Holistic Health with Dr. Latania Booker, MD

In this week's episode, I sit with Dr. Latania Booker.

In this episode you will learn how movement, nutrients, lifestyle & other habits impact our health & fatloss.

Latania Booker, MD, a Texas, is a board certified Internal Medicine doctor. She has been practicing medicine since earning her Doctorate of Medicine from the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston in 2009. She completed her internship and residency training in Internal Medicine at the Houston Methodist Hospital in the world renowned Texas Medical Center.

Dr. Booker is a marathoner who is passionate about fitness and nutrition. After learning how to improve her own personal health and athletic performance, she decided that she wanted to make a change in the way she approached caring for her patients and switched her focus from treating chronic disease using prescriptions to disease prevention using movement and nutrition. She believes that she can use simple lifestyle modifications to help patients manage common diseases such as osteoarthritis, type 2 diabetes, obesity, heart disease and other chronic inflammatory illnesses. Her objective is to help patients learn to eat a nutritious diet that supports health at the cellular level and provide movement solutions so that patients can be more active and have more vitality.

Connecting to our Health and Purpose - Troy Casey - Episode 64

Connecting to our Health and Purpose - Troy Casey - Episode 64

Welcome to the weMove Podcast. Last week we spoke with Jill Miller about the importance of creating a safe space for the body to release and let go of the tension it holds unnecessarily.

This week we follow that up with Troy Casey aka @certifiedhealthnut who we ice bathed, and sat with in the glorious Californian sun to hear his route from hedonistic model to a being focussed on the true essence of being a healthy self, and that is to heal thy self.

Troy is a CHEK practitioner, fitness and lifestyle coach who looks the result of the protocols and practices he teaches.

Both Chris and I were unsure of what to expect when we turned up in Venice, based on his instagram account. Well looks can be deceiving and what followed was such a clear story of his progression from the party hard model to the conduit to support others on their journey to good health.

We talk health and healing protocols, plant medicines from simple herbs to the powerful and sacred Ayahuasca and equally importantly the spaces that he and his network create for both men and women to feel safe to connect with their Yin and Yang sides and release the trauma that we carry unknowingly through our lives. Chris and I are big advocates for this type of work in a personal and safe group setting because from our personal experiences so much that happens to us is a result of learned behaviours, modelled to us as we grow up, which then become distorted to the point that we are held back by our own ideas of what we saw.

If you do feel a yearning or a desire to find a group of likeminds then follow it. The positive change that comes from making those steps can seem daunting at first but they can set the tone from the day you decide onwards. Hugely worth it.

Do Less With the Body to get More out - Jill Miller - Episode 63

Do Less With the Body to get More out - Jill Miller - Episode 63

Welcome to this weeks weMove podcast.

Is something in your body hurting or not clicking right, are you ready to unwind your old assumptions about your body and movement to move forward. This episode might be just what you re looking for.

On reflection into how I have tended to do things, I have, up until the last few years been very singular in my activities, life was all about climbing, then about developing a business, that led to running and on and on this went until I felt like I got to the end of the tracks for that way of being.

I had no idea what the cost was of the movement/activities I was doing because that was all I was doing. In every instance it led to imbalances and an inevitable break down of the vehicle I was travelling in. My body.

And lo and behold this episode is about ways and strategies to regain balance, resilience and connection to what can be done.

We are speaking with Jill Miller co-founder of Tune Up Fitness Worldwide and creator of the self-care fitness formats Yoga Tune Up® and The Roll Model® Method.

With more than 30 years of study in anatomy and movement, she is a pioneer in forging relevant links between the worlds of fitness, yoga, massage, athletics and pain management. She is known as the Teacher’s Teacher and has trained thousands of movement educators, clinicians, and manual therapists to incorporate her paradigm shifting self-care fitness programming into athletic and medical facility programs internationally.

As the creator of some of the world's best mobility tools, she has crafted original programs for 24 Hour Fitness, Equinox, YogaWorks, and numerous professional sports teams. She and her team of 500+ trainers help you to live better in your body with an emphasis on proprioception, mobility, breath mechanics and recovery.

This connects well with our Gary Ward episode and also the Rewire Project episode combining new ways of thinking to the worlds of fitness, health and wellbeing.

