    Monique Wray

    Monique Wray

I had such a fantastic time speaking with artist, animator, and illustrator Monique Wray. Her bold, colorful, and lively art has been used by Google, Disney, Nickelodeon, Apple, and Microsoft (just to name a few places). We caught up recently to talk about her career and the evolution of her craft over the years.

Throughout our conversation, Monique offered insights into her creative process. She talked about the impact of a pivotal year of self-discovery, the importance of emphasizing humanity in digital art, and she shared her experiences with freelancing and maintaining a balance between professional work and personal projects.

Monique’s journey is such an inspiration for anyone interested in the confluence of art and tech. Thanks to Sam Bass for the introduction!

    Salih Abdul-Karim

    Salih Abdul-Karim

For our final episode of Revision Path for 2023, I talked with the amazingly brilliant Salih Abdul-Karim. If you’re a motion designer, then there’s a good chance you’ve used Lottie, which Salih co-created during his time at Airbnb and is the new industry standard when it comes to animation on mobile apps and the Web.

Salih talked about his current work at Cōlab, exploring their non-traditional approach which eschews agency hierarchies to maintain a hands-on, skill-diverse team that seamlessly fills in the gaps for startups and other companies. Salih also shared his personal journey of how he found his passion for combining tech and creativity, and we even gave our thoughts on Andre 3000’s debut solo album, New Black Sun.

Even with such a seasoned career, Salih’s humility and mindset of constant learning is truly inspiring. From all of us here at Revision Path, consider this episode our holiday gift to you! Merry Christmas!

    André Foster

    André Foster

If you’ve been listening to the podcast over the past year or two, you know that the use of AI has been a constant thread through nearly every episode. And this week’s guest, André Foster, has embraced this new tech as part of his creative practice while still producing top notch motion design and animation work through his studio, First Fight.

André gave a rundown on some of the client work and the day-to-day happenings at First Fight, and discussed the importance of perseverance and continuous improvement through difficult social and economic times. The conversation then dives into the use of AI in the creative industry, and from there André talk about his upbringing in Detroit, the city’s creative community, and Bond — James Bond.

For André, resilience, adaptability, and personal growth have been the keys to his success!

    Alex Gennette

    Alex Gennette

In this episode I chat with Lead Product Designer, Alex Gennette, at Netflix Games. We not only discuss his role in designing for the Netflix Games platform, but we also talk about board games and those tiny figurines that come with many multi-player adventure games. We nerd-out about non-linear content and a project in Alex’s portfolio that required him to design a system for livestream motion graphics. Alex also shares insights about being humble when designing for users. Of course we touch on his time at Ringling College of Art & Design, where he learned to write code for Flash animations just as Apple announced they would not support it on the iPhone and spending time at the beach, but only during the evening because he was too busy working on class assignments during the day. Game on people!

How to Win in the Gaming Industry - League of Legends Former Director - Anthony Possobon

    Anthony Possobon

“My advice to anyone that’s trying to get into the video game company is to look at the roles that they put upon on the website, find which of those roles you are interested in, and then build your portfolio, make artwork that represents the role.”- Anthony Possobon

I am so excited to introduce to you this episode of the Vivid Vision podcast. Anthony Possobon aka Mr. Pasta Bomb, who worked previously as the Creative Director for League of Legends with Riot Games joins me today! Anthony specializes in animation, motion graphics, and storytelling. To anyone wanting to get into the video gaming industry, Anthony could be just the right person to hear from!

It was during his high school days that he found his fun place was video games. He got his first job as a temp in Riot games and has done a great bit in improving their games and videos.

Anthony says that to get into a gaming company, you probably only need a good portfolio of work. It doesn’t matter if you did not go into college. But if you wish to get into the legal team, you may need a degree. That is a totally different story. He advises on using the available tools to your advantage and creating your portfolio. While applying for a job, make sure to tweak your portfolio and samples to cater to the job requirements. Having a broad scope of interests is good, but being more specific is key.

To get more insights from this creative director-cum-digital influencer, tune in to the episode today!

Building An After Effects for Dummies | Ep. 20 with Michael Aubry

Building An After Effects for Dummies | Ep. 20 with Michael Aubry

On this episode of the Candid Creative podcast, Antonio talks with Michael Aubry, creator and founder of Story Creator, an “After Effects for Dummies.” Michael talks about how he came up with the idea and shares how all of his previous experiences have led him to where he is today.

Michael started hacking on things when he was 17-18. Bored with pirating video games in his youth, Michael started pirating $500 Adobe editing software that gave him a technical edge over his peers. He used his access to this software to learn how to code and make money online. Kicked out of his mother’s house and living in his friend’s basement, he started work at Verizon.

Eventually making his way to the incubator at Hacker Dojo in Mountain View, CA, Michael networked and met the people he needed to grow his vision. He met the founder of XY Gaming and started hanging out with people who understood the art of building businesses. Michael was 23 when he moved to San Francisco, and in that time, he worked at three startups and gained the experience he needed to build his own platform. He would not trade in that time for anything.

Discussing the conception of the Story Creator idea, Michael thought that this was the coolest tool (with the biggest market gap) available. After talking to people about the project and listening to their problems, he started to get customers. April is really when things started to kick off. Juggling all of the sides of the business has been Michael’s most difficult challenge.

At the end of the day, you need to make a decision and execute it. It’s okay if it doesn’t work, Michael says. When talking about feedback, you want higher-level, not specific. You really just need to be able to face the truth, which is going to get the results you want in your life. If you can put in the due diligence, it will play out well for you to not take feedback personally. It’s just something you have to work on.

He thinks the best thing you can do is follow-through. Decide what you’re going to do and do it. If you really want to do it as a career, you need to determine why you’re doing this in the first place. Establish it early on and be committed.

This episode of Feasting on Design is supported by the new season of Wireframe – a podcast all about how UX can help technology fit into our lives. Hosted by Khoi Vinh, Senior Director of Design at Adobe, Wireframe is a show for designers and the design-curious. This Season of Wireframe leans into how design intersects with the changing world around us.

There are stories about how user experience design helps people manage stress and sleeplessness; find something good to watch on an online streaming service; help individuals, creators and social causes through crowdfunding. It explores how design helps older family members understand technology, and the podcast also chats with designers trying to make voting easier. Turns out, it’s really hard.

You’ll hear from designers and design leaders who have built UX and UI experiences for companies like Headspace, Patreon, Kickstarter, Withings, and other companies that are putting design at the forefront of their companies’ experiences.

Whether you’re into UX, UI, technology… or just curious about the way design impacts our everyday lives, I hope you’ll check out the show.

Just search “Wireframe” in your favorite podcast app (like the one you’re using right now). I’ll also include a link in the show notes. My thanks to Wireframe for supporting Feasting on Design.

How to Focus & Build Your Video Brand with Lex Johnson

Lex Johnson is an animator, director and founder of design and animation company Dazzle Ship. His career has grown from a passion to create and innovate.

At 18 he created his first animated TV series for European music channel 'Channel U’. He went on to work in computer game animation, he’s created short films and music videos that have been shown at international festivals and he likes to teach – lecturing at renowned Swedish motion design school Hyper Island as well as several London universities.

In 2017 he took a step back and worked remotely around the world for a year. His company Dazzle Ship has gone from strength to strength developing a strong identity and client base, working with charities, brands and events – always connecting motion graphics with a brand story.
