Student Activism & the Threat of Politicisation | The London Circle

Student Activism & the Threat of Politicisation | The London Circle

    | The London Circle | 14 June 2023

The legacy of student campaigning in the UK is nothing short of fantastic, with students constantly campaigning against the ruling establishment in the UK and across the world.

However, things have changed with the politicization of this crucial arena of civic manifestation, and have reduced it to a shadow of its former self.

British students have always campaigned for justice, whether it be within the UK or anywhere else across the world. To note but one example, the NUS’ historic stand against Apartheid in South Africa was one of the most powerful tools of bringing down that regime.

However, today student activism resembles a shadow of its former glorious self, with utterances, statements and political and ideological opinions being combed through meticulously and students being punished for something they said years and years ago when they were students. Indeed, students winning elections are being sacked for statements they made when they were minors and threatened with their future careers.

Anas Altikriti discusses with Shaima Dallali and Lubaba Khalid the state of UK student activism, its achievmentds and the conditions that are now set to stifle its ability to freely express any stand on controversial issues.

    Ep 15- Student costs

    Ep 15- Student costs

The cost-of-living crisis is probably worse for students trying to survive at university.  It is not surprising that some 80% have a job alongside their studies as the maintenance loans have not kept pace with inflation.  They were increased by 2.36% this year when inflation is in double figures.  The maximum that they can receive is £12,667 in London and that has to cover their accommodation, food, travel, books, phone contracts and maybe some socialising.  And that is only paid if their parents' household income is below £25,000.
Most parents are expected to contribute to their students' living costs, paying up to £500 a month .  The big problem is that most middle-class parents do not have £6,000 a year of taxed income spare.
In addition they may not realise how much the government expects them to pay towards their child's university costs.
Students therefore need to make savings where they can and earn.  Mrs Mean has plenty of tips.
