What a 'post-religion' America means for you

What a 'post-religion' America means for you

In this episode, we speak to New York Times opinion writer Jessica Grose about her fascinating 5-part series exploring how Americans are moving away from religion. and what it means for society.

Study after study shows the rise of "nones," people who identify as having no religion. But there's also a plethora of evidence that religion plays a special role in community building. Eric and guest host Rabbi Daniel Septimus, the CEO of Austin's Federation Shalom Austin, explore with Grose what's behind the trends and how communities can adapt.

Losing Our Religion: The Decline of Church Affiliation and the Rise of the "Nones"

Losing Our Religion: The Decline of Church Affiliation and the Rise of the "Nones"

Is America losing its religion? Statistics indicate yes, with a rapid decrease in church affiliation and a marked increase in people who don't identify with organized religion. This episode of Church Potluck features Curt Hersey (Communication), Michael Bailey (political science), and Michael Papazian (philosophy), who each help us explore the fall of religiosity, the rise of non-affiliation, and the evolution of religious identities.

Some topics we address in this episode:

    • What features of contemporary Christianity are turning people away from the Church?
    • Even with this recent decline, religious faith remains resilient in the U.S compared to other industrialized countries. Why? How?
    • How does faith get transmitted from generation to generation, and why are these traditional modes failing?

Join us for some food for thought and something to chew on!

The views expressed on Church Potluck are solely those of the participants and do not represent any organization.

Do people who leave the church ever miss the church?

Do people who leave the church ever miss the church?

Washington Post columnist Perry Bacon Jr. recently wrote a column that has Brian and Aubrey debating the nature of church. They're also shocked by changing statistics about demographics, and end the show with something very special: an interview with Dr. Phil Ryken, the eighth president of Wheaton College in Wheaton, Ill.

Reaching out to Secular Students with Kevin Bolling

Reaching out to Secular Students with Kevin Bolling

Kevin Bolling faced the biggest challenge he's faced as Executive Director of the Secular Student Alliance. He had to manage the group through the pandemic and then resume regular support once the schools opened back up. SSA launched a massive effort to reach 1.4 million students. He will tell us how SSA did it and what is in store for the group. Lastly we take a look at a recent case where a professor settled a lawsuit while refusing to use the preferred pronouns of his students and how that case is really about him and others that attempt to needlessly erase LGBTQ+ people.

Strange Gods and Strong Gods (w/ Tara Isabella Burton)

Strange Gods and Strong Gods (w/ Tara Isabella Burton)

There's been no shortage of commentary on the rise of the "nones," those Americans who claim no religious affiliation, a trend especially notable among younger people. But that doesn't mean we live in a secular age. Matt and Sam talk to Tara Isabella Burton about her new book, Strange Rites: New Religions for a Godless World, and the way our search for meaning and the need for ritual has met our neoliberal economic order.  What does this spiritual churn mean for our politics? Why do reactionary ideas find a ready audience among those disillusioned with modern life? We take up these questions and more in a wide-ranging conversation about the way we live now.

    Here come the "Nones"

    Here come the "Nones"

There's a rising trend in America of people whose religious affiliation can be described as "none". And now they number the same as Evangelical protestants and Catholics. On today's podcast, Jamie and I discuss the trend, and ultimately how the church could respond. Along the way we talk about how to combat the rise of the "nones", consider America as a mission field, and even get a shout out to Jamie's favorite restaurant- Taco Bell.

    Designed for Relationship, not Religion

    Designed for Relationship, not Religion

More and more people are identifying as "nones"- no religious affiliation. That doesn't necessarily mean they don't believe in God, but they're not letting themselves be defined by an organization. That can seem like bad news, but we have to remember, God designed us for relationship, not religion. And we can't let "religion" get in the way of the relationship God wants to have with us through Jesus Christ.
