50 Episodes! In this milestone episode, I was chatting with Dave Gates, Head of Vineyard Operations and VP at Ridge Vineyards in Northern California.
We discussed his interesting route into wine from his home farm in Central Minnesota, through agriculture in Southern California, to eventually Viticulture in UC Davis.
Dave is now in his 34th year in Ridge and his encyclopaedic knowledge of vineyards, soils, climates, fruits and the wines they are able to produce is simply awe inspiring.
I asked him about his favourite site (‘’like choosing children’’) and what excites him about Zinfandel in particular, as it is the grape most associated with Ridge (65% of production).
Of course, we mentioned the legendary Paul Draper, founder of Ridge, now in his mid-80’s, who is still involved in some key events in the winery’s calendar.
we also talked about the challenges of water shortages, the old, engrafted zinfandel vines, his experience as a wine blender and as tradition of the podcast dictates, his Desert Island wines of choice. Enjoy!

Chris Medina is the Owner and Hearing Aid Specialist at Virtue Hearing Aid Center. As a second-generation hearing aid specialist, he’s been working in the hearing aid world since he was 18, when his uncle invited him to apprentice at the family practice. Chris loved that he could combine his interest in technology with a desire to help people. Chris has seen what a difference hearing aids have made in his own family, and he’s eager to give other families that same experience.

An audiogram is a graph of information of someone's hearing abilities.
When you see the graph, on the y-axis (left-hand side), you'll see your hearing levels in decibels. On the x-axis (right side) you'll see the frequencies in hertz.
When you get to a hearing aid dispensers office and take your hearing test you'll see a blue and red line. The red line represents your red line and the blue line represents your left ear.
In terms of the hearing levels:
0-20 is considered normal hearing
20-40 you have a mild hearing loss
40-70 you have a moderate hearing loss
70-90 is severe hearing loss
90 and above is considered a profound hearing loss.
Chis will also go over a sample of a few examples if hearing exams so you can get a better understanding.
