Ep. 217: Raiding The Progressive Rock Crypt - 80's Neo-Prog

This week get your nerd on with us as we are raiding the Prog Rock crypt again. However, this will be a much different journey into the world of progressiveness, as we are covering Neo-Prog from the early to mid-1980s. A much different time for progressive rock, as these bands were influenced by more than just Genesis, Yes, and King Crimson. These groups were injecting heavy doses of hard rock, new wave, punk, and pop into their progressive Day-Glo soup! Keep an open mind and give it a listen…

What’s this InObscuria thing? We’re a podcast that exhumes obscure Rock n' Punk n' Metal and puts them in one of 3 categories: the Lost, the Forgotten, or the Should Have Beens. Prog rock in the 60s and 70s initially had mostly classical music and jazz influences, but over the last 40 years it has come to include other fusions of music styles including metal, punk, funk, folk, and electronic. From Zappa and Sgt. Pepper to the 1980s music by bands like Marillion and Pendragon… This is Neo-Prog Rock! Get yer nerd on!

    Songs this week include:

    1. Saga – “Wind Him Up” from Worlds Apart (1981)
    2. Twelfth Night – “East Of Eden” from Smiling At Grief (1982)
    3. IQ – “The Wake” from The Wake (1985)
    4. Pendragon – “Fly High Fall Far” from The Jewel (1985)
    5. Gowan – “Keep Up The Fight” from Gowan (1982)
    6. It Bites – “All In Red” from The Big Lad In The Windmill (1986)

Episode #163 - Ireland Tour 2023 - False Starts and Secret Bar Shows

Episode #163 - Ireland Tour 2023 - False Starts and Secret Bar Shows

Following the Japan tour in spring 2023, Night Demon traveled to the UK for a run of UK / Ireland shows that was planned to commence with an appearance at the Dominion Festival in Newcastle.  Unfortunately, that festival was canceled on very short notice, leaving the band in limbo for a few days.  In this week's episode, you will hear how they spent that time.  The centerpiece was an off-the-cuff covers gig at an open mike night at a blues bar in Newcastle.  The episode includes audio of this entire performance, including a Jarvis collaboration with Russ Tippins from Satan. Night Demon then traveled to their home base in Derry, Northern Ireland, for a couple days of downtime.  The guys describe their philosophies on how to spend time off on the road.  Also, Jarvis explains why in a very real way Northern Ireland is home.

    Welcome to Hell

    Welcome to Hell

In this episode we dive into the story behind the debut album by the New Wave of British Heavy Metal’s Schizoid Sons of Satan themselves Venom.

‘…a band that was heavier and more over the top than anything anyone had ever seen or heard before, more Satanic than Black Sabbath, louder than Motörhead, with a pyrotechnic show to rival Kiss, and with even more leather and studs than Judas Priest, the ultimate ingredients for the Ultimate Metal Band.’

Venom never compromised. Venom played up the Satanic angle and never apologized. They cut their own path and by doing so spawned not just one genre but multiple genres. Heavy music in the 21st century is different if Venom didn’t happen. The blueprint this band would follow to the legendary status of metal immortals is all right here on Welcome to Hell. Not many bands can say that about their debut album.

Featuring mentions of, Mantas, Abbadon, Judas Priest, Guillotine, Newcastle, Cronos, Alan Winston, Impulse Studios, Neat Records, Katriona Gilmour, Leeds Music Scene, Marshall amps, Geoff Barnes, Jesus Christ, Steve Thompson, Baphomet, METALLICA, Hammersmith Odeon, Rolling Stone, Norwegian Black Metal

Ep. 180: Excavation: New Wave Of "Not So" British Heavy Metal - Part III

Ep. 180: Excavation: New Wave Of "Not So" British Heavy Metal - Part III

This week the lads hop across the pond to do some more excavation of denim and leather… Well, sort of… While it’s sort of about the New Wave Of British Heavy Metal, we instead visit France, USA, Canada, Japan, and Germany! The NWOBM movement was filled with passionate bands from Great Britain that were poised to take over the world. Most of the A-listers like: Iron Maiden, Saxon, and Def Leppard went on to major success, but bands from around the globe were inspired and aspired to carry the torch of heavy metal in the early 80s. Hopefully, we can help spread the word and sounds for those that didn’t quite make it to the same level.

What’s this InObscuria thing? We’re a podcast that exhumes obscure Rock n' Punk n' Metal and puts them in one of 3 categories: the Lost, the Forgotten, or the Should Have Beens. This week we discuss the LOST. From the music, to the fashion, to the attitude… 40-years ago these bands started an underground movement that would change hard rock and metal globally forever.

    Songs this week include:

    1. Riot – “Hard Lovin’ Man” from Restless Breed (1982)
    2. Trust – “In The Name Of The Race” from Repression (1980)
    3. Loudness – “Loudness” from The Birthday Eve (1981)
    4. Manilla Road – “Far Side Of The Sun” from Metal (1982)
    5. Exciter – “Heavy Metal Maniac” from Heavy Metal Maniac (1983)
    6. Grave Digger – “Heavy Metal Breakdown” from Heavy Metal Breakdown (1984)
    7. Cirith Ungol – “Frost And Fire” from Frost And Fire (1981)
