    Ike Reilly

    Ike Reilly

Ike Reilly is a musician, bard, traveling minstrel, and truth teller from Libertyville, IL. His mien is as much Carl Sandburg and Studs Terkel as it is Willie Nile and Chuck Prophet.

His music both “solo” and with “The Ike Reilly Assassination” is a combination of wry wit, observation and a punk rock ethos bequeathed to him by his hero Joe Strummer of The Clash.

We can’t thank Ike enough for coming on the show - he’s a real mensch, and this episode premiering one week after we welcomed the former Governor of Alabama really exemplifies what we want the show to be about - powerful stories about real people from diverse walks of life, No Cap.

His new album Because The Angels drops in digital and on vinyl later this fall. The singles "Racquel Blue" and "Trick of the Light" are up at Spotify or wherever you stream music.

He performs regularly with his Family Band on The Ike Reilly Quarantine Hour and is on tour throughout the Midwest this fall.

Stay updated and check out Ike's music on, Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, Spotify, Apple MusicYoutube

Stay updated with his tour dates at IkeReilly.com/tour and if he comes to your town, by all means get off your couch and go see him.

Greg Bluestein: AJC Reporter & All Around Mensch

Greg Bluestein: AJC Reporter & All Around Mensch

Greg Bluestein is a political reporter who covers the governors’ office and state politics, and contributes to The Political Insider blog for The Atlanta Journal-Constitution’s. Before working for the AJC, he was an AP Reporter based in Atlanta for 7 years. At The University of Georgia, he was the Editor in Chief of The Red and Black.

Greg Bluestein represents a little bit of The Road Not Traveled for both of your intrepid hosts, but more so for The Chairman.

As we discuss in the episode, both Dave and Greg possess degrees  in Journalism from The Henry W. Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communications at The University of Georgia.  They also both have an emphasis via said degree in “Newspapers.”

Chris and Dave met on the staff of The McIntosh Trail newspaper in high school. Greg and Chris both have degrees in Political Science. Ironies abound.

Dave is a political consultant of some renown, Chris runs a successful on-site rental and logistics business, and Greg is a reporter – albeit one who hasn’t picked up a pica stick, or had to read a story over the line in a phone booth to get it in for the evening edition in quite some time.

So the next time someone gets on their high horse about “Liberal Arts Degrees” not preparing students for “Real World Jobs” you can point them our way.

We are also all Sons of The South, though the term has undergone a change in meaning in recent years, graduates of The University of Georgia, passionate about the politics and the media of our changing region, and about the success and failure of our schools’ football team. (TYLER SIMMONS WAS ONSIDES).

Greg’s a tremendous guest, a go to for reporters and others who want to grok Georgia’s changing politics, and an all around mensch!

#76: Holiday Tales, Homecomings And Beach Cops

#76: Holiday Tales, Homecomings And Beach Cops
I'm on the road recording from my bedroom in Birr, Co. Offaly, which turns out to be more difficult than usual. I'm also fresh from a first family holiday with Cara and Luke where we encountered a busybody, some boat wankers and also some lovely times. I get a little bit political talking about covid fatigue as I return to stand up and there's the latest episode of Baby Detective. Enjoy!

    Gabriel Sterling

    Gabriel Sterling

Gabe Sterling is a Damn Good Dawg. Some folks in the UGA diaspora shy away from that appellation, but in this case it is the truth. He represents The University of Georgia and The Pillars of The Arch as well as nearly anybody in the public eye – and certainly better than some of the elected officials who claim to be part of Dawg Nation.

Of course he’s much more than that – Young Republican Extraordinaire, Political Consultant in his own right, former elected official, candidate for office, and spokesperson for Georgia’s Secretary of State in a maelstrom created by the President of the party he’s worked most of his adult life to build and maintain in Georgia.

When that whole controversy was at it’s height – when Gabe was telling President Donald Trump to “Cut it out before somebody gets injured or killed” a lot of people would ask Dave what he knew about Gabe:

“Gabe Sterling is the type of guy you make the banker when you play Monopoly – because unlike the vast majority of people you know – he’s not going to cheat and slide money out of the till when you’re not looking.” In other words, he’s the type of umpire you want calling balls and strikes when everything is on the line." (The anti-Eric Gregg if you will?)

Most importantly, maybe, Gabe,  like your erstwhile co- host The Chairman has said “Go Dawgs!” on CNN. As the man says “it’s the little things.”

    Carter King From Futurebirds

    Carter King From Futurebirds

Carter King from America’s Favorite Cosmic Space Country Band Futurebirds joins us today to talk about inspiration, band dynamics, pandemic plans, and whether Dave can manifest a tour with Futurebirds and King Gizzard and The Lizard Wizard using only his mind?

Futurebirds have been building up their fanbase, touring the country, and putting out records for over 10 years now, and always feel like they’re just on the cusp on becoming a household name. With three strong songwriters, and a sound that’s an amalgam of many things but doesn’t hew to just being one thing, they can be a tough act to subscribe. But since the pandemic is over for you bitches (as long as you got that Vax) you can go and do the one thing that will make you a BirdsHead – go see them live.

The Chairman and CHRID have had the pleasure of seeing them live several times, in several iterations, together and apart – and every time they bring the heat. From Dave’s kids getting onstage at the show at Waverly on Dave’s birthday, to encoring with “Rocks Off” and “Six Days” on the road at the MMFA, going to see DBT with their pedal steel player, KIFFY, they’re a fun band and a good hang.

    Bob Shrum Part 2

    Bob Shrum Part 2

Legendary political consultant and Director, The USC Center for The Political Future Bob Shrum keeps walking us through the history he continues to witness.

Last episode, Bob took us from meeting then-Senator John F. Kennedy as a high school student volunteer for the 1960 Democratic National Convention, on up to hiding below the stage to make sure the TelePrompTer didn’t fail during Senator Ted Kennedy’s concession/retrenchment-as-elder-statesman “The Dream Will Never Die” speech at the 1980 Democratic Convention.

In Part Two, we talk about Ted Kennedy’s loyalty and how it manifested itself in the “veterans” of his office always coming to his aid, a vast swath of Governors, Senators, Mayors and other elected officials, Bob’s lowkey place in the pantheon of American gourmands, the continued need for good creative to do persuasion, and his deep and abiding love and admiration for his amazing wife Mary Louise Oates aka “Oatsie” – and her work in opening a homeless shelter in LA leads us back to that most southern thing of all: Football. It Just Means More!

Dave does one of his favorite things, and invites a famous and accomplished guest to come visit him in Alabama, with the promise of a dinner at a Frank Stitt restaurant. This will continue to be a bug, until someone takes him up on it, when it will become a feature.

Quarterback Controversy At The University of America

This week we talk about the ongoing post election kerfuffle. Dave gives us some personal insight on vote counts and recounts, and we ponder if any of this really means anything in the end. Then, with Steve Covid laying waste to much of the college football slate this weekend, we turn our eyes to Augusta and wonder if The Masters should be nationalized.
