    231. Freedom beyond Independence

    231. Freedom beyond Independence

So who really spearheaded India’s Freedom Struggle? Millions of ordinary people-farmers, labourers, homemakers, forest produce gatherers, artisans and others-stood up to the British. People who never went on to be ministers, governors, presidents, or hold other high public office.

They had this in common: their opposition to Empire was uncompromising.

In The Last Heroes, these footsoldiers of Indian freedom tell us their stories. The men, women and children featured in this book are Adivasis, Dalits, OBCs, Brahmins, Muslims, Sikhs and Hindus. They hail from different regions, speak different languages and include atheists and believers, Leftists, Gandhians and Ambedkarites.

The people featured pose the intriguing question: What is freedom? They saw that as going beyond Independence. And almost all of them continued their fight for freedoms long after 1947.

The post-1947 generations need their stories.

To learn what they understood. That freedom and independence are not the same thing. And to learn to make those come together. This episode of BIC Talks is adapted from a conversation between P Sainath and Indu Prasad at Bangalore Literature Festival 2022.

    02 - Tristesse

A 10-year-old Connor acts onstage in a 1985 production of Oliver! and has a seemingly disastrous first television interview. Years later, a 17-year-old Connor stars in a production of Ordinary People across from Emmy-winning actor Jon Hamm (Mad Men, The Town, Baby Driver), who was a senior in college at the time.

Connor and Jon look back on their time working together and recount their highs and lows in various audition rooms.

Plus, a recreation of Connor's Band of Brothers re-audition scene featuring Nicole Drespel (UCB, Broad City, 30 Rock), and a candid conversation about the audition process with a real New York City casting director.

    • See 10-year-old Connor's appearance on KRCG-TV's Showtime.

Ordinary People Doing Extraordinary Things: Making America Safe of Hazardous Substance and Counterfeit Materials

Ordinary People Doing Extraordinary Things: Making America Safe of Hazardous Substance and Counterfeit Materials
Today we introduce two people who have done extraordinary things to protect us from toxic and counterfeit materials. Dennis Bradley will discuss the Hazardous Substance Process Management standard that revolutionized the way industry approaches manufacturing to meet restrictions as mandated by the EU (RoHS) and some US states. He will identify early adopters of the IECQ Hazardous Substance Management Certification and describe the benefits to those companies and their customers. Phil Zulueta, SAE G19 Counterfeit Avoidance Committee Chairman, will explain why these standards and related international certification programs are needed to protect our safety. Phil will discuss the development of the standards and their implementation in the marketplace and the value that the standards and programs provide nationally and internationally. Stan Salot, your host, will explore how these programs are tied together through the US Hazardous Substance Free and Counterfeit Avoidance Mark Alliances.
