Episode 611: The 2023 Lumps of Coal

Episode 611: The 2023 Lumps of Coal

Like the Daytona 500, it's a tradition unlike any other. A look back at the films this year that just made our heads spin in circles about why they are just so not good.

Out of the dozens of films The Deucecast Movie Show loved, out of the hundreds of movies the Deucecast Movie Show liked... there are a handful of movies -- or in #TwitterlessDrEarl's case, tropes, patterns, directors and the like -- that just didn't land... or maybe landed with a crash and burn in a bad way.

First up, a quick spoiler-free review of the latest, and possibly final film in this current DCU series -- "Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom". Some honest takes on what worked (a few things) and what didn't (a lot of things).

Then, the top (bottom) movies of the year for Mikey, d$, and #XLessDrEarl... the movies that made all of them cringe, throw popcorn, get upset at how bad they are, or even disappointed at how good they were supposed to be.

The last episode of the year!!

I WANT MY PIG BACK! - Pig Movie Review

I WANT MY PIG BACK! - Pig Movie Review

Released in 2021, 'Pig' is an intriguing tale.

Pig is not an uplifting film. It’s not an action film either. In fact, it’s actually quite a depressing film, and certainly the most serious of Nicholas Cage’s recent works. It’s also a film that I highly recommend.

There is so much subtlety and nuance in it, and it touches on some important issues. Nicholas Cage’s character in the film was once a successful chef who has renounced his past life and chosen to live in the forest, shut off from the world, with only a pig for company. The storyline starts when the pig is kidnapped.

Grief is a theme that runs strongly through Pig, as is the false sense of success that is overwhelmingly prevalent in our society. Be patient with this film, it’s worth it.

First, it seems like yet another run of the mill revenge tale about a reclusive man who has his truffle pig kidnapped. Initially, it follows the same cliches as action hits like 'John Wick', but about 10 minutes into this film, you start to realize that this is going to be something so much more. This grim tale of grief and loss examines what it means to be successful, and it's one of the biggest sleeper hits I've seen.

Episode 174: - The Northman & The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent
Robert Egger's Viking epic finally arrives in A24's 'The Northman', a historic tale of blood and vengeance that finds a young prince traveling back to his homeland to avenge his father, save his mother, and murder his traitorous uncle. Then, Nicolas Cage is Nicolas Cage in 'The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent', an offbeat comedy that finds the legendary actor playing a fictionalized version of himself at the end of his career when he's suddenly offered the opportunity to make a few more dollars, danger withstanding. Finally, Fast X loses it's director, the next Spider-Man film gets delayed, and what's happening at the box office? Movie News, Movie Reviews, and More every Tuesday on Off Script Film Review!
