Mother Pearl and the Nuclear Disaster (Sci-Fi Horror) - Story #16

Mother Pearl and the Nuclear Disaster (Sci-Fi Horror) - Story #16

A love letter to Gojira, a post-Cold War parable, a tale of confinement, escape, and approaching catastrophe. Mother Pearl and the Nuclear Disaster is all of these things and more. It is the story of a child born into nuclear winter, a community obsessed with a giant pearl, a president with a woefully short memory, and a world entirely unprepared for the end. "Gather, my neighbours, and rejoice; fear not the night that lasts the day, for Mother Pearl shall be our guiding light, our torch in darkest need!"

EPISODE 14: 2011 TŌHOKU EARTHQUAKE AND TSUNAMI, JAPAN

EPISODE 14: 2011 TŌHOKU EARTHQUAKE AND TSUNAMI, JAPAN

Listen in to this EXTREME tale of bravery from 9/11 hero and world traveller, David T. Garrison!

How would you spend time off work? Relaxing? Visiting family and friends? David T. Garrison did the exact opposite and went out to help in one of the most devastating earthquakes and tsunamis to hit Japan.  You can’t get a more extreme holiday than this!

On 11th March 2011, a 9.1 magnitude earthquake hit just off the coast of Japan followed by a tsunami that decimated 400 miles of east coastline and severely damaged the Fukushima nuclear power plant, north of Tokyo.  As hundreds of thousands of citizens fled the area and ex-pats were told to leave Japan due to the risk of a nuclear catastrophe, David T. Garrison did an incredibly brave thing - boarded a flight from The States to Japan and went to assist those in need.  Partially raised in Japan, David discusses what it was like to go back to the country he fell in love with as a child, the magnitude of the disaster and the work he undertook and strategies he employed in providing relief.  We also discuss the risks he faced from radiation poisoning, trauma, PSTD and the other rescue missions he has worked on including 9/11.  David also reveals his famous ancestor!

David was born in Wilmington NC USA. Part of his childhood was spent in Japan.  At the age of 18 he became an Emergency Medical Technician and then worked in sector including Rescue/Fire, Home Care and Clinical Hospital setting for close to 30 years. He joined the American Red Cross in 2007 and has worked on Disasters in 14 US States including Hurricane Harvey in Texas, the California for Wildfires, and for Hurricane Maria in Costa Rica and 9/11.  You can find him on Facebook at: https://www.facebook.com/david.t.garrison.9

    Saving Fukushima

    Saving Fukushima

On March 11, 2011 Japan was struck by a 9.1-magnitude earthquake, the most powerful in the country's recorded history. But the real horror had only just begun. A 14-meter-high tsunami created by the seismic event followed, sending giant waves of seawater crashing into the the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant, triggering a nuclear disaster. While the world watched in horror, the responsibility of containing the disaster fell on workers who had to risk their lives to salvage the plant -- and protect the planet. In this episode of Teamistry, host Gabriela Cowperthwaite takes us through the harrowing experience that no amount of training could've prepared the team for. Former plant superintendent Atsufumi Yoshizawa describes the scenes from the frontlines and how a method called "Resilience Engineering" helped his team prevent total meltdown. You'll also hear from operations manager Akira Hogyuko as he talks about how trust between team members and seniors helped them navigate the disaster. Plus Lake Barrett, a retired nuclear engineer and consultant on the clean-up effort, helps explain the major events that unfolded in those frightful moments.

Teamistry is an original podcast from Atlassian. For more on the series, go to www.atlassian.com/podcast.

    Fukushima Daiichi

    Fukushima Daiichi

The Tohoku earthquake and tsunami brought unspeakable devastation to Japan, but they were only part of the story. A third disaster followed when the first two cut off power to one of the world's largest nuclear power plants. Now a race was on to contain the meltdown and save the country.

Drawing heavily from eyewitness accounts, I'll tell the story of the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear accident.

The Reel: Craig Mazin on 'Chernobyl' and the 'Cost of Lies'

The Reel: Craig Mazin on 'Chernobyl' and the 'Cost of Lies'

From the very first line of dialogue, Craig Mazin makes clear that “Chernobyl” is far more than a dramatization of the 1986 nuclear meltdown in the USSR.

Mazin, the creator and writer of the HBO miniseries, tells a story of the “cost of lies” and the real-life dangers that result from a culture disconnected from the truth. The Soviet system was built on propaganda and misinformation, and the heroes of the nuclear disaster are the people who sought the truth and stuck to the facts — even at great personal cost.

As he developed the story in 2016, Mazin saw parallels in American politics, with whole segments of the public growing untethered from the truth.

The five-part series resonated with viewers, and has drawn the largest audience for an HBO miniseries since “Band of Brothers.” It’s been nominated for 19 Emmys.

Mark Olsen (@IndieFocus) talks with Mazin (@clmazin) about how the medium of episodic television gave him the space to tell a mystery — as well as a story of a culture, a system of government, and the nature of love.

    Chernobyl Part Two

    Chernobyl Part Two

The people of Pripyat knew something had happened at the nearby power plant - but they only realised how serious it was two days later, when they were ordered to evacuate the city.

Drawing on accounts from eyewitnesses and survivors, as well as contemporary news reports and expert assessments, I'll tell the full story of the horrifying Chernobyl disaster.

This is the second of two episodes on this topic.

    Chernobyl Part One

In April 1986, power plant operators prepared to carry out a planned test which would take less than a minute. Instead, they triggered a disaster with consequences that would last for thousands of years.

Drawing on accounts from eyewitnesses and survivors, as well as contemporary news reports and expert assessments, I'll tell the full story of the horrifying Chernobyl disaster.
