This episode showcases as recent roundtable discussion -- led by WBBM news anchor Rob Hart -- with three hazing experts who share their expertise and thoughts about how and why these practices start, and what red flags parents can keep an eye out for in their own children who participate in groups where hazing could be happening.

Episode 152: Happy New Year's!: 'Hurt' (2021)/'30 Days of Night' (2007)

Episode 152: Happy New Year's!: 'Hurt' (2021)/'30 Days of Night' (2007)

It is the last show of 2021 (or the first one of 2022 depending on when you hear this), and we get back to our horror roots with a double dose of scary fun. 'Hurt' is a slasher that takes place around Halloween. When her husband returns after being deployed, the two look to get their lives back to normal. We also look back on '30 Days of Night' and wonder why it is not talked about more.

We start off with some quick thoughts on the the past year. We talk about the changes we have gone through and what plans we have for the future. SPOILER: None of us are New Year's Resolutions types and planning ahead is not our forte.

Hurt has actually been doing the festival rounds since 2018 before it was finally released this year. We talk about its character driven story, how it subverts expectations with its neat opening fake out, and how well it works as a horror movie. Mixing slashers and mental illness tends to be reductive and almost insulting. Does Hurt manage to make things work?

Vampire movies will always be popular. This week, we talk about 30 Days of Night. We all remember the movie as being pretty popular when it first came out. So, why is it that no one ever talks about it today? Could it be that audiences were not ready for its story? Does it still hold up almost fifteen years later? And why haven't other vampires made this a month long festival?

Episode 151: Christmas Episode: 'The Last Conception'/'The Scary of Sixty-First''

Episode 151: Christmas Episode: 'The Last Conception'/'The Scary of Sixty-First''

It's Christmas time on Adventures in Movies and our gift to you is one of those presents that you look at quizzically with a bemused smile on your face. This week we cover two movies that could not be more different. We look at a light hearted rom-com with strong LGBTQ themes and family values and follow it up with story about one of the most notorious predators of the modern age and loneliness.

We are big fans of The Witch on this show and be extension are fans of director Robert Eggers and Anya Taylor-Joy. We talk about the trailer for the latest collaboration between the two. The Northman has been on our radar for quite a while now and our first look left us with plenty of thoughts. We talk about the action scenes, the inclusion of supernatural elements, and whether men can be too ripped.

This week we review another listener request in The Last Conception. The movie is about a young woman who is coming out to her family. She soon learns just how important carrying on the family bloodline is to them. The plot is a breezy one that has plenty of conflict and no true villain. It has all the elements of a simple and fun movie, but is told in an interesting way that stood out to us.

The Scary of Sixty-First is a horror movie revolving around the crimes of Jeffrey Epstein. Those who say what Epstein did is horrific enough in itself would be right, but this movie takes things to a whole other level. It is a movie that seems to be made for shock value, but also does not want to seem to be care if people understand what it is about. We also talk about how uncomfortable it made us feel and if it is erotic or just plain creepy.

Episode 144: Mysterious Ways Edition: 'Burning'/'The Beta Test'

Episode 144: Mysterious Ways Edition: 'Burning'/'The Beta Test'

After a year of staying as far away from the show as possible, Pablo comes back to talk about two character driven thrillers. We start with a discussion about 2018's Burning from South Korea and close with a talk about this year's The Beta Test. We also talk about another upcoming Stephen King adaptation and have an interview with the Jim Cummings and P.J. McCabe from The Beta Test.

There are just some things we cannot get away from on the show. Another Stephen King adaptation is on the way, and this time Rob Savage is at the helm. We talk about The Boogeyman, whether a short story can effectively be made into a two hour movie, and if a director known for found footage will be able to pull it all off.

Parasite made history at the Academy Awards in 2020. Arguably, the path for its success was paved the year before with Burning. The movie is about a man who runs into a childhood friend. This one chance encounter leads to a carefully laid out mystery, commentary on class, and nuanced storytelling.

Before we talk about The Beta Test , directors, writers, and stars Jim Cummings and P.J. McCabe talk about how they made the movie, what fears they had, and why improvisation does not work for them. It is a great interview that touches on what is wrong with Hollywood and possibly foreshadows the future of moviemaking.

The film itself is a genre mash that includes elements of horror, erotica, comedy, and mystery. It is a modern story that also touches on social media and datamining. But is there too much going on? We talk about the performances, whether the movie is too inside, and the loss of erotica thrillers.

The Changing Landscape of Data Technology with Greg Khairallah, Director, Analytics at Amazon Web Services (AWS)

The Changing Landscape of Data Technology with Greg Khairallah, Director, Analytics at Amazon Web Services (AWS)

When much of the internet is hosted on your servers, the decisions you make really matter. On this episode, Greg Khairallah, Director of Analytics at Amazon Web Services, explains how he thinks about expanding access, maintaining privacy, and the future of the cloud.

    3 Takeaways:

    • Cost is still a barrier for many people when it comes to building and growing internet technology. Greg and his team at AWS have been working hard to expand accessibility when it comes to the cloud for that reason.
    • Innovation should be the center of your decision-making. That often means pushing things forward in unexpected ways.
    • Data governance and data privacy can no longer be ignored or deprioritized but must be taken into consideration by technology leaders.

    Key Quotes:

“Really, what I saw the value in, what attracted me the most, was not just cost savings moving off on-premise to get rid of out of the data center business, though there is some valid economic value to that. But what I saw is that there's just a fundamental way that we could make innovation to be the center of our data decision-making.”

“I've had the honor of meeting customers, not just in North America, but in India and China, in Korea, Australia. And the common patterns around getting value from data and being able to serve their customers better. That is a commonality, regardless of geography or industry."

“I think part of this is this drive to really bring up the standards of interaction across multiple channels, and of course, this is where, data becomes at the heart of it all and the privacy of that data and how the data is used, become top of mind around data governance that we've been working hard at AWS to make that easier for customers of any size to be able to adapt to this new world."

    Bio:

Greg leads the AWS (Amazon Web Services) global business development team for database and analytics. His background includes over 15 years’ experience at Intel, Oracle, and Business Objects (now SAP). A former officer in the US Army, Greg holds a master’s degree in Information System Management from Carnegie Mellon University.

CoverWallet: The industry outsiders making business insurance easy

CoverWallet: The industry outsiders making business insurance easy
Securing an insurance policy that covers your needs is one of the most important items for businesses at all stages, but it’s also one of the most arduous. That’s where CoverWallet comes in. Co-founders Rashmi Melgiri and Inaki Berenguer were looking for an industry that could benefit from moving online when they landed on insurance. Neither had worked in the industry before: both have MBAs from MIT, and Rashmi’s background is in consulting and advertising. But being the outsiders brought certain benefits. First, they could work with multiple insurance carriers to cover as many types of business insurance as possible. Second, instead of standing for the slow-rolling attitude of the established insurance carriers, they offered the instant gratification of on-demand online companies. Listen to Rashmi talk to Scott over the phone at WGN.
