    ABOUT THE GUEST

    Dr. Carney is Associate Dean for Public Health and Health Policy, and Professor of Medicine, at the Larner College of Medicine at the University of Vermont (UVM). She earned an AB from Middlebury College, MD from the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine, and a Master of Public Health (MPH) from the Harvard School of Public Health. She previously served as Vermont’s Commissioner of Health under three gubernatorial administrations. In this role, she developed and implemented Vermont’s first outcome-based approach to improving public health, modeled on the national Healthy People initiative, combining clinical and community-based prevention. 

    At the University of Vermont, Dr. Carney developed and directed the graduate public health programs at the Larner College of Medicine, including a Master of Public Health and a new concentration in Global Health Leadership. She is the author of 3 public health textbooks, including Controversies in Public Health & Health Policy, and the most recent, A History of Public Health: From Past to Present. Dr. Carney’s areas of research expertise include building and sustaining community-academic partnerships, translational research, and reducing disparities in rural areas. She is a member of the Association of Schools and Programs in Public Health and serves as a member of the Board of Regents of the American College of Physicians.

    Jorge graduated in August 2018 with his BSN and ICU and ER throughout his career. He started travel nursing in October of 2020 and has completed ICU contracts in Atlanta, Houston, The Woodlands, Tampa, and Las Cruces. Jorge just recently accepted a position as a flight nurse and will be starting later this month. Jorge has a love for critical care nursing, going to the gym, and investing in real estate.

    E74: InvisiYouth Chat Sessions with the founder and board president of Operation Happy Nurse, Shannon McPeek and Mallori Walker

    We LOVE nurses, and they are a fundamental part of the lives of teens/young adults living with chronic illness/disability. So having a nurses where we get to chat with nurses, talk about improving their mental health wellbeing, and getting to connect better in our visits is a goal! We have two incredible podcast guests that took their experience as nurses and amplified it to empower and help others. Both from the nonprofit, Operation Happy Nurse, founder Shannon McPeek and board president Mallori Walker, have the aim of helping those in the nursing profession battle work-related stress, anxiety and depression and end the stigma around mental health. And it’s been a rockstar-level of success ever since!

    Here’s the Four Hot Takeaways from this podcast episode: 

    1. At 4:23, Shannon and Mallori answer a rapid-fire of questions about how they got into nursing, why the origin story of OHN’s name would make all the sibling energy proud, and each of their favorite resources that the nonprofit provides. 
    2. At 15:20 we dive deep into the origin story about how Shannon created Operation Happy Nurse, Mallori gives the facts on what can be the pitfalls of working in nursing and mental health, and how to provide self-care and wellbeing into nurse’s lives on and off the clock.

    Brittany Roberts is currently a professor in a BSN program. After graduating from JMU with her BSN, she worked on a step-down unit for a few years before going into the ICU realm. She has worked in a coronary care unit, cardiac cath lab, and Cardiac Surgery ICU. During the pandemic, the CSICU doubled as a COVID-ICU as well. While working at the bedside, she discovered a love of teaching both new grad nurses and students. She pursued an MSN in Nursing Education from Duke University so she could further explore this passion for education and help usher in the next generation of nurses.
