    On July 3, 2019, Refinitiv hosted the fifth Annual Lipper Fund Selector Forum at Canary Wharf. The first panel of the morning was "Future Directions for Fund Selection."

    In this video of the session, Jake Moeller, head of Lipper UK & Ireland Research at Refinitiv moderates a panel of fund selectors who outline their views on the changing nature and increasing prominence of fund research in light of the recent high-profile travails faced by Woodford Investment Management, increasing regulation and higher levels of scrutiny in the market.

    Panelists discussed their selection process, what makes a good fund investment, and how they are going to evolve to remain relevant in a changing product market.

    Victoria became Head of Research in December 2014 after joining Square Mile as Senior Investment Research Analyst. She is a member of its Executive Management Team which provides input into the strategic direction of the business.

    Victoria heads up the research team, in addition to focusing on fixed income fund research. Before joining Square Mile Victoria worked for Brewin Dolphin as a fund analyst specialising in fixed income investments.

    Prior to this Victoria was a Fixed Income Investment Manager at Rothschild Private Bank and a Fixed Income Analyst at Merrill Lynch. Victoria holds a BA (Hons) in Economics with French from the University of Durham, the Investment Management Certificate and in addition is a CFA and CAIA charterholder.

     About Richard Philbin

    With over a 20 year career including CIO of Architas and Head of Multi Manager at F&C, Richard is now Chief Investment Officer of Wellian Investment Solutions and Harwood Wealth Group plc which successfully listed on AIM in 2016.

    The company manages advisory and discretionary models as well as unitised fund of fund portfolios under the Discovery brand. He has developed many unique screening tools to assist with fund selection, asset allocation and portfolio construction and the adopted approach to portfolio construction is both innovative and successful.

    Richard has a degree in Financial Services.

    About Bish Limbu

    Bish Limbu is a founding member of the multi-asset, multi-structure, multi-manager team at Octopus Investments, which manages around £1.25bn for private clients and charities.

    About James Johnstone

    James joined RWC in March 2015 from Everest Capital to co-manage the Emerging and Frontier Markets team with John. He has 19 years of investment management experience. Before joining RWC, James was most recently responsible for frontier markets analysis and portfolio management at Everest Capital.

    He was also formerly co-founder and CIO of a multi-strategy Asian hedge fund and analyst at Gartmore and Schroders before that, where he focussed on emerging market equities.

    James holds an MA (Hons) in Classics and Modern Languages, Christ Church, Oxford University and speaks Russian.

    This panel covers the key due-diligence considerations that fund selectors address in their assessment of mutual funds. It is essential viewing for anybody who needs to understand how fund selectors operate and the current issues facing the fund industry today.

    About Lucy Walker

    Lucy is Head of Third Party Funds at Sarasin & Partners. She joined the firm as a fund analyst in 2011, became a fund manager in 2012 and was promoted to head of the team in 2016. Lucy manages £300m in a range of multi-asset portfolios and advises on £1.8 billion of assets in third party funds. Prior to joining Sarasin, she worked in the multimanager team at HSBC Global Asset Management. Lucy has a BSc Economics and is a CFA Charterholder.

    Matthew is the CEO and co-found of Lovelock London. He worked at Winton for 17 years, eight of which he served as Chief Investment Officer. As CIO, he had responsibility for overseeing all of the firm's investment activities, including for the flagship Winton Futures Fund.

    During his tenure, Winton grew to have $32 billion in assets making it one of the largest hedge funds in Europe. He also sat on the Board as a Director, and on the Executive Committee.

    Matthew previously graduated with a degree in Mathematics and Computer Science, and went on to earn a Master’s degree in Applied Statistics.

    Martin, who was born in Malaysia, was educated in Aberdeen and has an MA in Accountancy and an LLB. He divides his time between Aberdeen, where the business has always been headquartered, and London, as well as overseeing the international operations of the Group.

    About Patrick Armstrong

    Patrick is CIO and co-heads Plurimi Investment Managers. Previously Patrick spent 5 years as CIO at Armstrong Investment Managers, focusing on risk-controlled global macro multi-asset solutions and 6 years as co-head of Insight Investment’s $2 billion Multi-Asset Group. Prior to joining Insight Patrick worked at UBS as Head of Manager Selection for the $6 billion Managed Accounts Program.

    Patrick also worked at Deutsche Bank as an equity analyst, TD Securities as a derivatives analyst and began his career at Templeton management in Toronto. Patrick has an MBA from the Rotman School of Management – University of Toronto, and is a CFA Charterholder. He is the manager of two funds:  Diversified Dynamic Solution and Prosper Global Macro.

    Andrew Parry is Head of Sustainable Investing and a member of the Hermes Strategy Group. He joined the firm in 2009, initially as Chief Executive and Co-Head of Investment for Hermes Sourcecap, now Hermes European Equities, becoming Head of Equities in 2014 and taking on responsibility for developing Impact investing in August of 2016.

     In September of 2017 he became Head of Sustainable Investing to reflect the commitment of Hermes to building on their success in Responsible Investing. In 2006, Andrew jointly founded Sourcecap with the aim of building a best-in-class investment boutique focused on excellence in European equity management. Prior to this, Andrew established Pembroke Capital Management in 2003 and successfully launched the Magenta Fund, a global equity non-directional fund.

    Before that, Andrew worked at Northern Trust Global Investments (Europe) Ltd as Chief Investment Officer of International Equities and was responsible for the management of global, international and regional portfolios. He has also held a variety of senior investment roles, including Head of International Equities at Julius Baer Investments, Chief Investment Officer at Lazard Brothers Asset Management, and Head of UK Equities at Baring Asset Management.

    Andrew holds an MA in Mathematics from the University of St Andrews.

    She has a first class honours degree in estate management from South Bank University and is a member of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) and the Investment Property Forum.
