The POWER OF POETRY And The BEAUTY OF RHYME | John Milton's Poetry - HC Vol. 4 Ep16

John Milton is most famous for his epic poem "Paradise Lost" but he is also well known for his prose and other poetry that he wrote throughout his life. Sometimes involved in controvery and other times secluded in a hamlet composing verse and rhyme Milton would become one of the greatest writers in English history. He lived in the age of Shakespeare and Francis Bacon and these poetic and chaotic times would provide Milton with the energy and perspective needed to change the course of history in terms of English writing. I hope you enjoy these poems of Milton that were selected to be in the Harvard Classics.

    "Sleepovers" w/ Aparna Nancherla

This week we invite the unironically illustrious Aparna Nancherla on to shift our perspectives on many of the leading issues of the day. Issues like the ethics of reading a popular book years after everyone else, the sadness of European's attachment to their rich historic cultures, and the power structures of the average sleepover. Plus, a heated debate on the merits of warm ice cream causes a great divide. Hope you like conflict!

Choosing Books in a Digital World

Choosing Books in a Digital World
As a listener of BaseCamp Live, you likely recognize the significance of reading in shaping our minds, character, and habits. One of the fundamental pillars of any Classical Christian school is reading books that have withstood the test of time. However, in today's world, where screens dominate our daily lives, the act of picking up a book can feel less intuitive than it did just a few decades ago. This raises important questions: how can we motivate ourselves and our students to read, and how can schools and parents select books for their reading lists, given the limited time available? In this episode, Dr. David Diener returns with insights from C.S. Lewis to help us navigate these challenges.Stay tuned for more enlightening discussions on classical Christian education, and join us next time on BaseCamp Live! CCP16: On the Summer Reading List

CCP16: On the Summer Reading List

In this week's conversation between Dr. James Emery White and co-host Alexis Drye, they take a deeper dive into the 2022 Summer Reading List - an annual Church & Culture blog tradition. Every summer, Dr. White shares the top 10 books that he either has read over the past year or that are at the top of his list to read over the summer. This summer's list was a curveball from the norm, based on questions coming in from the staff at Mecklenburg Community Church about recommended reading for their souls. So this year's list covers some of the classics of Christian devotion, of spiritual formation.

As reading is a passion of Dr. White, he often blogs about books and reading. “Books We Lie About Reading” discusses a BBC survey about the top books people lie to say they have read. In this blog, Dr. White explains the importance of cultivating A Mind for God - the title of a book he wrote that has in the appendix three helpful book lists: 10 books to begin cultivating a mind for God, 25 books for a Christian worldview and a lengthy list of the “great books.” He also wrote a blog titled “Ten Books for Spiritual Growth,” a short entry listing the top 10 books that he recommends for spiritual growth and development.

Toward the end of the discussion, Dr. White mentioned how important he feels it is for churches to develop their own bookstores. He blogged about this topic as well in a blog titled, “The Need for Church Bookstores.”

For those of you who are new to Church & Culture, we'd love to invite you to subscribe (for free of course) to the twice-weekly Church & Culture blog and check out the Daily Headline News - a collection of headlines from around the globe each weekday.

The Joy of Old and Odd Books

The Joy of Old and Odd Books
The Joy of Old and Odd Books; A Letter from the Managing Editor; From Volume CLVIII, Number 2 of Speculative Grammarian, February 2010. — As I was perusing my signed 1355 first edition copy of Jötunn Svartálfar’s Teach Yourself Gothic in Six Score Minutes per Fortnight, I was struck by the stark disparity between my personal and professional collections of books, as compared to the utter disregard for the written word displayed by the general American populace. Old books and odd books, musty treatises and crumbling tomes, flights of fancy and important, eternal ideas fill the bookshelves of my library and inhabit the chambers of my mind. In contrast, the average person—barely deserving of the appellation homo sapiens—cover what shelves they have with worthless gewgaws while their minds echo hollowly with a vapid emptiness.
