A Critique of Dr. Craig Carter's Definition of Biblicism

A Critique of Dr. Craig Carter's Definition of Biblicism
In this episode, we review an interview that Dr. Matthew Barrett did with Dr. Craig Carter, where he was asked the question, "what is biblicism" and what is wrong with it. We look briefly at how Dr. James White frames this issue, and then we dive into Dr. Carter's comments. We also read from Phillip Shaff and we read from Athanasius himself.

    353 - The Crusades

    353 - The Crusades

From 1095 to 1291 CE, thousands and thousands of knights, peasants, nobles, soldiers, and more left Europe for the Holy Land around Jerusalem to take land and power away from Muslims, and into Christian hands. Pope Urban II issued a speech in 1095 calling Christian to take up arms and reclaim "Christian" lands. As incentive, he promised salvation for all who died fighting for what he said was God's will.  But was it ever about God's will? Or was it about Pope Urban's will? Were the Crusades ever really about anything celestial? Or were they about man and power?  Were they mostly about the Catholic Church struggling to consolidate power amongst European Christian monarchs and make sure Christian leaders knew who was really in charge? Holy War? Or power grab? Either way, the decree of Pope Urban set much of the western world on a path we are still following today nearly a full 1,000 years later.

    11. Arianism: From the Beginnings Through Nicaea - Part 1 of 3

    11. Arianism: From the Beginnings Through Nicaea - Part 1 of 3

Dr. John Rao discusses early Christianity and the Greco-Roman world from the beginnings of Arianism through Nicea. The Arian Crisis involved every single aspect of Christian life and growth: theology, philosophy, Church-State relations, pastoral organization and liturgy. Dr. John Rao discusses this complex Affair in three talks, the first of which covers the roots of the heresy, the work of Arius and the condemnation of his ideas at the Council of Nicaea.

    13. Arianism: Post-Nicaean Arianism - Part 3 of 3

    13. Arianism: Post-Nicaean Arianism - Part 3 of 3

Dr. John Rao discusses early Christianity and the Greco-Roman world from Arianism to Post-Nicaean Arianism. A final discussion of Arianism concerns the work of the Emperor Constantius to replace the decision of Nicaea with an heretical or ambiguous definition of Catholic faith. The Papacy, St. Hilary of Poitiers and the West enter into the story, along with Cappadocian Fathers. Dr. John Rao continues the discussion until the return to Orthodoxy at the second Ecumenical Council in Constantinople.

„Samotnica. Dwa życia Marii Dulębianki” to opowieść o kobiecie w P jak podróży i o Mariach w czasach zmiany.

Episode 99: Stranger in the Manger - Was Jesus Creator or Created? James Walker at an ExJW conference [Part 2]

Episode 99: Stranger in the Manger - Was Jesus Creator or Created? James Walker at an ExJW conference [Part 2]

On part two president of Watchman Fellowship, James Walker, concludes his keynote on the nature of God and the Trinity presented at the Witness Now for Jesus Ex-Jehovah's Witness conference. We examine the history behind some of the classic heretical teachings that confronted the early Christianity, how they reappear in our time and how you can recognize them. We hope these insights will give you practical and edifying truths as you give a defense for the hope that is in you to friends, family, and loved ones who don't know Jesus.

As we learned last week, the doctrine of God as Three-in-One, the Trinity, is absolutely central to our faith. Any deviation from understanding this teaching inevitably results in false doctrines and heresy.

Historical councils of the Church throughout history have rigorously addressed the aberrant views of the Trinity, such as the Council of Nicea (325 A.D.) and the Council of Chalcedon (451 A.D.). Yet despite these efforts, heretical doctrines regarding the nature of God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit resurface in non-Christian religions and cults.

How might you address objections to God as Three-in-One? Are you prepared to give a defense of the Trinity? What would you say to a Mormon who might object that the word "Trinity" is not found in the Bible, or a Muslim who says it is blasphemy to refer to God as three distinct Persons?

What might you say to someone who argues Jesus is not God? Or that only the Father is God? How might you answer someone who would claim God is not really three Persons, but just appears to us in three different modes?

James Walker is a former fourth-generation Mormon who is currently president of Watchman Fellowship, an evangelical apologetics ministry focused on interfaith evangelism. He is author of The Concise Guide to Today's Religions and Spirituality (watchman.org/ConciseGuide), What the Qur'an Really Teaches about Jesus (watchman.org/Quran), and coauthor of The Truth Behind The Secret (bit.ly/TruthSecret). He is the cofounder of the Atheist & Christian Book Club (AtheistChristianBookClub.com) and cohosts Mormons in Transition Meetup in north Texas (ExMoDFW.com).

Episode 98: Stranger in the Manger - Was Jesus Creator or Created? James Walker at an ExJW conference [Part 1]

Episode 98: Stranger in the Manger - Was Jesus Creator or Created? James Walker at an ExJW conference [Part 1]

Was Jesus the creator of all things or was He actually a created being? Creator or creature? God with us or the angel Michael with us? These are foundational questions for Jehovah's Witnesses and other controversial religions. This two-part episode of Apologetics Profile features Watchman Fellowship president, James Walker, sharing a keynote message given at the Witness Now for Jesus Conference of former Jehovah's Witnesses. This message provides helpful reminders and insights about the uniqueness and wonder of seeing God as One God and as three distinct Persons. The doctrine of the Trinity can be difficult to wrap our minds around, but it is absolutely foundational for our faith.

No matter where you are in your walk with Christ, we hope this presentation will be helpful and edifying to you this Christmas season as you reach out to those who don't know Christ. So come and see! Come and celebrate the incarnate Immanuel, God with us, the Babe lying in a manger wrapped in swaddling clothes who is also Creator and Lord of the heavens and earth.

    9 - Arianism

    9 - Arianism

Dr. John Rao treats here of the roots of Arianism, its rather simple basic beliefs, and its expansion in the wake of the Council of Nicaea through till the victory of the orthodox at the Council of Constantinople. The Arian Crisis of the 300's is shown to be very much tied in with political machinations and episcopal "empire-building". Reaction to it did, however, lead to a sound development of Catholic doctrine.

    The Incarnational Principle

    The Incarnational Principle
The Incarnation of Jesus - His taking on flesh was argued and thought about for the first three centuries, almost four! But the fact that Jesus is 100% God and 100% man shows us something about the realities of our own life, and especially our life in Christ! We live in an Incarnational Reality.

Oneness Pentecostals Exposed (Pt.2 of 7) Modalism - Paul M. Williams

Oneness Pentecostals Exposed (Pt.2 of 7) Modalism - Paul M. Williams

2013/14 saw Oneness Pentecostals celebrate their centennial anniversary.  However, the heresies that this group holds to regarding the nature of God and the person of Jesus Christ can be traced back much further, to the early beginnings of Christianity in the second and third centuries A.D.  Very early on in it's history, the Church of Jesus Christ has had to withstand and refute the heresies of Modalists who denied the Trinity and instead sought to teach that God is only one in relation to His person.  This teaching explores that early history and in particular addresses what took place at the Council of Nicea in 325 A.D.