Explore the edges, the opposites and all the grey areas in between. Crossfitters, be uncomfortable in meditation, explore the stillness. Yogi’s? Be under load, lift weights, feel the resistance, feel the opposing forces and experience fully what you and your body can do.

    Enjoy.

Remove Control and Jump into the Chaos - PJ Nestler - Episode 62

Remove Control and Jump into the Chaos - PJ Nestler - Episode 62

How much in your life do you do that just sucks or you go out of your way to avoid? For the most part we live in or very close to, states of underlying fear, overwhelm and anxiety and they affect our ability to live in our potential and take ourselves to another level. It isn’t the removal of the situations which cause these states that is the key but rather developing the ability to stay calm within ourselves and adapt to the situation which presents itself and move through it with the minimum amount of friction.

And we can do this with the right training, the right people around us and as our mentor Tony Molina says, when we have got to the point where we know that change is required and we no longer want to go on living the way we are.

And it is under that premise that we release this weeks conversation with performance director for the performance and longevity protocol XPT, Coach PJ Nestler.

We have watched XPT develop for a few years now and with two of our good friends @kimmy.moss and @richienorton_ XPT instructors we were delighted to sit with PJ and talk through what the XPT system is, what it can do for individuals and how we have the ability to continuously adapt ourselves to overcome our perceived limits and remain calm in the face of a storm.

On the physical surface level we love XPT for its combination of underwater pool training, sauna and ice bath practices and the full range of breathing practices and more, which in and of themselves are great fun to test yourself surrounded by other like minds. But what holds the eternal appeal for us with XPT is the way PJ and the founders Laird Hamilton and Gabby Reece think about life, performance and potential.

It connects and resonates with our own views on life, performance and potential and gives another flavour and blend of how physical movement, ice, sauna, breathwork can combine to unlock the potential we all have within us, and the key to unlocking many of the doors is to learn and practice the skills which diffuse the emotions that arise when we face the things which we are so accustomed to running away from.

Ice isn't about the cold, it's about who you become - Kimmy Moss - Episode 61

Ice isn't about the cold, it's about who you become - Kimmy Moss - Episode 61

This weeks podcast is with Kimmy Moss who is one of the team at Deuce Gym, founder of Breath & Exposure and a kindred spirit for her love of the ice bath and what it does for anyone who steps in and goes inside.

We met Kimmy like many of our LA friends through Carl Paoli when he hosted his new seminar the Freestyle Insider in London back in early 2019. Shared ideas and a connection over soccer, for Chris and Kimmy at least led us to want to sit down with Kimmy when we were back in LA and hit record.

We talk about her transition from the soccer field to the position of coach and how this has created within her a definite ability to support her athletes to realise something more within themselves, the hidden potential that lies deep beneath the layers of our conditioning and what we think we can do.

That idea is something Chris and I believe greatly in and that is also the challenge that we all face to realise the potential inside, the challenge being peeling back those layers that we add over time. And this is where the ice comes in for Kimmy who dabbled with the sports ice bath during her soccer years and then evolved into her coming under the wing of Laird Hamilton and Gabbi Reece with the XPT Fitness protocol which places a great emphasis on longevity and adaptation.

Kimmy has now evolved her own method and playbook for how breath work and exposure (both hot and cold) can create strides in our ability to adapt and respond to increasing stress be it performance or life.

Love her style, its crisp and clear and holds the athlete in their highest with a hint of eye contact when they feel like backing off from what they can achieve.

Who would have thought getting in ice baths would have such a profound effect on the psyche and physiology. It’s something that is for anyone but might not be for everyone. It takes curiosity to seek whats on the other side of discomfort. If you are curious give it a go, find the groups who do it and share in the experience for yourself.

Make the Information your own. Make it your art. - Caro Burckle - Episode 60

Make the Information your own. Make it your art. - Caro Burckle - Episode 60

Hey There, and welcome to this weeks episode on the weMove podcast. This is the third podcast from our recent trip to the US.

Back in Issue 1 we hung out with Carl Paoli, the former gymnast, turned movement specialist. He said often that we should move by feel, and that whilst there are principles of movement, these are often lost in the desire to follow the method verbatim, with little appreciation for the principles which the method is based upon.

