    S.5 Ep.1: Putting the Old in Old-Growth

No matter how you define it, old-growth forests are scarce as hen’s teeth in the eastern United States. More than 99% of our forests are second growth. While we can’t speed up time, we can speed up the development of old-growth characteristics through creative silviculture. Join us on this episode of SilviCast as we talk with Paul Catanzaro, Professor and State Extension Forester at the University of Massachusetts - Amherst, about a range of silvicultural techniques to restore old-growth characteristics.

Episode #16: Lori Wostl: Romancing the Trees

Episode #16: Lori Wostl: Romancing the Trees

Artist, writer, teacher and environmentalist Lori Wostl is working on her second trilogy of romance novels on an island just off Puget Sound, a 22-acre property with old-growth cedar and spruce. Lori’s 20-year-old granddaughter and husband are working with Lori to turn the five-bedroom house and grounds into a wedding venue and nature conservancy. Lori hopes to partner with the local university to set up an
    academic research Residency in Forestry.

Lori describes her romance novels as “A few degrees hotter than Nora Roberts and a
few shades less kinky than Christian Gray.” Her first series, published under the pen name Lora D. Roland,  “House of Bliss" (“House of Bliss,” “More Bliss” and “Pure Bliss”) is available on her Website www.LoraDRoland.com, where you can download the free prequel to the series. The books are also available on Kindle Unlimited. Her second
series is called, “Hazy Shades of Time.” (NOT science fiction! Stay tuned.)

Interview | Tree-Sitter Jessica Ostroff on Being Arrested by Helicopter and the Fight to Save the Old-Growth Forests

We spoke with Jessica Ostroff, a tree-sitter involved with the movement to save the last 2.7% of old-growth forests in unceded Pacheedaht and Ditidaht territory on Vancouver Island. Jessica spent eight days suspended around 200 feet off the ground in an ancient cedar tree until Canadian police arrested her from a helicopter. A small group of other tree-sitters were extracted from other locations on the same day. She explains how her team strategically selected the trees to obstruct clear-cut logging and the dangerous manner in which their arrests took place.
