Podcast: Gun found in Milton Creek near Sittingbourne by teenager during mudlarking trip

A teenager has found a gun while mudlarking near Sittingbourne.

Adam Gates regularly searches for finds in Milton Creek but had to call in the emergency services when he made his most recent discovery.

Also in today's podcast, tributes have been paid to a 15-year-old boy who died when his e-scooter collided with a BMW in Coxheath.

The teenager's been named as Kieran Byrne who went to Cornwalls Academy and died on Saturday night in what's been called an "avoidable tragedy". Hear from MP Craig Mackinlay.

MPs have heard the Home Office is paying for thousands of empty hotel beds reserved for asylum seekers, to avoid overcrowding at processing centres like Manston in Thanet.

Officials told the Public Accounts Committee the department keeps a "buffer" of about 5,000 beds across the UK in case of a sudden influx of Channel crossings.

Volunteers at a Kent food bank have been given body-worn cameras because of the abuse they're suffering.

Gillingham Street Angels feeds 18,000 people a month. Boss Neil Charlick has told the podcast why they have had to take action to protect staff.

It's feared rubbish will continue to pile up in part of Kent after refuse workers rejected the latest pay offer.

Members of the GMB union who collect waste in and around Canterbury are staging indefinite industrial action. Hear from one of the workers who has been on the picket line.

The Red Arrows are going to be performing a 30 minute acrobatic display off the Kent coast next month.

The Battle of Britain Memorial Flight will feature wartime planes including a Hurricane and Spitfire.

Have you noticed people on the foreshore of the River Thames with their heads down searching for something? Have you ever wondered what they could possibly find? In this episode we address what this activity is - it is none other than mudlarking! And we have none other than River Thames mudlarking enthusiast Lara Maiklem telling us about all things mudlarking.

Lara is a British author, editor and publishing consultant known for her writing and speaking on mudlarking, she is also a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries. One of her books, 'Mudlarking Lost and Found In The River Thames' was awarded Sunday Times Bestseller, an Observer Book Of The Year, Radio 4 Book Of The Week and Winner of the 2020 Indie Book Award for Non-Fiction.

Join us as we dig and delve into the world of mudlarking and Lara's personal anecdotes on how she fell in love it!

Correction at 26:00: There is no known colony of seahorses near the Greenwich Peninsula. It is most likely, however, that seahorses live in the part of the Thames Estuary where there are flooded areas of saltmarsh and seagrass meadows. The one’s seen in the river or on the foreshore in the city are those that get washed upstream with the incoming tide.

Lynn Pew, Alice and the Mudlark, River Irwell

Lynn Pew, Alice and the Mudlark, River Irwell

In this episode, the second in our Mudlark series, Anne Marie talks to Mudlark Lynn Pew. Lynn mudlarks along the River Irwell in Lancashire, England, where she scours its banks for beautiful pieces of broken pottery, little pieces of history tumbled by the river for over 100 years. Lynn tells us about the river's history and where many of the pieces she finds originated.

Lynn is fascinated with how these tiny fragments made their way into the river and the journey they have been on. Cracked and faded, their edges are worn smooth from their watery passage, a mere remnant of what once was. Who last held them in their former, utilitarian life before she plucked them from the banks of the river.

Years after she began collecting these lovely miniature pieces of history, she incorporated them into handcrafted one-of-a-kind mosaic works of art, which she entered and won a place in Country Living Magazine's 'Kitchen Table Talent' competition.

Willy Mason (Musician) / Miles Taverner (Artist)

Well hello! This week I chat to singer-songwriter Willy Mason (and producer Noel Heroux) about his excellent new album “Already Dead”, his first album for 9 years.

My other guest is artist Miles Taverner, who makes stunning works of art from wood and other materials the tide happens to bring in. He has an exhibition in London in September 2021 as part of the Totally Thames Festival.
