UND Hockey Preview vs Minnesota | Oct. 21, 2022

The Herald's Brad Schlossman previews No. 7 UND's series against No. 1 Minnesota and the next edition of the rivalry. Last week's series against Quinnipiac gets recapped before breaking down how the Hawks can bounce back from the tie and loss. Luckily, from a standings standpoint, the rest of the NCHC had a rough week.

This series should see some dynamic freshman production as well.

Huskies Hockey Insider -- ep. 38

R.J. Enga was born in Germany, where his father was stationed in the U.S. Air Force, and he speaks fluent German and played a lot of soccer in his early years. When his family moved to Colorado Springs, he went to an Air Force hockey game, fell in love with hockey and started playing. He went on to play soccer, hockey and baseball for Culver Military Academy (Ind.) before playing hockey for Colorado College (1991-95) and then professionally until 2007. Enga coached in the NAHL for the Topeka Roadrunners and in the USHL for the Chicago Steel before being an assistant coach at Colorado College from 2014-21. A conversation on the 3.3 degrees of separation in hockey with the St. Cloud State men's hockey team's new director of operations and video coordinator.

Since the first season of the NCHC in 2013-14, the conference has established itself as arguably the most consistently outstanding of the six in NCAA Division I men's hockey.

The eight-team conference has had at least one team reach the national championship game in each of the last five seasons that there has been an NCAA tournament and won four national titles. In the eight seasons that the Frozen Four has taken place since the NCHC began, the conference has had 12 teams make the Frozen Four.

For comparison, in that span, Hockey East has had seven teams reach the Frozen Four, the Big Ten has had five, the ECAC three and the WCHA one.

During an #AskWellensAnything for the weekly Bulldog Insider Newsletter, a reader submitted a question to Matt Wellens of the Duluth News-Tribune and The Rink Live, asking him to pick an All-NCHC team for the first eight seasons and also to pick an All-UMD team in that span. Wellens reached out and asked me to do the same and pick an All-SCSU team.

My All-NCHC team ended up being heavily influenced by the four teams that have dominated the conference: Denver, Minnesota Duluth, North Dakota and St. Cloud State. Those four teams have combined to win five of the seven NCHC Frozen Faceoff titles and all eight of the NCHC Penrose Cup (regular season) titles.

On Jan. 8, Chase Brand scored on a set play off a faceoff to snap a 15-game streak without a goal. Brand talks about his season to this point with The Rink Live's Mick Hatten. He also discusses his winding road to get to the St. Cloud State men's hockey team: four junior teams in two leagues, de-committing from Miami and going through the recruiting process a second time.

He also talks about fun subjects like who the Huskies' best golfer is, some of the intricacies of fly fishing, his athletic family (mom and dad were college athletes, his sister plays in the NWHL), his love of baseball and what it was like growing up in Nevis, Minn.

OMAHA, Neb. — St. Cloud State men's hockey forward Micah Miller discusses what may have been a key to his quick start in the season-opener, his background growing up in northern Minnesota, his track and field career, who his roommate is during the three-week NCHC pod and what they are doing to pass their down time.

All this and more on this week's podcast with The Rink Live's Mick Hatten.

Huskies Hockey Insider -- ep. 8

The career in hockey of Dave Shyiak includes a couple of pretty big connections to former St. Cloud State assistant coach Gibbons. Gibbons retired after last season and Shyiak was hired to replace him in May.

But the two go back farther. Gibbons was an assistant coach for Northern Michigan from 1983-88. One of the players that Gibbons recruited to play for the Wildcats was ... you guessed it, Shyiak, who played junior hockey for the Humboldt Broncos before playing forward for Northern Michigan from 1987-91.

After a season of pro hockey, Shyiak coached in juniors for the Kimberly Dynamiters and Merritt Centenials before getting back to college hockey as a coach. He was an assistant coach for Northern Michigan from 1995-2005, the head coach at Alaska-Anchorage from 2005-13 and Western Michigan from 2014-20.

If you have a conversation with Kevin Fitzgerald, you quickly learn that he is someone who enjoys a lot of aspects of life.

He's a former high school baseball shortstop, has been an intramural soccer and hockey referee, enjoys being an accounting major and all of his hockey stops along the way.

Fitzgerald grew up playing in Hinsdale, Ill., a suburb of Chicago, then played junior hockey in Topeka, Kan., Burlington, Vt., and Aberdeen, S.D., before getting to St. Cloud State. The senior was named an alternate captain for the Huskies on Wednesday and joins The Rink Live's Mick Hatten to talk about all of this and more.

Huskies Hockey Insider -- ep. 3

Will Hammer has been a part of the St. Cloud hockey scene for a lot of years. He played his high school hockey at Cathedral and is beginning his senior season as a forward for the St. Cloud State men's hockey team.

Hammer, 24, took a much bigger role with the Huskies last season. After playing in a combined four games his first two seasons, Hammer played 32 games last season mostly at center.

Between Cathedral and St. Cloud State, Hammer played three seasons in the North American Hockey League with the Aberdeen Wings and Minnesota Magicians. Hammer talks about his challenges and triumphs of his career, his battle with a heart issue that has been surgically fixed, taking master's classes, this season's team, his foray into music and more in this episode with The Rink Live's Mick Hatten.
