A Conversation with Dr. Mitchell Maki

A Conversation with Dr. Mitchell Maki

DrMitchMakiWelcome to Season 3, Episode 31. We were so excited to connect with Dr. Mitchell T. Maki, the President and CEO of the Go For Broke National Education Center. Dr. Maki is lifetime educator, author, and a leading scholar on the Japanese American redress movement. The Go For Broke National Education Center is a non-profit organization dedicated to preserving the legacy and lessons of the Nisei World War II veterans. “Go For Broke” was the motto of the 442nd Regimental Combat Team, an Army unit composed of Japanese Americans from Hawai’i and the mainland United States. We’ve talked about the 100th and 442nd previously on our podcast, but we’re always happy to continue to raise awareness around their bravery and dedication to this country despite the mass incarceration of over 120,000 Japanese Americans during the war. In our conversation, Dr. Maki shares some keys to making history relevant, why continuing to talk about this time is essential, the importance of intersectionality, and so much more. You can learn a lot and help the Go For Broke National Education Center by visiting their YouTube channel and website as well as making a donation. The funds help spread awareness and education through virtual and physical exhibits. We especially love the Hanashi Oral History Collection! Bridge to the Sun: The Secret Role of the Japanese Americans Who Fought in the Pacific in WWII

Bridge to the Sun: The Secret Role of the Japanese Americans Who Fought in the Pacific in WWII

During World War II, the Nisei, first generation Americans whose parents were immigrants from Japan, fought in the Pacific theater. Their language skills and other intelligence contributions saved lives and shortened the war. And yet, as they served with great distinction, their families back home in America were held in government internment camps under U.S. Executive Order 9066. To discuss the Nisei and the war against Japan, the MacArthur Memorial Podcast hosted Bruce Henderson, author of Bridge to the Sun: The Secret Role of the Japanese Americans Who Fought in the Pacific in World War II.

Ep 389: David Ono on "Defining Courage," His Tribute to JA Soldiers Who Fought and Died in WWII

Ep 389: David Ono on "Defining Courage," His Tribute to JA Soldiers Who Fought and Died in WWII

Filmmaker and broadcast journalist David Ono has created something that defies well-known descriptions. His "Defining Courage" is a tribute to the courage and patriotism of the Japanese American soldiers who fought and died during World War II, even as many of their family members were unjustly imprisoned in desolate prison camps. Combining his live narration with cinematic drone footage of five storied battlefields, accompanied by a choir and musicians, Ono humanizes the stories of those who served in the 100th Infantry Battalion, the 442nd Regimental Combat Team, and the Military Intelligence Service (MIS), while taking us all on an emotional journey to the places where so many lost their lives.

"Setsuko's Secret: Heart Mountain and the Legacy of the Japanese American Incarceration with Shirley Ann Higuchi"

This episode is brought to you by the Museum’s Jenny Craig Institute for the Study of War and Democracy at The National WWII Museum.

Shirley’s American-born parents were children when they were incarcerated at the Heart Mountain War Relocation Center during World War II. Her mother inspired her to author “Setsuko's Secret: Heart Mountain and the Legacy of the Japanese American Incarceration.”

Jan Yanehiro defied familial pressures to follow her dream.

In this podcast, Jan traces her story back to Hawaii, where she grew up a third-generation Japanese-American. She braved upsetting her parents to go to college in California, and after a short stint as a flight attendant following graduation, she came to San Francisco and got a job at a local radio station.

EP48 The MIS in the Pacific Theater During WWII

EP48 The MIS in the Pacific Theater During WWII

In this episode we move forward in time to World War Two and talk about the documentary screening we attended, MIS - Human Secret Weapon. MIS is a documentary about the US Military Intelligence Service, a top-secret program created by the US government to prepare for war with Japan, comprised of Japanese Americans who acted as translators, interrogators, spies, soldiers, and negotiators in the war against Japan during WWII. Their contribution to the war effort is immeasurable, and were credited by General MacArthur with shortening the war by two years.
