Actor Michelle Langstone's tips for visiting the magnificence of Milford Sound

Actor Michelle Langstone's tips for visiting the magnificence of Milford Sound
"I came back to Milford Sound because I couldn't get the shape of the landscape out of my head; those glacier-carved mountains plunging toward deep green water, the lichen and moss hugging the faces of giants who seemed to lean in and admire their faces in the deep stillness."

Actor and writer Michelle Langstone is rarely lost for words - except when she tries to describe the beauty of Milford Sound.

In this episode of our Trip Notes travel podcast, NZ Herald Travel Editor Stephanie Holmes and writer Juliette Sivertsen talk to Michelle about travel to Fiordland and the magic of Milford Sound.

They also discuss boating holidays in New Zealand and abroad, and their favourite memories of being out on the water.

The episode is inspired by Michelle's article 'Sounds of Silence, which you can read here:

Rarotonga travel: The legends of the Shipwreck Hut

Chef Gareth Stewart on how to beat food FOMO, and the best things to see - and eat - in England

Chef Gareth Stewart on how to beat food FOMO, and the best things to see - and eat - in England
Each episode, Trip Notes hosts Stephanie Holmes and Tim Roxborogh are joined by a special guest to talk all about travel. On this episode, brought to you by House of Travel, we chat with Gareth Stewart.

As executive chef for the Nourish Group, British expat Gareth Stewart knows a thing or two about food. So there was no better candidate to be our guest on a special food-themed episode.

Stewart has most recently created the excellent menu for Nourish’s new gastropub venture The Brit, but when he’s not busy there — or at one of the group’s other 12 restaurants (Euro, Andiamo, Jervois Steak House and more) — he is also an avid traveller. And he has a theory about why some of our favourite travel memories involve food.

He also tells us how to beat food FOMO when travelling (trust us, it's a real problem), and we talk about the best things to see - and eat - in England.

Michael Galvin, why Fiji is off limits, and facing up to failure in London
Each fortnight, Trip Notes hosts Stephanie Holmes and Tim Roxborogh are joined by a special guest to talk all about travel. On this episode, we chat with Michael Galvin.

He's known and loved in New Zealand for playing Dr Chris Warner in the country's longest-running soap opera Shortland Street, a role he's had since the show started in 1994... apart from a four year break early on.

He left the show in 1996 and moved to London, but his dreams of finding fame and fortune there didn't quite work out. In a refreshingly candid conversation, Michael tells us how it felt to fail and how he's found peace with the decisions he made.

We also talk about Fiji - one of Stephanie and Tim's favourite destinations - but Michael reveals what it's like to visit there when you're the star of the nation's best-loved TV show. Clue: it's crazy.

Stacey Morrison, Magic Mike strip shows, Russian billionaires, and the power of language
Each fortnight, Trip Notes hosts Stephanie Holmes and Tim Roxborogh are joined by a special guest to talk all about travel. On this episode, we talk to Stacey Morrison.

Stacey is quite possibly the busiest woman in New Zealand. Not only does she co-host The Hits Drive Show with Mike Puru, she’s also an ambassador for the New Zealand Breast Cancer Foundation, a best-selling author, a teacher at Massey University, and mum to three children.

And somehow, among all that, she still manages to fit in a healthy love of travel.

From her first overseas trip to Japan as a high school exchange student, to family holidays in Hawaii, to eye-opening trips to Russia, Stacey has loved — and learnt a lot — from seeing the world.

She talks to us about the resilience she needed on her first trip overseas, what makes her a "Macgyver mama", and why she thinks all New Zealanders have a voyager spirit within.

There's also talk of how she enjoyed a Magic Mike strip show in Las Vegas, but Stacey assures us it was only because of "the art"...

Meet the 38-year-old CEO of a $400 million travel company, plus tips for being an ethical traveller

Meet the 38-year-old CEO of a $400 million travel company, plus tips for being an ethical traveller
Each fortnight, Trip Notes hosts Stephanie Holmes and Tim Roxborogh are joined by a special guest to talk all about travel. On this episode, we're joined by James Thornton, CEO of Intrepid Travel, who tells us what it's like to be CEO of a global travel company with an annual revenue now well over $400 million. We also chat about his favourite places to travel, and some issues close to his heart.

Born in the UK, now based in Melbourne, James has been in the hot seat of Intrepid for more than three years, but has been with the company for more than 14. He says he loved travel from an early age and after starting his career path in investment management he realised "making rich people richer" was "a terrible way to exist professionally". He set out to find a job he was passionate about. "I was most definitely not good enough to play football for the England football team, so I pursued an interest in travel."

His first job with Intrepid was as a sales and marketing coordinator, and over the years he's risen through the business, taking on a number of different roles, before becoming the company's first non-founding managing director at the age of 31. Now 38 (he's had a birthday since we recorded this episode!), James is CEO of Intrepid Group.

We talk to James about some of the best places he's travelled - both for work and for pleasure - and the incredible experiences he's had over the years.

We also talk about the concept of "greenwashing" - what is it, why does it matter, and what do we, as consumers, need to be aware of when booking holidays and travel experiences.

Once you've listened, please leave us a review and tell us some of your favourite destinations - we'd love to know where you're travelling, and where you're dreaming of.

Michelle Langstone, tips for group travel, and do you need to be rich to visit Paris?
Each fortnight, Trip Notes hosts Stephanie Holmes and Tim Roxborogh are joined by a special guest to talk all about travel. On this episode, brought to you by Intrepid Travel, we chat to Kiwi actor Michelle Langstone, star of Westside, 800 Words, McLeod's Daughters, The Bad Seed, Go Girls, The Almighty Johnsons and many more.

When we invited Michelle into the studio to talk about the joys of group travel, we weren’t exactly prepared for her response. “I have never, ever, ever done a group trip, and I never, ever will,” she said, vehemently. Listen to find out if we manage to convince her to change her mind.

Michelle also reveals the power of a foreign destination to help heal a broken heart, and admits her first holiday as an adult was a little bit reckless, skipping drama school to go on a tropical holiday with a friend.

And, we pick Paris as our Destination of the Week. What are the best things to see and do there? Why do so many people love it? And do you need to have a lot of money to really enjoy the best of it?

Leave us a review and tell us some of your favourite destinations - we'd love to know where you're travelling, and where you're dreaming of.
