The Good In Going The Wrong Way

If you’re in to driving for fun and adventure, restoring cars, racing, or anything car or driving related this is the Podcast for you…The Driving Experience.  This is your host Kevin Pennell.

In this episode, we’re talking motorcycles and more specifically, a particular motorcycle, its driver, and their stories that nearly spans the globe and 42 years.  We’re going to be hearing from Chris Donaldson, the driver of that motorcycle and author of his best selling book Going the Wrong Way, A ‘coming of age’ road trip like no other.  Chris began his journey in the 70’s with a Moto Guzi sport bike beginning from Belfast, Northern Ireland with his sights set on, wait for it, Australia!  He made a wrong turn and well… What’s it like to try such a trek?  Why do it?  Join me now as I talk with Chris Donaldson about What’s Good About Going The Wrong Way.

    Some thoughts from Chris Donaldson

Since the Stone Age, the Walkabout has been an Aboriginal rite of passage. When adolescent boys wander aimlessly through the bush on a journey with no particular destination, to make the spiritual transition from boy to man. It’s a time for self-assessment and deep thought, to learn about himself without the influence of his elders, friends, or family. It’s a physical and psychological journey. Chris didn’t look like an Aboriginal adolescent as he set off from Belfast on his café racing Moto Guzzi. But it was the same determination that drove him to set off on a journey of self-discovery. This desire drove him to break free from the mediocre, middle-class existence and reach out for the unknown. The demand was irresistible and bound him to the ancient ritual that many young men before me had taken. But when the Iranian revolution stopped the planned 4-month, 10,000 mile bike trip to Australia, he ends high in the Andes, 50-odd thousand miles later, before returning to Belfast. Extra-ordinary is a genuine understatement for the journey, especially, when seen through the eyes of a lad brought up in the 70s Belfast Troubles where this venture began. Belfast was closed in on itself, with gates, checkpoints, fences, fears and suspicions holding many people trapped. A sobering realisation among the ensuing adventures is that across continents there was no escape from meetings with checkpoints, guns and fearful divisions. However, the outstanding thing the author lets us share in, is the network of positive humanity around the world, enabling challenges to be met and overcome or circumvented. And somehow there is always petrol (and golden syrup) to be found, to fuel the next step forwards. An amazing adventure before google maps, mobile phones and social media. At times breathtaking when going through some hairy situations along with the best of Belfast humour. Unlike those today caught up taking photos of every moment and shared on social media.

114 – Getting the ‘F’ out your comfort zone, and Live in the Now!

On this episode, I get to chat with a physician who’s splitting his time between expeditions in Antarctica and on the motorcycle race track. My next guest, Dr. Nicholas Steinour, is an Emergency Medicine physician currently practicing in Austin, Texas.

Dr. Steinour’s mantra is “enjoy things that make you fully present in life,” and without a doubt, he is living a life outside the box. You’re going to hear about how he’s become part of a team of physicians that provide medical support to expeditions in the South Pole. We’re talking about caring for seal bites, sea sickness, and of course hypothermia. He’s also combined his childhood passion for motorcycles with medicine and provides medical care to various racing circuits that are in Texas.

You are in for a real treat today. This is a long conversation with a woman whom you’ve likely never heard of before but I can guarantee you will want to meet and hang out with her after you listen to this episode.

I’m not sure if it’s her accent, which is beyond charming, or it’s her self-deprecating way or it’s her keen observations about herself and others. It’s probably a combination of all of those. But whatever it is, you’re going to be pulled into a conversation that is just gonna make you feel good and, hopefully, it’s gonna make you think differently about what’s possible for yourself.

So, this conversation is with Sue Hollis. Sue is an Australian but she currently splits her time between the land down under and Canada. It was my very good fortune that she happened to be in Canada this summer and was willing to take a ride down here to Seattle on her beloved motorcycle, Voodoo, as she calls it, to record.

Anyway, Sue just released a book called Riding Raw: The Journey from Empty to Full which chronicles her three-month ride through North America (mostly in the western US and parts of Canada) on her 1000 CC BMW superbike. As a rider myself, I can attest to the fact that 1000 cc’s is a big bike, especially for a petite woman like Sue.

But she took on this big trip after feeling like her “perfect” world wasn’t so perfect and she needed a drastic change to reclaim her life and find, what she calls, heart success.

She really has a wonderful story to tell about her rise in the corporate travel world and how she always felt that she was going to be found out as a fraud at what she was doing (and that came with a lot of stress and fear). She went on to build a multi-million dollar business but still felt empty (hence the sub-title of the book, from empty to full).

As you can imagine, she’s got some great stories to tell, not only about her past life in her career but also about her journey on Voodoo. And there are great lessons in here for all of us, not just for unhappy corporate execs or motorcycle riders. Some of the lessons she shares are really accessible to us all. And that’s probably what makes this conversation so much fun and interesting.

So with that, here’s my conversation with Sue Hollis.
