Ep. 545 – Great Lakes Region Habitat and Hunting Update

Ep. 545 – Great Lakes Region Habitat and Hunting Update

Host Chris Jennings is joined by Jay Anglin, Great Lakes Region migration editor for ducks.org, and the two discuss the impacts of the most recent winter storm which barreled into the Great Lakes last week. As the season’s closed across many Great Lakes states, the region remained very mild, leaving ducks and geese to hold tight. The recent winter storm sent them packing from Michigan, Wisconsin, Minnesota, northern Indiana and Illinois. With a quick thaw in the short-term forecast, hunters who hunt in areas where the seasons are still open, may be in for a strong finish.

    10 Rivers for 2023

Every year since 1984, American Rivers has released a report called America's Most Endangered Rivers. To be highlighted by this report, rivers must have significance to human and natural communities, face consequential threat, and have an upcoming major decision that the public can help influence. This episode is an interview with Sinjin Eberle and Amy Souers Kober on what makes this report an effective river conservation tool, the most endangered rivers of 2023, and tangible actions that we as listeners can do to engage with the most endangered rivers of 2023.

How “Dr.” Samuel Bennett Became the 'King of the Thimbles'

How “Dr.” Samuel Bennett Became the 'King of the Thimbles'

You can't talk about confidence artists and their games without talking about one of the classics: the shell game. It's been called a lot of things over the decades, and during the time and place we're going to visit in this episode, it was 'thimblerig'. It's often portrayed as a gambling game, but it's actually a con used to fleece unsuspecting bettors. Samuel Bennett was one of the best-known 'thimbleriggers' – perhaps ever, depending who you ask – and he made a fortune scamming passengers on steamboats along America's waterways in the 19th century.

With big special announcements in the beginning segment, the episode is packed with news segments that are not being spoken about, including the suggestion that Trump might have been a CIA/FBI deep state agent. Dr. Aranda makes comments on Dr. Peter McCullough's recent announcements on spike proteins and at the very end of the episode is a InfoWars special report from Greg Reese on Biden blowing up the Nord Stream 2 Pipeline and the hardcore proof that may just stav off a US war with Russia!

Rediscovering WV's Adena with Darla Spencer

Rediscovering WV's Adena with Darla Spencer

Archaeologist DARLA SPENCER joins us to discuss the Adena peoples utilization of WV's river valleys.  Most researchers avoid/dismiss WV as a significant Adena necropolis, but Darla changes that with the recent publication of her "Woodland Mounds in West Virginia."  There were over 400 mounds in the state, and Darla examines the captivating content of 16 to reveal the growth of pottery making, artistic development and horticulture.  Much of her research centers on the mammoth Grave Creek Mound and the 60 mile long necropolis lining both banks of the Kanawha River to its confluence with the Ohio River.  There is much to reevaluate about WV's role in America's prehistory, and Darla is a leading advocate on this issue.
