When to Take a Gap Year

When to Take a Gap Year

Today I’m talking about when college students should consider taking a gap year or semester. I’m going over what a gap year is, different reasons to take a gap year, and a review of the options. I’m using the term gap year but it could also stand for gap semester or even an early withdrawal from a semester. Gap years tend to refer to time off between high school and the start of college but it can also refer to taking a semester or two off when in college. These breaks are typically when students hit pause on traditional academic work and do something like volunteering, traveling with friends or participating in a therapeutic wilderness or treatment program.

Sam Kang's Fall on Unicorn Peak

Sam Kang's Fall on Unicorn Peak

Hosted by Ania Wiktorowicz, Created by Mari Feher

In June of 2022 Sam Kang was leading a 5.6 trad route on Unicorn Peak in the Tatoosh Range in Washington, when a microwave-size rock came loose, sending them to a 25 foot fall, landing face up on the ground.  Freak accidents like this can happen to anyone and on routes that you have done a thousand times before.  Petra Lebaron-Botts who is a trainee with Portland Mountain Rescue and Roberta Zouain an instructor with the Mazamas were the climbing partners that provided excellent immediate care and aided in the helicopter rescue.

Climbers of Color is well known if you are a climber in the Pacific Northwest. Not only Sam Kang is the founder of Corvallis Climbers of Color in Corvallis, Oregon  and a pillar of the community  but also a solid and experienced climber.

What’s At Stake: Sarah Lugaric on finding and safeguarding our place in the world

What’s At Stake: Sarah Lugaric on finding and safeguarding our place in the world

Guest Sarah Lugaric was drawn to the study of religion and the myths and narratives that all cultures have to help us understand ourselves and our place in the world. Leaving college without the clearest sense of who she was, but with a job on Wall Street, she learned the culture of business and found that she was still interested in what that said about being human. She didn’t love banking, though, and when she finally quit, she took a 30-day sea kayaking trip, rekindling her relationship with nature and herself. She found a consulting company that applied the leadership lessons that had served her so well in the wilderness to organizations and their employees, marrying two important aspects of herself.

When she had the chance to work with the captains of industry and the environmental world to bridge cultures and make positive environmental change, the glacial pace of that change and the missed opportunities caused her to take a break, spending time with her growing family, and unlock different paths to help others live with more grounding, authenticity, and security.

In his episode, find out from Sarah how navigating the world sometimes takes looking inward and protecting space, time, and that which you love…on ROADS TAKEN...with Leslie Jennings Rowley.
