In this episode of the BimTube Podcast we speak with Denise McKenzie. She discussed the importance of openness of data; ethics for digital data use and sharing; the need for good communications and storytelling and making the case of location information.

Denise McKenzie is a strategic advisor, partnership builder and presenter with over 20 years of experience with the global geospatial community. She works internationally to evangelize the benefits, value and application of location data across government, the private sector and academia and her experience covers a broad range of domains including agriculture, defence, sustainability, insurance, Smart Cities & IoT, statistics, development and data ethics. This diversity ensures that she works where geospatial meets mainstream technology.

She co-directed the Benchmark Initiative operating through Ordnance Survey’s Geovation accelerator, exploring the ethical use of location data and it is through this role she became a co-author of the Locus Charter. In the broader geospatial community, she is the Chair-Emeritus of the board of directors for the Association for Geographic Information (AGI) in the UK and remains on the council as the Lead for Ethics. Denise is also a member of the Global Advisory Board for the Location Based Marketing Association and a steering committee member for Women in Geospatial+ leading their Partnership program.

With a broad range of experience in both ethical use of location data, outreach and partnership development, Denise is now the Community & Ethics Partner at PLACE – a non-profit mapping organization founded on the belief that high-quality mapping is essential data infrastructure for the digital age. She leads the development of the global membership and partner program that will utilise the data collected in the PLACE Trust and will continue to promote the uptake and utilisation of the Locus Charter.

Previously, she has worked with the Victorian State Government in Australia on geospatial innovation projects and as the Head of Communication and Outreach at the Open Geospatial Consortium where she led work such as the UN-GGIM Geospatial Standards Guides and strategic partnership engagement.

Denise holds a Bachelor of Arts in Public Policy and Politics from Monash University in Australia and a Masters of Science in Sustainability from the University of Southampton in the United Kingdom.

Con un puñado de pequeños bloques de plástico interconectables como los juegos de Legos podemos construir, desarmar y reconstruir cientos de objetos que la imaginación nos permita. La diversión consiste en usar las fichas de plástico para modelar nuevos objetos, es aburrido llegar a un objeto construido. Mientras más bloques, más posibilidades de crear. Guardando las distancias, eso es “Datos Abiertos”, un conjunto de bloques unitarios de datos que estando aislados representan poca cosa, pero cuya potencialidad reside en que pueden construirse a partir de ellos –y gracias a la visualización de datos– conjuntos de información verdaderamente útiles y a veces inesperados. Los datos son la materia prima de todo “constructor” de datos que pretende justamente construir nuevos componentes de información. Periodistas[1], analistas, desarrolladores, diseñadores son algunos de estos constructores que desde hace pocos años se han volcado a “jugar” con datos crudos; buscan, analizan, seleccionan, y a veces limpian los datos para trabajarlos y presentarlos. Para que los datos realmente sean abiertos es necesario que estén disponibles de forma libre, sin restricciones legales, técnicas o económicas, y que se puedan reutilizar y redistribuir. En el ámbito gubernamental, ejemplos de datos son: lugares turísticos de interés, perfiles de los gobernantes electos, presupuestos, votaciones de leyes en la Asamblea, centros de atención médica pública, escuelas públicas de un país, etc. Si todos esos datos son generados por el gobierno con fondos públicos, ¿a quién le pertenece esos datos? ¿el acceso a esos datos crudos está orientado al gobierno o al ciudadano? Semanas atrás se desarrolló en México dos eventos relacionados con datos abiertos: AbreLatam[2] y ConDatos[3]. Fue una oportunidad para verificar que en América Latina hay un desarrollo creciente de iniciativas públicas y privadas que están liberando los datos. También dentro de este contexto se lanzó Desarrollando América Latina 2014[4] siendo la segunda edición en nuestro país. De esta forma, cada vez más se van creando espacios para que los ciudadanos se “empoderen” de los datos, se apropien, los trabajen y los exploten, logrando una verdadera participación ciudadana no solamente el día de las votaciones, y logrando mayor transparencia en los gobiernos electos.
