Fat Fat and All Dat Nonsense

Fat Fat and All Dat Nonsense

Jen and Phil talk about recent reports on a weight loss shot geared towards children.  They believe this could lead to other health problems and is generally a terrible idea.

What is truly a major component is the example set by parents.  Parents should set the example for their children to be disciplined, to put in the hard work to eat properly, to set boundaries/limits for unhealthy items, and to ultimately help their children return to a healthy weight/lifestyle.  As with most things in life, there is no quick fix.  You have to do the work.

Before getting stuck on medication, they suggest maybe first do an evaluation of your lifestyle to see what positive changes you can make to improve your health.  It is important to dedicate time to ourselves to have a healthy mind and body.

Get in on the conversation and let them know what you think.

The ugly truth about cancer, death, and grieving. Can we talk about that? (w/ guest Alix Long)

The ugly truth about cancer, death, and grieving. Can we talk about that? (w/ guest Alix Long)

Phil and Jennifer talk with special guest Alix Long about the ugly truth of a cancer journey.  What it truly means to go through someone's cancer battle, death, and grievance and how to live on.

Alix Long is the owner of Grace Pilates+Yoga, Wake Mindfulness Retreats, and a modern mindfulness expert. She is a speaker, a writer, an intuitive healer, and a mindfulness movement expert. She found her passion for mindfulness through Pilates and has developed a career in mindfulness which she used to heal herself and her family after her late husband died from cancer in 2019. Her powerful healing mindset came from her personal walk with death. She was committed to keeping her promise to her late husband to live fully. That was the beginning of the creation of Wake- which is the culmination of deep therapy, her intense study of healing through personal transformation, and her commitment to becoming an expert in mindfulness.  She is happily remarried to David Long, a fellow widower, and together they have built a beautiful life. She is most proud to have blended their five grieving children and families on their path of healing and growth.

Living through the Highs and Lows of Entrepreneurship (w/ Kirk Coco)

Living through the Highs and Lows of Entrepreneurship (w/ Kirk Coco)

In this episode Jennifer and Phil sit down with Kirk Coco  who discusses the triumphs, hardships, and lessons learned being an entrepreneur.  How to Make It Count through the successes and failures of a business.

A little more about Kirk.  Kirk Coco is a native of New Orleans, who spent 11 years in the United States Navy serving as a Surface Warfare Officer.  During his commission he served as the Anti-Submarine Warfare Officer of the USS CHOSIN, Chief Engineer of the USS PELICAN, Operations Officer of the USS CAMDEN and served onboard the USS RONALD REAGAN as Tactical Action Officer/Readiness Officer for Destroyer Squadron Seven.  Kirk chose to leave the Navy in the wake of Hurricane Katrina to return to New Orleans and help in the rebuilding and renewal of the city.

After a short career with Capital One Bank, Kirk began his initial dream of bringing production and manufacturing back to New Orleans, founding NOLA Brewing Company in 2008. Since Dixie's departure from the city in 2005, NOLA Brewing was the first operating production brewery to open in Orleans Parish.  In May 2015 Kirk began work on NOLA Distilling Company, a craft distillery located just 8 blocks from NOLA.

After selling his distillery and a controlling interest of the brewery’s equity, Kirk served as Director of Operations for Bellwether Technology, the largest Managed Service IT Provider in the Greater New Orleans area, and also served as Director of Operations for NORF Companies, A Louisiana based Opportunity Zone Equity Investment Fund.  He currently is the Director of Support for Susco, LLC, a custom software specializing in the Insurance Services industry.

Kirk was a founding member and President of the LA Brewer’s Guild, an organization of brewers in Louisiana lobbying for a strong commitment from government for the burgeoning craft beer movement.  He also served as a member of the Strategic Advisory Council for Economic Development for the Mayor of New Orleans and as an Advisory Board member for the YAYA Arts Council.  He serves as Vice-Chairman of the Libertarian Party of Orleans and was a voting Delegate for their 2016 and 2020 National Conventions.  Kirk served as a Member of the Board of Directors for The Roots of Music, a non-profit organization committed to maintain the city’s homegrown musical heritage by putting instruments into the hands of New Orleans youths and educating them on their use.

Kirk is a graduate of Louisiana State University where he received his bachelor's degree in Business Administration and his Juris Doctorate. He also earned a Masters in Business Administration from the University of New Orleans in 2003.

Battling Cancer, Life and Legislation (Julie Stokes)

Battling Cancer, Life and Legislation (Julie Stokes)

In this episode of Make It Count, Jennifer and Phil talk with Julie Stokes about her journey through politics, surviving breast cancer, and making it count through her cancer advocacy.

Julie Stokes is CEO of Flame Consulting, CFO of Stokes & Associates, Founder of Ellevate Louisiana and Co-Founder of the Cancer Advocacy Group of Louisiana.  She is a CPA, a nonpartisan policy advocate, former state representative, a civic leader, and a speaker. Julie was diagnosed with cancer in 2017, and after a nine-month battle she was declared and remains cancer-free.  She turned her personal fight with cancer into a legislative mission by becoming an advocate for patients and survivors; she believes that we should never place a patient’s life in jeopardy because of bureaucracy.

Besides legislation she has helped to pass, Julie is Making It Count through the Founding of Ellevate Louisiana, which is an organization of women leaders around the state of Louisiana working together to make non-partisan solutions to build a better future for Louisiana.  For more information go to EllevateLA.org

Julie is also the founder of SCAN (Survivor’s Cancer Action Network).  SCAN is a private social network that unites cancer survivors, doctors, scientists and philanthropists to improve the patient experience and ultimately drive outcomes for cancer care in the state of Louisiana.  Go to Scan-la.org for more information

If you or someone you know is struggling financially and has cancer, Julie can be reached at julie@stokesflame.com with resources that may help.

Cancer Season Mukbang - Ep #2 Beets N Thyme

Cancer Season Mukbang - Ep #2 Beets N Thyme

Before you even mention it, I know I'm a week late delivering this episode😔 I'm still getting logistics sorted out but it is in fact... in FULL effect.

In this episode my favorite morning workout partner Mina Seck swoops through with one of her dank azz charcuterie boards for us to feast upon. We discuss the transformative nature of the pandemic, reclaiming peace, the future of her business BeetsNThyme, and how two wacky black chicks from the states initially met on a random night in Torino, Italy over that smoke🌬️

Honestly, I'm not even sure if this episode can be considered an actual "podcast"? To put in my faithful indentured editor's words (my son Ori) "calling this episode a podcast is a stretch"🤨 ... but we gone roll with it!
