It's time for another entry in the Month of Horror, and BK & Jack are celebrating by digging into a movie monster that is near & dear to their hearts: The zombie! Join in as they discuss how we got from ancient cultural conceptions of the creature to its modern iteration, how different types of zombie evoke different types of fear, how Train to Busan advanced the genre in new & personal ways, & how the film would borrow from cultural flashpoints in modern Korean history to develop its message and symbolism. At 62, Doug Jones is as busy as ever, playing The Baron on FX's What We Do in the Shadows, Saru on Star Trek: Discovery, and returning to the role of Billy Butcherson in Hocus Pocus 2. But you might be most familiar with Doug for his singular roles in heavy prosthetics -- as Abe Sapien in Hellboy and Hellboy II, as The Amphibian Man in The Shape of Water; as Pan and the Pale Man in Pan's Labyrinth. Doug's physical presence -- once something he'd have wished away -- is a huge part of what has made his performances so rich and memorable.  And one early source of inspiration and identification was Ray Bulger's Scarecrow in The Wizard of Oz.

Godzilla has been a pop culture icon for the last 70 years...but what do we know about him really? This week, we get deep into the atomic lore of the original Godzilla series and explore his giant monster roots. Hope your hole is big enough. 

The crew play around with Guillermo del Toro's impressive 1993  debut feature film, "Cronos" and manage to survive all the bloody goodness they find there.

Dave shares his "Sobbing Saviour" cocktail, a slight variation on the "Weeping Jesus".
You should not be surprised that it is SWEET . . .

In an Old Fashioned glass  half-full of ice, combine:

1 oz. Peach Brandy
.5 oz. Pernod
.5 oz Cherry Liqueur
.5 oz. Rose's Grenadine
Splash or two of Ginger Ale
Garnish with cherry.

In October of 2020, to celebrate the First Anniversary of the Monster Movie Happy Hour, Scott and Dave spent a lovely evening chatting with our dear friends over at the Castle of Horror podcast. The subject - the original Universal "The Mummy", from 1932.

Mary couldn't join in the festivities this time around, but she found a perfect cocktail recipe, the "Rummy Mummy"!

2 oz. coconut flavored rum

.5oz. vanilla flavored vodka

.5oz. hazelnut flavored liqueur

4 oz. half and half

Combine ingredients in mixing glass

Pour over ice in Old-Fashioned glass.

Step back to the 1630's as our intrepid crew head into the Massachusetts wilderness and encounter Robert Egger's 2016 film,  "The Witch".
 
They are history folks, so it should come as no surprise that they love it - and (also no surprise) they love Mary's special cocktail, "The Witch of the Wood".

"The Witch of the Wood" cocktail

1 1/2 oz. Sweet Vermouth or Cocchi Americano Aperitif Wine
1 1/2 oz. Gin
1 1/2 oz. Sour Cherry Liqueur
Stir with ice
Strain into short glass and garnish with maraschino cherry - though a fancy-schmancy "dirty" cherry is even better!

The crew were guests on the Castle of Horror podcast and had a blast chatting about 1983's "House of the Long Shadows". We love those folks, and couldn't stop talking . . . 

The cocktail is from Vincent Price's 1965 A Treasury of Great Recipes. 

"Hanaho Rum Punch" 

1 1/4 ounces light rum
2 1/2 ounces pineapple juice
Juice of 1/2 lime
1/2 cup crushed ice
3/4 ounce dark rum
1 maraschino cherry
1 orange slice

1. Put into a cocktail shaker or electric blender the light rum, pineapple juice, lime juice and crushed ice.
2. Shake well, or if you are using a blender, cover and blend on high speed for about 10 seconds to mix thoroughly.
3. Pour into a zombie glass or hollowed pineapple shell. Top with dark rum and decorate with the cherry and orange slice on a pick.

The crew takes a LONG, strange trip through 1970's, "The Dunwich Horror", starring Sandra Dee and Dean Stockwell and a lot of psychedelic imagery.

Dave's cocktail offering is, essentially, a pretty gin and tonic with a hint of melon and orange. It's name was inspired by Lovecraft's description of the main character, Wilbur Whateley. Well . . . not the green part . . .  but certainly the goat part.

"The Green Goat" cocktail:

1 oz. Gin
1 to 2 oz. Midori
1/2 oz. Blue Curacao
Pour over ice in Collins Glass
4 oz. Tonic Water
Garnish with Orange Slice and Cherry
