and ensures compatibility, scale, and performance.
    • Generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) alignment: Andi emphasizes that successful businesses will not only focus on developing GenAI skills but also on effectively managing their data states. The combination of data and AI technologies is pivotal for delivering highly differentiated, immersive customer experiences and therefore for delivering broader business outcomes.
    • Multi-Cloud Flexibility: AlloyDB's ability to operate in multi-cloud and hybrid environments, including Azure, AWS, on-premises, or at the edge, demonstrates its flexibility and acknowledgment of the reality that not all workloads will immediately move to Google Cloud.

The Big Quote: "Everyone's trying to rethink how they increase their differentiation, how they deliver better user experiences, how they can really exploit those technologies . . . The ones that are going to be successful, are not just the ones who build the AI or GenAI skill set, but [who] really have a good hold of their data state. And know how to bring those two worlds together."

S2E2: Would you "reverse migrate" & move to the country your parents are from?

S2E2: Would you "reverse migrate" & move to the country your parents are from?

Monah, Nushy Rose, and Sophie Hannah discuss whether they would ever "reverse migrate" and move to the country their parents and grandparents call home. Many families moved to the UK in search of a better life for their children but in a growing trend this generation is choosing to return to the motherland for the same reason. Are there better job prospects and more opportunities to build businesses in Africa and Asia than there are in the UK? Would you feel more accepted in the countries where you have heritage and the people look like you or be “othered” for being British? Do incentives like Ghana’s Year of Return put local people at a disadvantage? And what creature comforts would you miss if you moved? The ladies explore all angles in this episode of Ethnically Speaking and we want to hear your opinions in the comments below.

Do Coconuts Migrate? Coconuts: The Tree of Life, One of The Worlds Most Useful Trees

Do Coconuts Migrate? Coconuts: The Tree of Life, One of The Worlds Most Useful Trees

Do coconuts migrate? Yes, they do, but not by sparrows. It was actually humans who spread coconuts across the globe. Besides making great horse sounds when banged together, coconuts are extremely useful to humans. Coconuts are not just a new health fad, humans have been using coconuts since 3000 BCE, and not just for food and water.

In The Good, The Bad, The News

The Bad: There is an organization in PA that wants you to think rising CO2 is good for you and the planet. Nope. July 2021 was the hottest month ever in recorded history. Global climate change is caused by humans, and we need to stop it.

The Good: We can reverse global climate change, but we need to do it NOW. Then Jen talks about a preserved female cave lion cub named Sparta.

Before we get into coconuts, have you ever heard of the Order of the Sun, the sun worshiping coconut cult from the early 1900s? Well, a nudist German named August Engelhardt was convinced you could live off just coconut. Guess what, you can’t.

Coconut trees can grow up to 100 ft  ( 30 m) tall, and produce on average of 30 coconuts a year. They are naturally restricted to coastal areas in sandy, saline soils, and need direct sunlight and a lot of water to grow.

The coconut plant was distributed by early Austronesian voyagers, who carried them as a source of food and water, and  traded them throughout different cultures globally.

Listen now to learn about the lovely coconut tree, the tree of life.
