EP56 The Oath and Trust of Commissioned Officers with MX400 with LTC Tom Dull, MAJ(P) Ben Elliott, MAJ Marc Meybaum, and CPT Brian Martinez

This episode features a discussion between LTC Tom Dull, Executive Officer at the Character Integration Advisory Group at West Point, and MAJ(P) Ben Elliott, MAJ Marc Meybaum, and CPT Brian Martinez. They are three officers who have conducted research on the Army profession and are Instructors of MX400: Officership, a class on the oath of office for first class cadets, at West Point.

In this episode, they provide a deep understanding of the oath of commissioned officers by discussing its origin and history, relive stories of their own commissioning ceremonies, and discuss the importance of teaching the value of trust and honor to first class cadets at West Point.

    -----------

    Key Quote

“We want, as officers and we want our officers, to be trustworthy. And that's why I kind of go back to that. You kind of think of everything that goes with that. And that phrase in there says, ‘I will well and faithfully discharge the duties of the office upon which I'm about to do’. Right? And so you can see this establishment of trust, you know, I’m giving my word to the American people, I'm giving my word to the American government that I will be well and faithful, that I will be trusted and categorically trustworthy. And so, I will do that in everything I do and therefore it's unique to what the Academy has. They want officers that live honorably, lead honorably, demonstrate excellence, right? They're trustworthy.” - LTC Tom Dull

    TLJ 5 | 13min devotion for busy leaders | The Lord’s Prayer, pt 5. Deliver Us …

    TLJ 5 | 13min devotion for busy leaders | The Lord’s Prayer, pt 5. Deliver Us …

In this episode, we explore the last of the three “Us’s” in The Lord’s Prayer: “lead us not yield to temptation”.

    We cover:

    • What is temptation
    • Where does temptation come from
    • Who will be tempted
    • What can we do when we face temptation

We reflect on the life of Jesus, how his sacrifice helps us chose the path of life, and practical steps we can take to overcome temptation.

TLJ 4 | 8min devotion for busy leaders | The Lord’s Prayer, pt 4. Forgiveness

TLJ 4 | 8min devotion for busy leaders | The Lord’s Prayer, pt 4. Forgiveness

In this episode, we tackle the topic of forgiveness.

Jesus mentions many different topics and ideas in the Lord’s prayer, and it’s important to recognize that Jesus is focused on the action of prayer and not expounding on the topics included within it.

For that, we will need to read the rest of the gospel of Matthew and follow Christ’s teachings – which we will explore in this episode.

    This episode covers:

    • Receiving forgiveness,
    • Forgiving others,
    • What Jesus taught on forgiveness within the Gospel of Matthew, and
    • How forgiveness works in unhealthy situations.

    TLJ 3 | 6min devotion for busy leaders | The Lord’s Prayer, pt 3. Daily Bread…

    TLJ 3 | 6min devotion for busy leaders | The Lord’s Prayer, pt 3. Daily Bread…

In this episode, we start to explore the first of the three “us’s” in The Lord’s Prayer: “give us our daily bread”.  Set with the Exodus story as its backdrop, this request helps remind us of:

    • We can only collect what God provides.
    • Our dependency on God.
    • God is the ultimate source, provider and sustainer of life.

    TLJ 2 | 7min devotion for busy leaders | The Lord’s Prayer, pt 2. Father…

    TLJ 2 | 7min devotion for busy leaders | The Lord’s Prayer, pt 2. Father…

In this episode, we consider the image of Father in The Lord’s Prayer. The word brings up ideas, images, expectations, feelings, and depending on our own experiences, these feelings might be positive or negative.

    • How do we define father?
    • What is the correct image of Father?
    • What does the idea of Father represent in this prayer?

    TLJ 1 | 5min devotion for busy leaders | The Lord’s Prayer, pt 1. Our…

    TLJ 1 | 5min devotion for busy leaders | The Lord’s Prayer, pt 1. Our…

In this episode, we unpack the first word of The Lord’s Prayer “Our”, consider its implications, and walk through a prayer exercise to put it into practice.

    • In Greek, the ‘our’ is plural, and can be translated literally as ‘the Father of us’, which speaks to the shared and communal bond we all have as humans, that is, we are all made in the image of God. God is literally “our” Father.
    •  When we pray “Our Father”, we are reminded that Jesus didn't intend for us to pray in isolation of others, but instead, pray as someone who acknowledges they are part of a spiritual community.

#8 [Audio Book] The Shape of Calling

#8 [Audio Book] The Shape of Calling

Full Audio Book - The Shape of Calling

    Summary
Calling has become somewhat of a loaded word. For some, it creates a sense of excitement, vision and possibility about their future. For others, calling can be confusing and raise more questions than it answers. It may raise feelings of hurt, anxiety, or disappointment.

Perhaps you’ve wrestled with the way calling has been presented to you in the past? Or, maybe you have received a clear call from God but don’t feel confident about the journey that lies ahead? You may carry a feeling of guilt, wondering if you have missed the opportunity you once saw so clearly?

What if there was a way to explore the mysteries of calling in a life-giving way? What if there was an opportunity to revisit some of the old and narrower definitions of calling, and expand them to capture a fuller sense of God’s intention?

This audiobook has been produced to help navigate you through some of the more nuanced aspects of calling, such as:

    • How do we accurately define calling?
    • Why does the image of God we hold onto, and the metaphors we use when relating to God, have such a profound impact on our choices and sense of freedom?
    • What problems occur when we try and discern a call?
    • Is there a way we resolve an inner tension of not wanting to embrace a call from God?
    • How does calling practically outwork in our lives, and what responsibility must we take to see it come to fruition?
    • The discerning process of testing a call.
