EP166 - How the passion for spirits combined with strategic execution made this cocktail vinegars brand a hit

EP166 - How the passion for spirits combined with strategic execution made this cocktail vinegars brand a hit

Don Morton is a bartender, WSET trained wine nerd, cocktail geek, fermentation enthusiast, and an eager host. After 10 years of working in public policy, Don founded Shrub District to bring a little more happiness into the world. Today, their cocktail vinegars (aka shrubs) and 'built cocktails' (A “built” cocktail is a cocktail you build in the same glass in which you serve it) are available online, restaurants and bars across the North East.

With a keen focus on quality and sometimes, seasonal ingredients, Don is determined to provide an exceptional experience while making it convenient for consumers to make a cocktail.

Some key takeaways from the interview:

    1. test the product after you have nailed down the formulation with real customers
    2. make sure that you have variety for folks otherwise you will leave money on the table
    3. finding partners that meet distribution challenges
    4. innovating in a category that's quite hot while not over extending on capacity and production

SPS012: Re-recording Mixers Aaron Levy and Ethan Beigel

Aaron Levy and Ethan Beigel became partners at Todd-AO and have continued their partnership at Smart Post Sound. They work out of one of our 4-wall facilities, Bang Zoom in Burbank.

They are very busy and last season mixed the equivalent of 9 days over the course of 7. Years ago they started out as sound recordists providing stage support for various stages, with Aaron starting out at Todd-AO and Ethan at Novastar after transplanting from New York.

Now they are one of the busiest mixing crews in Los Angeles. They both can edit and supervise projects and have a passion for whatever projects they’re on. Aaron and Ethan feel equally comfortable mixing hit network television shows or feature films and documentaries.

    Aaron Levy's credits include:

“The Flash”, “NCIS”, “NCIS: New Orleans”, “Supergirl”, “Turn”, “The Tomorrow People”, “Nikita”, “Workaholics”, “Drop Dead Diva” and a string of feature films including “Indiscretion”,
“The Young Messiah”, “Good Kill”, “Congratulations” and many more.

Episode 11 - Piracy and Digital Consumption of Music

Episode 11 - Piracy and Digital Consumption of Music
Episode 11 - Piracy and Digital Consumption of Music We start off talking about the movie "Downloaded" which is the story of Napster and Kenny describes what he thinks piracy did to the business and how it cut out mid-level bands. Will adds on to the same theme where budgets were dropped and how the audience doesn't see any value in music and especially downloaded music and the rationalizations that go with it. Phil also brings up the same idea that bands need to reach out to the fans and let them know what's happening and how we've spiraled down. Thanks for listening!!!! Episode 8 - Spec Mixes - Working for Free
Episode 8 - Spec Mixes - Working for Free We start by bringing up the idea of doing spec mixes or spec anything and what that means. Marc talks about not doing alot of these because he was taught early on to always be paid for doing gigs. Matt goes on to talk about working at a studio where he couldn't do spec work. Later on when he got his own studio, he was able to start getting spec work where he takes a piece of the artist. Kenny goes on to describe shootouts by major labels and the issues with them. Richard joins us from his German submarine and points out how politics become a bigger issue with shootouts more so than the actual mix. Episode 7 - Risk Management - Great Music vs. Getting Paid

Episode 7 - Risk Management - Great Music vs. Getting Paid
Episode 7 - Risk Management - Great Music vs. Getting Paid We start by reading a question involving the balance of dealing with choosing the music we work with based on budget vs. how good the music is and what are the repercussions of each. Kenny brings up how hard it is to build a career recording music that just isn’t very good. Even if the money is there. We then talk about how much to charge and the positives and negatives that go with being expensive vs. being the “budget guy”. Matt brings up “vanity” projects that never seem to end. And cost you more in the long run. Kenny brings up the idea that if you’re stuck in a rut of recording bad music, you can’t expect to keep moving forward. Kenny talks about production costs and being able to charge a flat fee vs. a day rate. Thanks for listening!!!!
