From Brian: In November of 2021, my cattle dog RED passed away from a very aggressive inoperable nasal tumor. And just last week at the end of February 2022, my beagle VIVIAN passed away after a long bout with lymphoma. The loss of Red and Vivian has been devastating for me personally and incredibly impactful to Good Dog Workshop and the work am do with my clients. We at Good Dog Workshop know that you—our listeners—grew to know and love Vivian and Red through the podcast and we appreciate your support during our grief.

As we all know, life keeps moving on no matter what happens or how we feel, and we must continue to move as well. So we include in this podcast our thoughts and experiences as we look for two new assistants to add to Brian's pack.

This week, I talk with dog trainer and shelter dog expert, Trish McMillan about what families with kids should look for when adopting a dog from a shelter. Some of what we discuss can be controversial, but we both agree that the stakes are too high to take a risk with the wrong dog when kids are in the picture. We tackle popular concepts such as "adopt don't shop" and "forever home" and address how both of those can set families up to fail - or feel like failures. Fortunately, there are lots of ways families can find the right dog, and we chat about options that can leave families feeling guilt free.

Well it sure has been a whirlwind since we got our precious, beautiful, perfect little devil puppy! The amount of emotions over the last few weeks have been all over the charts. This dog is making us pay for every ounce of cuteness but the cuteness never ends!! I finally forced a few hours of time for a solo episode to catch you all up on the entire journey from picking her up to her current pleasure of peeing and chewing our entire house! I once again let you into my mental health struggles as they have definitely been pressed with the lack of sleep but also once again the process of talking it all out (the parts that I can) has been an immensely cathartic experience. None of the mental health tools in my toolbelt work quite like  a long talk with someone i'm interested in. It's a pleasant surprise to find out that can be myself! So stop on by and hear the whole tale of life’s curveballs, puppies, oilers pain, politics, and a full breakdown of tomorrow’s UFC fight night along with some vulnerable truths of what I’m currently struggling through! All with a pinch of love and hippy cheese like always! Love you all!
