Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad | Fall Asleep With Me

Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad | Fall Asleep With Me

Joseph Conrad (born Józef Teodor Konrad Korzeniowski) was a Polish-English novelist.

He was born in 1857 and died in 1924.

His twenty years spent as a sailor in the British merchant navy inspired many of his literary works, among which Heart of Darkness is most highly acclaimed.

In this episode of “Fall Asleep with Me”, I read this work’s opening scene. It takes place on the tranquil waters of the River Thames.

165 – Josh Malerman & Ronald Malfi & The Rock N Roll Rhythm of the Novella

Some stories are too short, some are too long, but some stories are just right. It’s the Goldilocks zone: the novella.

What is the secret to crafting a longer story but not letting it run away from you? How do you sustain the terror beyond the shortest form? How do you know what to keep in and what to cut out?

This is the art of the novella, and I’m joined by a pair of expert practitioners to talk it through. Josh Malerman and Ronald Malfi have both published novella collections this year – Ron’s They Lurk and Josh’s Spin a Black Yarn contain multitudes. From motel-lot self-mutilation to deathbed serial killer confessions, via the Oregon backwoods and the core of Saturn(!!), these stories take us to places without wasting a word.

Josh and Ron provide a masterclass on the art of the novella, as well as ALL the enthusiasm you could ever pack into an hour of conversation. This one will put a smile on your face and inspiration in your typin’ fingers!

    Enjoy.

They Lurk was published was published on July 18th by Titan; Spin a Black Yarn was published August 15th by Del Rey

Drop on by for an open house tour of Brian Asman's "Man, F*** This House." (Please take your shoes off, the carpet is brand new.)

We talk about the need for really "good bones" in this episode, and even bone structure, as the Crypt Keeper tries out Korean skincare routines, we recount actual haunted houses we have lived in, and we even give tips on how to cover up book titles with sticky notes for the benefit of any onlookers with delicate constitutions.

You can hire an inspector after your offer is accepted, but right away we should disclose that we spoil the whole plot of the novella in this episode. So, if you want to do a final walkthrough, great. Otherwise, buyer beware!

    John Updike

    John Updike

This episode is mostly about the writer John Updike. We hear Updike read from several of his short stories, the foreword to The Early Stories, and we hear him speak with Charlie Rose on two different occasions. Updike was an accomplished novelist, poet, critic, artist, and family man. But what can he tell us about the need for art in life?

Goodbye To Berlin with Allison Vincent

Goodbye To Berlin with Allison Vincent

Seriously, though. How DO we thread together all of our queer identities?

Our guest is writer, educator, and theater maker Allison Vincent and we talk about the queer book that saved her life: the novella Goodbye to Berlin by Christopher Isherwood.

Goodbye to Berlin is a Queer classic. Our hero moves to Berlin where he meets the incomparable Sally Bowles. They become roommates as he explores Berlin and his sexuality. The novella was adapted into the award-winning theatrical production and film Cabaret.

For Allison, it not only saved her in writing her college thesis, but it also provided visibility to her as a Queer woman to see herself represented in history. We dive into all the queer meanings of the novella's most famous line: "I am a camera with a shutter open, quite passive, recording, not thinking" and threading together all of our different identities.
