    Bernard Robinson: Former NBA Player

    Bernard Robinson: Former NBA Player

Bernard Robinson is in the house! We are honored to learn from another DC area great and one of our favorites to wear a Michigan jersey. We love trying to help the young hoopers coming up on this podcast and Bernard shares great stories and knowledge in this one.

Robinson grew up taking basketball very serious at a young age.  The 6'6'' left hander starred at Michigan before being selected 45th overall by the Charlotte Bobcats in the 2004 NBA Draft. He told us all about growing up in DC, ABCD Camp, Michigan, his journey to the NBA, playing for an expansion team, James "Flight" White, DerMarr Johnson, Kevin Martin, hilarious Michael Jordan & Adam Morrison story, Gerald Wallace, Brevin Knight, wild experiences overseas, his management firm, and MUCH more.

We loved our time with B-Rob and can't thank him enough for taking the time to hang out and talk hoops with us. Truly one of the nicest and realist guests that we have had on this show and ranks as one of our favorites. What he is doing for retired athletes, as well as giving back to the youth and the game is bigtime and we have so much respect for him.

    Thanks Bernard Robinson!

Oscar Schmidt: The Holy Hand (Basketball's All-Time Leading Scorer & Hall of Famer)

Oscar Schmidt: The Holy Hand (Basketball's All-Time Leading Scorer & Hall of Famer)

We have a legend, basketball royalty, and an all-time great in the house today. He is known as the Holy Hand and it is a true honor to have Hall of Famer Oscar Schmidt hang out and share his hoops story with us. The love, passion, and loyalty that he showed on the court to his teammates, country, and the game of basketball is now told in his own words.

Oscar Schmidt is without a doubt one of the greatest players to ever play the game. We can’t possibly include all of his achievements in this summary because they are truly endless. He has scored over 49,000 career points with the most points in FIBA, Olympics, and even all of basketball history. Oscar helped lead Brazil to a historic victory over the USA in the 1987 Pan Am games where he torched the Americans scoring 35 of his 46 points in the second half. This game was considered one of the main reasons why the 1992 Dream Team was formed. Oscar was selected in that legendary 1984 NBA Draft but chose not to play out of loyalty to his country so he could play for his National Team instead. Players such as Larry Bird, Kobe Bryant and many others idolized Oscar, and any NBA great knows what an incredible player he was.

Our time with Oscar was life-changing. He shared some incredible stories about growing up in Brazil, playing for the National Team, defeating the USA, The 92 Dream Team, Kobe Bryant, Larry Bird, Charles Barkley, playing for the Nets in the Summer League, the story behind the nickname “The Holy Hand”, Hall of Fame, and MUCH more. We can’t say enough how much this conversation meant to us and how special of an experience this was to learn from an all-time great. We know you will appreciate this one just as much as we did.

    Thank you Oscar Schmidt!

Len Elmore: Maryland & ACC Legend

Len Elmore: Maryland & ACC Legend

Hoop fans will be excited for this one. We get to hang out with Maryland and ACC legend Len Elmore today! The stories and experiences shared about the game in this episode are amazing, but as you listen you will learn quickly that he’s also done a lot outside of basketball. In fact, we’re still trying to figure out was he hasn’t done.

Elmore grew up in the New York City area and starred at Power Memorial Academy. He led his team to being ranked number one in the nation and helped get them to the city championship in 1970. Elmore went on to play at Maryland where he earned all ACC honors three times and is still the schools all-time leading rebounder. He was selected to the ACC 50th Anniversary men’s basketball team where he was recognized as one of the 50 greatest players in ACC history. Elmore continued to have a 10 year long professional career in both the ABA and NBA, and the stories he shared about the journey are inspiring. After his playing days he earned a J.D. from Harvard Law School and began a career as a law prosecutor. You may also recognize him as an important voice of March Madness as he served as a color commentator and broadcaster calling some historic and memorable games.

We loved our time with Len. We learned so much about the game and more. His resume is an impressive one and we are so grateful for his time. He was an absolute joy to hangout with and we know you will enjoy this one just as much as we did.

