The Donut Shop Killers: A Family Gone Wrong

The Donut Shop Killers: A Family Gone Wrong

We've told you all about the Donut Shop Killers. How Sherman McCrary and his son-in-law Carl Taylor traveled the countries with their families in tow, robbing, raping, and killing as they went.

In this episode, we're switching things up. Instead of focusing on the what, we'll talk about the why. We'll be diving into the psychological factors that could spur a family to go on a murderous rampage.

Please check out Wondery’s "Families Who Kill: The Donut Shop Murders" wherever you listen to podcasts. And if you enjoy the show, leave a five-star review (and feel free to shout out the Murder Sheet).

In the Shadow of Nadia: The Lawyer

In the Shadow of Nadia: The Lawyer

Chicago police announced that they believed 19-year-old Maurice Harris was the culprit behind the 2017 massacre at Nadia's Fish & Chicken. To outsiders, it might have seemed like authorities had an ironclad case against the young man. But Ian Barney — the attorney who represented Harris in his police brutality suit — wasn't so sure.

In this episode of "In the Shadow of Nadia," we'll introduce you more to Barney, who began investigating the Nadia's case with the intent of proving his client innocent. We'll discuss Barney's legal background and strategies, and what he learned about the killings at Nadia's.

In the Shadow of Nadia: The Discovery

In the Shadow of Nadia: The Discovery

After the Chicago Police Department arrested 19-year-old Maurice Harris for the Nadia's Fish & Chicken murders, prosecutors went about trying to make a case against the teenager.

Attorney Ian Barney had initially signed on to represent Maurice Harris in his brutality suit against the cops. Now, the lawyer found himself working to defend his client from murder charges. Barney was convinced of Harris' innocence — which is not as common a phenomenon in the world of defense attorneys as you might hope. But proving that Harris wasn't a killer would be easier said than done.

Join the Murder Sheet's Áine Cain and Kevin Greenlee in the third episode of "In the Shadow of Nadia," a new miniseries investigating the Nadia's Fish & Chicken murders. This episode will feature insights from Barney about the discovery process of the case.

In the Shadow of Nadia: The Corner Store

In the Shadow of Nadia: The Corner Store

When the Chicago Police Department announced that they'd arrested Maurice Harris for the March 30, 2017 quadruple homicide at Nadia's Fish & Chicken Grill, they made sure to talk at length about the 19-year-old's juvenile record.

But they still failed to disclose a few key details. Namely, that their prime suspect was still in the process of suing their department for brutality. Five years earlier, two Chicago police officers had grabbed Harris off the street. They asked him where they could buy drugs, then punched him in the face. Then, things got even worse.

Join the Murder Sheet's Áine Cain and Kevin Greenlee in the second episode of "In the Shadow of Nadia," a new miniseries investigating the Nadia's Fish & Chicken murders. This episode will get into Maurice Harris' brutality suit against the Chicago Police Department, the lack of consequences for violent police officers, and we'll also introduce you to Harris' attorney Ian Barney.

In the Shadow of Nadia: The Murders

In the Shadow of Nadia: The Murders

On a spring day four years ago, a gunman burst into a restaurant in Chicago's South Shore neighborhood. He opened fire, killing two young men in the eatery, and a pair of brothers attempting to flee the scene.

Many questions remain about the murders that occurred on March 30, 2017 in Nadia's Fish & Chicken Grill. The sudden massacre happened in the midst of a spate of killings in the South Shore. Police quickly identified a local suspect: 19-year-old Maurice Harris. He had just lost his father to gun violence, and police hosted a press conference declaring that their suspect was likely out for vengeance.

But the case was far from over. As it turns out, the Chicago Police Department failed to disclose some key details about Harris, details that would have major implications for the case.

Join the Murder Sheet's Áine Cain and Kevin Greenlee in the first episode of "In the Shadow of Nadia," a new miniseries investigating the Nadia's Fish & Chicken murders. This episode will delve into the events of March 2017, offering a detailed timeline on the shooting at Nadia and a series of potentially-connected crimes.

High's Ice Cream Homicides: Covering the Case with Small Town Big Crime's Courteney Stuart

High's Ice Cream Homicides: Covering the Case with Small Town Big Crime's Courteney Stuart

In 1967, two young women working at High's Ice Cream in Staunton, Virginia were shot to death at work. Decades later, one of their coworkers, Sharron Smith, confessed on her deathbed to the killings.

But that wasn't the end of the story. For some, it was just the beginning. William "Bill" Thomas, a man who had been acquitted of one of the murders, brought a lawsuit against Staunton itself, after living under a cloud of suspicion for years.

Courteney Stuart had previously edited stories about the High's confession for The Hook, a local Charlottesville paper. Then, she found herself reporting on the Thomas lawsuit. She spoke with us about what it was like on the ground, covering the aftermath of an explosive small-town case.

And check out Courteney's own true crime podcast — Small Town Big Crime — wherever you listen to podcasts. It delves into the shocking 1985 murders of Derek and Nancy Haysom, and the subsequent arrest of their daughter Elizabeth and her University of Virginia classmate Jens Soering.

In the upcoming weeks, the Murder Sheet will roll out a miniseries on an unsolved restaurant mass murder, so stay tuned.

    The Donut Shop Killers

    The Donut Shop Killers

On early autumn night in 1971, two creepy men visited Winchell's Donut Shop in Salt Lake City. Sherman McCrary and Carl Taylor sipped on coffee, and directed profane remarks at other customers. Then, when the shop had cleared out, they kidnapped Sheri Martin, the young clerk on duty.

It was the beginning of a multi-state robbery and rape and murder spree for the men and their families. At times, McCrary and Taylor even brazenly committed their sexual crimes on women as their own wives sat by, quietly watching.

Law enforcement figured out relatively quickly that the binge of violence and sexual sadism was the work of one group of perpetrators.  But how many innocents would suffer and die before detectives identified the killers?
