Bob Power (A Tribe Called Quest, Erykah Badu, SO Many More)

Bob Power (A Tribe Called Quest, Erykah Badu, SO Many More)
Bob Power is a legendary Engineer and Mixer who's known for his work with A Tribe Called Quest on ground breaking albums like "The Low End Theory" and "Midnight Marauders", having also worked with more artists than I can name (De La Soul, Jungle Bros, Erykah Badu, D'Angelo, The Roots, Meshell Ndegeocello, and so many more).

In our conversation Bob tells me about his work on these albums, how he got his start in music, and we even get into some mix tips.

Portions of this interview appear in the video breakdown of Midnight Marauders, go check out that full video on the Digging the Greats YouTube.

Afrika Baby Bam (Jungle Brothers, Native Tongues)

Afrika Baby Bam (Jungle Brothers, Native Tongues)
Afrika Baby Bam, or as he’s also known, Bam - is a member of the Jungle Brothers - an incredibly influential hip hop group who were part of the Native Tongues Collective. I've talked about the Native Tongues in multiple Digging the Greats videos - but today I’m excited to bring you my recent conversation with Bam himself.

We get into the formation of the Jungle Brothers, the Native Tongues, stories like recording the classic song “Buddy”, making the classic Hip House track “I’ll House You”, meeting Queen Latifah for the first time, and his new project, which is punk rock.

Jungle Brothers - Done By The Forces Of Nature

Jungle Brothers - Done By The Forces Of Nature

Given time, pressure, and the varied perspective that arrives with age, we can be forgiven for re-imagining the opinions we formed in our halcyon days.

But as long as music bears the burden of snapping us back to the moment when we first made its acquaintance, it feels, if only for a brief time, like we haven't aged a day.

Ryan's friend Daniel Rich sits in on this show, and he brought us a gift: The Jungle Brothers' Done By The Forces of Nature. And there, in the way back machine, he is...nineteen, staring down the semi opaque business end of a flimsy promotional pressing LP, slapping it on a substandard turntable, and falling hard for whatever bumped and grooved out of the tinny speaker set.

For all that the Jungle Brothers didn't quite accomplish in comparison with the overt popularity of some of their Native Tongues brethren, this album signaled the serious Afrocentric arrival of an act with real chops, and even in a period of volcanic creativity in the genre, the LP rings as fresh today as it did in 1989.

Director and screenwriter Kemp Powers sits down with us to discuss De La Soul's  sophomore effort, De La Soul Is Dead. We get into DLS's shift in image and tone, the growth of Prince Paul as a producer, and Kemp's very , ahem, special connection to the song "Let, Let Me In"

And stay tuned to the very end for a short bonus beats on Kemp's love of dancehall music!

Salaam Remi on Jungle Brothers' "Straight Out The Jungle" (1988)

Salaam Remi on Jungle Brothers' "Straight Out The Jungle" (1988)

There's a certain lo-fi feel to Jungle Brothers' debut effort, Straight Out The Jungle.  The group made the record at home using early sampling technology, but its influence is undeniable. It brought together house music, jazz, and hip-hop, and marked the beginning of the Native Tongues family. Groups like De La Soul and ATCQ would become the biggest members of the collective, but don't sleep on this heater.

Record  producer Salaam Remi sits down with us to chat about the JB's place in the Native Tongues family, the countless flipped samples throughout the record, and his personal journey as a super producer.

This week, we sneak behind the curtain a bit for one of our first attempts at making a podcast. Only Gary had a real mic at the time, so the sound quality overall isn't great, but toward the beginning, you do get to hear us brainstorm a bit about the direction of the podcast, let's you into our thought process and gives you a peek behind the scenes! Adam Mansbach on Black Sheep's "A Wolf in Sheep's Clothing" (1991)

Adam Mansbach on Black Sheep's "A Wolf in Sheep's Clothing" (1991)

When Black Sheep joined the Native Tongues family in 1989, they brought an irreverent and humorous tone to the hip-hop collective. Native Tongues had lighthearted rappers in the group to begin with, but Black Sheep took it one step further. They were witty, they teased, and they flipped some iconic samples. And oh yea, and they released one of the biggest hits of the '90s, The Choice is Yours (Revisited).

Writer Adam Mansbach sits down with Oliver to discuss Black Sheep's debut record, the gangsta rap blacklash happening at the time, and the more problematic parts of the record.