    Thank you Len Elmore!

Eddie Gill: The Thrill (Former Weber State & NBA Player)

Eddie Gill: The Thrill (Former Weber State & NBA Player)

We got a great episode to start the weekend off right. Eddie Gill is a “bring your lunch pale” type player who earned everything that he got. We are thrilled to have The Thrill himself on the show today. He is somebody who refused to be outworked throughout his career and hearing his story will be an inspiring one especially for our younger listeners.

Gill started his career going the Junior College route before finishing his last two seasons at Weber State. He was the floor general on the Weber State team that has one of the more memorable upsets against a great North Carolina team in first round. After going undrafted, Gill had to outwork and do the little things that most players don’t want to do in order to find his way in the NBA. We got to hear all about the hard work and dedication put in to make a successful 12 year professional career including 7 seasons in the NBA.

We loved learning more about Gill’s journey. It was fun taking a ride down memory lane and talking about his High School and AAU experience, the unforgettable upset against North Carolina, his journey to the NBA, his memories from Malice at the Palace, winning the Belgium Cup, and much more! We can’t thank Eddie enough for being so gracious with his time and all of the wonderful insight shared in this one.

    Thank you Eddie Gill!

Mark Hendrickson: From the Hardwood to the Diamond (NBA & MLB Player)

Mark Hendrickson: From the Hardwood to the Diamond (NBA & MLB Player)

Mark Hendrickson is on the Podcast today and there just won’t be another episode quite like this one. This is one of those low-key stories that isn’t talked about nearly enough. When you look at the list of guys who have played four years in both the NBA and the MLB, Hendrickson is the only name on that list. The story almost doesn't seem real, so we had to track down Mark and actually hear this one for ourselves.

After a successful baseball and basketball career at Washington State University, Hendrickson chose basketball and was drafted 31st overall by the Philadelphia 76ers in the 1996 NBA Draft, which is arguably the greatest draft of all time. He played four years in the NBA with four different teams before he elected to switch professional careers to a league in which he was drafted for six separate times. He went on to play ten seasons in the MLB, and his success on the field led most of the basketball world to somehow forget all about him.

Hendrickson's story of transitioning from the NBA to the MLB is one that may never be duplicated again, and we can’t thank him enough for sharing his experiences with us. We learned so much, but we also heard plenty of hilarious stories between his NBA and MLB lifestyle. Of course we are in awe of his athletic talents, but honestly we are even more impressed with the kindness Mark showed us and we really appreciate his time and the stories he shared today.

    Thank you Mark!

Earl Boykins: Determination (Former NBA Player)

Earl Boykins: Determination (Former NBA Player)

You probably aren’t even reading this summary because you are THAT excited to start listening to this episode and we don’t blame you one bit. Earl Boykins was a fan favorite everywhere that he played. You may remember him as the second shortest player in NBA history and the shortest player to ever hang 30 in a game. We just remember him as a damn good basketball player who never quite got the credit he deserved.

At 5’5’’ and 135 lbs, Boykins left gyms in awe his entire career. You probably didn’t know he was the 2nd leading scorer in the nation his senior year at Eastern Michigan, or the schools all-time leader in assists. You would think this would be an easy road to destiny, but you are mistaken. Earl was always under the radar, and he would make a 13-year NBA career of proving everyone wrong. He also showed the world no matter how small you might think he is, he would always have big contributions to his team.

We loved hanging out with Earl and learning about his incredible basketball journey. We also love that he is still involved with the game, as he is currently the Basketball Director of Student-Athlete Development at University of Arkansas, alongside ex-Nevada coach and fan favorite Eric Musselman. If there is one thing that we have learned about Boykins in this episode, its that he is STILL giving big contributions to his team. Just this time it’s on the sidelines…and we should all know by know to not underestimate his abilities.

    Enjoy!

    Thank you Coach Boykins!

