5G Factor: New Device Capabilities Pushing 5G Boundaries

An Assessment of Key 5G Ecosystem Developments Including the Google Pixel 8 Launch, Intel Enters the AI PC Race, and the 5G Americas Forum and NTN Updates

In this episode of The 5G Factor, our series that focuses on all things 5G, the IoT, and the ecosystem implications, I’m joined by my colleague and fellow analyst, Olivier Blanchard, for a look at the top 5G developments and what’s going on that caught our eye.

    Our conversation focused on:

T-Mobile is Offering Free Google Pixel 8 Products. Google Pixel 8, Pixel 8 Pro and Pixel Watch 2 are now available on the T-Mobile network as T-Mobile is taking orders online and in stores. We evaluate the market impact of T-Mobile promoting the performance gains that Google’s new devices can attain through T-Mobile's 5G standalone four-carrier aggregation capabilities. Plus, we review some basic specs and the capabilities of the new Google Pixel products in comparison to alternative smartphones and smartwatches.

Intel Enters AI PC Race with NPU-powered Core Ultra Processor. Intel unveiled an array of technologies to bring AI everywhere and make it more accessible across all workloads, from client and edge to network and cloud, at its third annual Innovation event. Intel seeks to foment the new AI PC experience through its upcoming Intel Core Ultra processors (available December 14), code-named Meteor Lake, featuring Intel’s first integrated neural processing unit (NPU) for power-efficient AI acceleration and local inference on the PC. We examine the impact of the launch including use of the Intel 4 process technology in helping to deliver significant power-efficient performance improvements and bringing discrete-level graphics performance with onboard Intel Arc graphics.

5G Americas Industry Analyst Forum. 5G Americas recently hosted its Industry Analyst Forum in Dallas. The event is an opportunity to meet with its 17 member companies to discuss relevant current and upcoming technical advancements as well as participate in a variety of small roundtables discussions with member company subject matter experts. We look at key takeaways including how mobile devices have become integral to all society rendering spectrum as the new oil, identifying the enterprise vertical use cases that are generating revenue today, and new insights on non-terrestrial network (NTN) technology and capabilities.

S3E7 - A path to the Darkside - Morgan tries NTN

S3E7 - A path to the Darkside - Morgan tries NTN

It was a matter of time before one of us caved to the powerful temptations of NTN. Just like Abu was drawn to the forbidden treasures inside the cave of wonders, Morgan was drawn to the shine of a pair of crispi evos sitting high on a shelf in a local ski store. The world around us hasn't imploded since he first laid his hands upon them and we can safely say that smiles were evident when he stepped in for the first time. In this episode, Lucas joins us to break down Morgans first day on NTN. Was it any different from 75mm? It is actually any better? What the hell is a duck-butt grabber? Will Morgan use ski 75mm again? These questions, and many more, will be answered.

We also discuss a hot topic in the Bogong Bullitin about the proposed changes to the XC network at Falls Creek. Are chook-footers really tying themselves to dozers to save the network? Tune in to find out!

E 16 NTN's Charles Harris on Developing Strong Leaders

E 16 NTN's Charles Harris on Developing Strong Leaders
A native of “Honeymoon City” Niagara Falls, New York, Charles Harris began his aftermarket career after graduating with degrees in both Business and Marketing from Northwood University in Midland, Michigan. An experienced sales executive, Harris has spent more than 30 years in the automotive aftermarket, holding executive management roles at such well-known names as Tenneco, Monroe, TMD Friction and ASC Airtex before joining NTN.

Harris joined NTN in 2019 as the director of sales – Automotive Aftermarket and in October 2021 was promoted to vice president of sales and marketing. In his tenure with NTN, he has overseen the restructuring of the automotive aftermarket sales team and the growth of NTN’s market share in the traditional automotive aftermarket, heavy-duty, and fleet market channels.

Throughout his career, Charles has focused on the value of people and developing their ability to communicate and execute, which generates organizational growth. In the podcast, Harris shares that his work with his team is his proudest accomplishment: “I think my proudest achievement has to do with my people and the teams that I’ve built. When I look back now on some of the people and how they excelled under my leadership in the business – not only becoming just regional managers, being sales directors, being VPs within the industry – that that’s what makes me most proud.”

In this exclusive AMN Drivetime interview, Babcox Media CEO Bill Babcox sits down with Harris to learn more about what makes a great salesperson successful today, how to stay ahead of the curve, where Charles gets his motivation and more.

In this episode, Bill and Charles talk about:

1:52 What makes a great salesman in the aftermarket today?

2:48 Most memorable story from early days on the road

5:25: How to stay ahead of the curve in today’s fast-evolving industry

6:30: Proudest moments in Charles’ career

8:38 A closer look at the NTN Sales & Marketing team

10:04 What motivates Charles to stay focused (spoiler alert: It’s his grandkids!)

    11:05 Drivetime’s new Lightning Round!

E7: Shock Absorbers and Sales, Industry Expertise with Kevin Judge

E7: Shock Absorbers and Sales, Industry Expertise with Kevin Judge
Kevin Judge, Vice President of Sales and Marketing at NTN Bearing, started his journey in the industry without even knowing what a shock absorber was. With the help of his mentors and connections within the industry, Judge was able to work his way up and gain experience that he can now share with young professionals. In episode 6 of the AMN Drivetime Podcast with Bill Babcox, Judge shares this industry advice and the lessons he has learned from his early mentors that he carries with him in his current role.

    #24 - Telemark Colorado

    #24 - Telemark Colorado

I first got wind of the Telemark Colorado guys a few years back when I started seeing some meetups and some edits go up online. Colorado has always been a strong hold of Telemark Skiers from the early days until now. I’ve worked with these guys on some T-shirt collaborations over the past few seasons for Freeheel Life and we helped support the king of the heel video competition this season… and I’m just super psyched on the style and energy that they are bringing to our Telemark community right now and wanted to find out more about how the whole thing started.

    From Telemark Colorado's Website :

Telemark Colorado was put together to serve as the Apres ski bar for our niche knee dropping community. To indulge in the turn, indulge in the gear, maybe have a beer or two, and probably crack some jokes.

So for those who want to believe telemark is dead, let them think that. And for us, we can celebrate the aspects of telemark that brings us together and coming back for more. Let’s all keep our knees to the ground and our beers to the face! Welcome to Telemark Colorado.

#23 - 10 Key Words & Phrases for Every Beginner Telemark Skier

#23 - 10 Key Words & Phrases for Every Beginner Telemark Skier

The reason I wanted to do this podcast was to have at least one documented place where a newbie could find some answers to what is being spoken about.  This podcast has helped me realize how often beginners are left out of the conversation because of verbiage and slang. So this one is for you. And if you’re an old crusty — you might find something useful too. Who knows!

So these are my TOP TEN THINGS I think every Telemark skier should have in their vocabulary to help them navigate a conversation with a more veteran Telemark skier:

    1. PINHEAD
    2. 75MM
    3. BELLOWS
    4. BINDING TYPES
    5. LEAD CHANGE
    6. HEEL THROW
    7. ACTIVE BINDING / NEUTRAL BINDING
    8. LURK
    9. CHORD CENTER
    10. NTN

    #4 - 75mm VS. NTN Telemark Boots & Bindings

    #4 - 75mm VS. NTN Telemark Boots & Bindings

It's war and madness! The NTN army is crushing the beloved 75mm tribe...or so everyone is saying. This week Josh rolls solo to explain the difference between the 75mm Nordic Norm and the newer NTN boot and binding platform. Why does it even matter? Is NTN really the future? Are there even boots that will work for me? He answers all of these questions and more.