Inevitably this leads to a robotic like pursuit of something that is unknown, a hollow approach to experiencing something so physical.

And that is where we are exploring today with former Olympic swimming medalist, Caro Burckle.

For an Olympian athlete under the spotlight, she experienced the intensity required to meet the requirements of others. The requirement to win, and with it the mechanistic approach that performance is given, forgetting the importance of feel and focussing on splits, times, weight and distance.

Caro’s performance lay in her intuitive approach to her craft. Her love of water was instant and in the streaming for performance, she experienced a disconnect between her craft and her feel, her love for the very thing that made her come alive.

During the podcast we talk about the importance of finding our own meaning in the information and methods given to us, the importance of following our Self and creating something uniquely our own on the road to potential.

And we touch on where she has come since retiring from the pinnacle of her sport and that is @riseathetes, the mentorship program for young aspiring athletes by those who have walked the path and are now giving back to the next generation whilst realising their purpose after sport.

We need mentors and guides who can listen, reframe and share their experiences to know we are not alone in what we go through. From professional sport to our chosen career or even being a parent, the benefits of mentors and the connection that comes with them, is worth its weight in gold.

Enjoy the episode, as always there is some great material in there and do share it to anyone you think might be interested or is going through something that connects with the theme of today.

The Mirror of Confrontation - Cara Miller & Logan Gelbrich - Episode 59

The Mirror of Confrontation - Cara Miller & Logan Gelbrich - Episode 59

Hey there and welcome to this weeks weMove podcast and this is the second podcast from our 2019 US trip. For those new to listening our intention with the podcast and the publications is to inspire and nurture through movement but more often than not we realise that movement is just a tool to strip away the layers of our identity in order to get to our true potential.

This episode started off in the movement space with our friendship with one of the guests that has led on to a deeper understanding of what he is building in the physical culture space with his growing number of gyms, strengthening culture and thriving community, and more importantly the principles behind it. Because the principles enable us to go beyond what we thought was possible, and going beyond rarely goes in the way we have been told to expect it and what we talk about in this episode is no different.

In San Diego we sat down on the comfy seats of Cara Millers office with Logan Gelbrich to talk why constructive criticism won’t move the needle and seeking the parts of us that lets us down and working on them will, shining a light on our weaknesses and those of others in our team in an open and supportive culture to accelerate us towards our goals.

Logan Gelbrich is founder of Deuce Gym and Cara Miller, developmental coach, organisational consultant and leadership designer has worked with Logan since Deuce was an idea creating a culture which is way more than a gym, it is a community and culture sitting smack bang in the middle of performance, community lifestyle intersection.

This is about how there is so much more growth to be gained by closing the gap on something you are not good at rather than how much growth you can gain by incremental gains on something you are already good at.

It pays to focus on the thing that gives you consistent growth and development. The caveat being Honesty, radical transparency and commitment are non negotiable.

There are layers in this and a myriad of connections to other episodes, most notably the Jami Tikkanen episode.

Enjoy, share, spread the word and thanks for listening.

Do The Things You Don't Want To Do - Mark Twight & Michael Blevins - Episode 58

Do The Things You Don't Want To Do - Mark Twight & Michael Blevins - Episode 58

This episode is taken from our most recent trip to the US. Every time we go away it’s a new trip with new insights and new perspectives. Increasing our awareness of the connections between the methods and ideas of the creators. Relentless in their pursuit of the creative endeavor. Their art form if you will.

This was the midway point of our road trip having come from Colorado, through New Mexico and then across the mid West to Salt Lake City Utah to meet Mark Twight and Michael Blevins.

For some these names will mean nothing, for others who were climbing in the 90’s Marks name will ring a bell and for others who are fully in the deep end of physical culture Mark created Gym Jones. An idea and philosophy of training, constantly asking questions and testing ideas formed from the depths of pushing and suffering in the mountains.

Mark met Michael through Gym Jones and these two went forward creating something purer, deeper and richer in the world of physical culture with Nonprophet, an evolving stable of mediums, from publishing and photography (Raze & Refuge),  the Dissect podcast the Fitness is Fucked symposium and where we met, the physical space in Salt Lake City. Combined and individually the mediums have the power to influence and change those who connect and are prepared to do ‘the work’.

