Episode 221: Brando Rich (Cash or Trade)

Fans need tickets and artists need fans. On this week’s episode, I talk to Brando Rich, co-founder and CEO of Cash or Trade, the popular ticket exchange app. Brando’s mission is to get tickets that might go unused into the hands of fans that need them -- at face value or less. As the de-facto head of the Face Value Movement, Brando talks to me about the intricacies of ticketing, how best to thwart scalpers, and how the live music experience is the vital essence that drives Cash or Trade’s continued growth and expansion. Brando wants fans to enjoy the amazing experience of live music, and he learned early on from the Phish and jam band world that by using his programming expertise, he could unite fans with face value tickets in a community of like minded music lovers. Idealistic?  Yes!  Feasible and doable?  Yes and yes!! I really enjoyed this conversation with Brando as we explore this crazy and tangled up world of ticketing. I learned a ton, and so will you on this week’s episode of Roadcase!!

    Maggie Arthur (Calling All Crows)

    Maggie Arthur (Calling All Crows)

April was Sexual Assault Awareness Month and to help us shed light on this important issue, Maggie Arthur stopped by to highlight the amazing work she does at Calling All Crows to ensure sure that music venues are safe spaces for all.  Maggie recently joined Calling All Crows where she is now Director of the Here for the Music division. Prior to joining CAC, Maggie was at Resilience, a Chicago-based rape crisis center and before that, Maggie headed up Our Music My Body, a Chicago-based organization focused on creating an environment for all to enjoy music safely.  To this end, Here for the Music seeks to prevent and end sexual violence and assault in live music spaces, and we discuss, among many topics, not only what individuals can do as bystanders when witnessing a situation, but also how to properly handle and assist if something unfortunate might occur.  Here for the Music also seeks to educate not only the concert-going public as to the broader issue of Sexual Assault in society at-large, but also to educate venue owners and employees as to the importance of sexual assault prevention and what can be done on that front. We all want venues to be safe spaces free from sexual violence, and we applaud the work that Maggie is doing toward achieving this goal for all.  So tune in for this very important interview with Maggie Arthur of Calling All Crows and learn what you can do to make music venues safe for everyone!

    Dom Patience - Promoter

    Dom Patience - Promoter

Promotion is key in the live music industry.
You’ve got the venue, you’ve booked the band, but how do you spread the word about your gig and sell tickets?

Meet Dom Patience, the man responsible for bringing bands such as Gallows, Cancer Bats, Napalm Death and Hadouken to the UK's South Coast.

Carving a career for himself as an independent promoter since the age of 16, Dom brings some of the hottest names in rock to the south’s most loved grassroots music venues, such as Anvil Rock Bar Bournemouth, The Old Fire station, The Joiners in Southampton and The Loft.

This year, many rock music fans watched as concerts and festivals were cancelled and the music industry was hit hard by the Covid-19 pandemic.
As someone who's job is solely in live music, Dom talks about how he was affected when tour cancellations started coming in thick and fast as the virus spread across Europe and countries started closing their borders.
He tells us how he watched ticket sales for his shows drop to virtually nothing and explains different ways fans can support the music scene as things start to pick up again.

Dom talks about the fight smaller music venues are currently having to survive and how the UK’s Government could be doing more to support the sector, he gives his thoughts on bands being asked to take pay cuts to play shows and festivals next year and tells us which upcoming talent he's got his eye on and who he hopes to book the future.

Episode 4: What is the future of the live sector?

Episode 4: What is the future of the live sector?

This episode was recorded live during a Skiddle webinar on 23rd July 2020.

The live sector has, like almost everything else, been left devastated by the ongoing Coronavirus crisis; venues are closing, people are out of work, businesses are going under.

According to one estimate, 80% of UK music venues are under serious risk of permanent closure and £900m has been wiped from the £1.1bn live sector this year, while the Association of Independent Festivals says that 92% of its members face permanent collapse.

But we are now beginning to emerge from the other side.

The Government has announced the return of indoor and outdoor live events, along with a £1.57 billion rescue package for the nation’s stricken music, arts and culture venues.

But is it enough? Does the government's roadmap to recovery make sense? Are the newly published guidelines realistic?

To help us take stock and answer some of these questions (and plenty more) Skiddle's David Blake is joined by: Michael Kill, CEO of the Night Time Industries Association; John Rostron, the Executive Chair of the Association of Independent Promoters; Alice Woods, DJ, promoter and co founder of Meat Free, Under One Roof and Shake Your Soul, and Tumi Williams, a member of the Cardiff Music Board and a Senior Booking Agent at Bombarda Agency.

Episode 3: Racism in the music industry: what can we do about it?

Episode 3: Racism in the music industry: what can we do about it?

As the music industry pledges to tackle institutional racism in the wake of the killing of George Floyd and the Black Lives Matter protests which have erupted across the world, Skiddle’s David Blake is joined by three guests - Amanda Maxwell (Shesaid.so/Freelance Queens), Kwame Kwaten (Ferocious Talent/consultant/producer) and Kitty Amor (DJ/Motherland) - to discuss what is being done and what more we can do.

Episode 2: Coronavirus: how can grassroots music venues survive?

Episode 2: Coronavirus: how can grassroots music venues survive?

According to the Music Venue Trust, over 550 grassroots venues in the UK face the very
real threat of permanent closure in the wake of the Coronavirus pandemic. The knock on
effects, culturally, are hard to imagine.

So how are venues up and down the country coping and responding to the situation. How
bad is it? What can we do? And how might the loss of grassroots music venues affect the
wider industry and the very fabric of our culture?

Skiddle’s head of content David Blake is joined by the Music Venue Trust CEO, Mark
Davyd; the owner of the famous Brudenell Social Club in Leeds, Nathan Clark, and Toni
Coe-Brooker, production and programming manager at the Green Door Store in Brighton.