Rex Walters: Former NBA Player & Coach

Rex Walters: Former NBA Player & Coach

It’s our pleasure to announce that we have Rex Walters on the podcast today! Walters was a can’t-miss talent who played with a lot of pride and passion for both Northwestern and Kansas. After leading Kansas to a Final Four appearance, he was selected 16th overall in the 1993 NBA Draft by the New Jersey Nets. He went on to have a successful 7 year NBA career with the New Jersey Nets, Philadephia 76ers, and the Miami Heat.

Walters carried that same passion that he had as a player onto the sidelines for his coaching career. He spent a few seasons as an assistant coach for Valparaiso and Florida Atlantic before taking on the head coaching role at the latter. Most of you may remember his time as the Head Coach at San Francisco from 2008-2016, but our Nevada Wolfpack fans will remember his 2018-2019 season as an assistant to Coach Musselman at Nevada.

We had so much fun hearing about Walter's journey to the NBA. He shared so many great stories about his background and development as a young player. We also learn more about his Final Four run, rookie season in New Jersey, those grueling Heat vs Knicks series, playing for Pat Riley, his transition from being a player to a coach, his role in the movie Blue Chips and so much more!

The passion this guy had as a player was unmatched and you can see that same attitude in his coaching as well. But what really came across in this episode is his love for the game. We felt it and we know that you all will too. Thanks again Coach Walters!

Hope you all enjoy this one as much as we did.

Also- If you love Coach Walters in this episode then you might want to check out his Podcast titled "Real Talk Basketball with Rex Walters". It is definitely worth the listen!

Jim McIlvaine: Big Mac (Marquette Great & NBA Player)

Jim McIlvaine: Big Mac (Marquette Great & NBA Player)

Our 2nd Marquette alumni is on the podcast today! Jim McIlvaine joins us on our 60th episode and shares so many great stories about his AAU, High School, College and NBA playing days. McIlvaine is truly one of the most underrated rim protectors of his time. He is the ALL-TIME leading shot blocker in Marquette basketball history and its not even close! His 399 erased shots is well ahead of second ranked Amal McCaskill with 175 blocks. McIlvaine was the NABC Defensive Player of the Year and Great Midwest Player of the Year in his final college season. The Washington Bullets selected McIlvaine with the 32nd pick in 1994 NBA Draft. He spent some time with the Seattle Sonics before ending his career with the New Jersey Nets.

Jim shares so much great information about the business side of the NBA and has great insight about the professional life that the casual basketball fan might not stop to think about. He is truly one of the most genuine and open guests that we have had on this show and we couldn’t get enough of him. He also has a podcast called “Marq’d Men” if you can’t get enough of him either.

    Enjoy!

Lou Lamoriello on The Cam & Strick Podcast

Lou Lamoriello on The Cam & Strick Podcast

We figured since it's our 50th episode we'd bring something special to the table. Lou Lamoriello, the Hall of Fame Hockey Executive and architect of the three-time Stanley Cup champion New Jersey Devils, gave a very rare, long-form interview. Lamoriello won't give you much, but still when he speaks people listen. He's the Godfather of hockey and does things only one way, Lou's way. While his players may slightly fear him while under his umbrella, there's no denying the respect he commands and the family-like environment he's created with every organization he's run. At 78 years old, Lamoriello remains on top of his game, what a career he's had. From being a baseball coach, a math teacher, to being an athletic director, this guy was enjoying a successful life before anyone truly knew much about Lou Lamoriello. That was before 1987 when the New Jersey Devils came calling....the rest is history. Like some serious history, this guy could go down as the greatest hockey executive of all time. This interview dives into everything and then some. As for Cam Janssen, a former Devils player, to say he was rattled or scared to death before, during, and after this interview wouldn't give it justice.  The interview starts off calm before Andy asks some pressing questions that people want answers to. Like how do you fire your Head Coach with only a handful of games remaining when you have the 2nd best record in the conference? Or how did the Scott Stevens arbitration case with the St. Louis Blues really go down? Did he like working in a hockey-crazed market like Toronto under Brendan Shanahan? Could Stevens play in today's game, was he a dirty player? What about working with George Steinbrenner? Check this out...Lou Lamoriello, exclusively on the Cam and Strick Podcast.