Since we first saw the zine they produced under the title Raze “a fistfight with nature” at Barbers Gym we have wanted to sort this trip out, we are listeners of their Dissect podcast and it’s the perspective and opinions they take, looking through different lenses to most that piques our interest. They are defiantly individual yet share much common ground with the other vanguards we are meeting. So we arrived in Salt Lake City and sat with them in their studio and talked.

We talked about the common ground we share, of creating manifestations of ideas we have had and the importance of continuously evolving our Selves and the mediums with which we put ideas out in to the world. The latter often being a point of contention for those who are comfortable in staying put and not evolving. This is highly principled non dogmatic dogma.

We change over time and with the right environment we grow and that is the richness of creating and putting ideas out in to the world supported by an environment, which holds us accountable to do the things we need to do but so often put off because they feel uncomfortable.

As Michael said: “We need someone to push us in the direction we are not willing to go in order to create the change we say we want.”

Change, adaptation, transformation. All create discomfort, all can foster suffering but through the other side we are more than the person we were when we went in.

Change the way you look at pain - Perry Nickelston - Episode 57

Change the way you look at pain - Perry Nickelston - Episode 57

Hey there and welcome to the weMove podcast.

Have you had a time in your life when you are managing pain, through a new or old injury or some other kind of pain that just appeared and it has just lingered? Chances are you have had one of those and this weeks episode is absolutely worth a listen.

This week we are speaking with Perry Nickelston aka @stopchasingpain. We have been following Perry for a while now and he comes up in conversation when I’m training at my local box.

The work Perry is putting out is incredible, he is a chiropractic physician who specialises in supporting people to get out of pain. Not pain free as he says during the podcast but able to manage and move through pain.

I’ve struggled with a dodgy knee for a couple of years now, since dislocating it and it has been a constant niggle in my performance. But since following Perry and delving deeper into why the pain is there and where it actually begins has been a fascinating journey.

Like many other of the minds we speak to, he references the importance to move, to lift, to hydrate but this time through a filter of the Lymph system. Our bodies natural waste removal system which stagnates when we become sedentary and can back up, much like a sewage system in our cities.

Like each conversation we have on the show, there is a rich mine of information and concepts and this is for anyone who trains, wants to live feeling better or has pain somewhere in their body that they are trying to manage.

And the take away for me is that although you might feel pain in a part of your body. The source is likely to be nothing to do with the pain you are feeling, but are you willing to go looking for the true source?

Been wanting to have this conversation for a while now and so delighted to have recorded this and now putting it out.

Achieving the Long Goal - Jami Tikkanen - Episode 56

Achieving the Long Goal - Jami Tikkanen - Episode 56

Are you prepared to do what is necessary in order to become the best version of yourself?

This question jumped out at me as I was listening to todays episode of the weMove podcast with Jami Tikkanen, performance coach to the elite CrossFit athletes Annie Thorisdottir and BK Gudmundsen.

We have been waiting for over 12 months to sit down with Jami after first meeting him for Issue 1 of our publication back in 2015. Since then he has been perpetually on the road, refining the training of his athletes to compete at the highest level in the world of CrossFit and it is clearly working.

OF course we aren’t all going to be elite level performers, that as we hear is a perfect blend of factors, but we can effect our performance and potential as our selves and Jami outlines ideas as to how we can. And these are the very same as he applies and develops in the athletes he trains to become their own potent best.

We cover some ground, from the positive effects of Trust and belief, to the mental skill of performance on demand and how we can achieve our human potential by consistently i.e. daily challenging ourselves with things that we haven’t done before be they physical, mental, fitness goals or career goals. Surrounding our selves with others who believe in your ability and will support you to gain the experiences, which are needed to help you on the path.

This was one of those episodes that I had forgotten about and after the first listen, it went on repeat twice and then I got a fourth listen before the family woke up because there is so much in there to be had.

For anyone who believes they have more or are looking for those ways in which they can step up to the next level this is a must. Improving is a long goal built on small steps and as Jami reiterated a consistently strong foundation of the basics.

After my 5th listen in two days I am already gearing up for my next early morning playback. Enjoy and as always, let us know what you think of the episode.
