    #65 - A real life Farmer - Trav Carter

    #65 - A real life Farmer - Trav Carter
This was a pretty fun one to record and ticked a big bucket list for our show. We talked about visiting the sheep farm of Trav and Millie Carter in Episode 24 - A real life farmer's wife, and in May 2021 - Emma did just that. Listen to excerpts from Emma's visit to the massive 5000 acre sheep farm and Trav the farmer who works the land. There's so much more to farming than many of us think, and these people really need to be a bit of a jack of all trades. There's also a lot of technology now involved - which we got to experience on a real life tractor ride! Shout out to all our fans in Kaniva, Victoria and thank you for listening! It was such a joy to get to experience some of that country hospitality at a local fundraiser and to meet some of the wonderful people Millie had spoken about. It was also so wonderful for Emma to get experience a whole new side of her own country! Make sure to get out and do the same!

#1 Why Farming [Part 1]: A Community Organic Farm Teaching You How to Love Yourself and Your Loved Ones, with Will Chua from FOLO Farms

#1 Why Farming [Part 1]: A Community Organic Farm Teaching You How to Love Yourself and Your Loved Ones, with Will Chua from FOLO Farms
In this episode, I invite FOLO Farm's co-founder Will Chua to talk about how farming and nature teaches us to love ourselves and our loved ones. FOLO Farm is the first social enterprise that I found based in my hometown, Johor, Malaysia. The inspiration of FOLO Farm was origin from Will himself and his friends. It all started when they wondered why they were unhealthy and mentally ill, although they were rich in monetary and had stable jobs. After some research, they found the four root causes: food, environment, community and meanings. Humans in developed and developing countries are losing these elements. Will family and another five families then decided to start to create changes starting from food. Hence, they began to learn to farm and create a healthy environment, community and meanings through farming. Ultimately, to make themselves and others healthy physically and mentally. FOLO Farm gains lots of reputation and attention in Malaysia and also in other countries. Malaysia Global Innovation & Creativity Centre (MaGIC) has also accredited the social enterprise. Together with other co-founders, Will has not stopped learning about farming and the relationship between humans and nature throughout the years. They experiment with various concepts such as agroforest, circular economy and rewilding to recover the destroyed forest and nature in the Johor continuously. Visit [ https://www.folofarms.com/our-story ] if you are interested in FOLO Farm and would like to know more and do more. This is the part one of Will's sharing, and please stay tuned for the second episode to listen to Will's more insightful sharing about farming, nature and love. This is the first episode of my podcast. You could feel my anxiousness with many repeated words and pause. Please forgive me for all the hiccups. I am trying to overcome the challenges. Hope you enjoy this episode as I was during my visit to FOLO Farm and the recording.

Super Size Me 2: Holy Chicken: If you EAT CHICKEN you're gonna want to listen to this!

Super Size Me 2: Holy Chicken: If you EAT CHICKEN you're gonna want to listen to this!

This episode we met up Morgan Spurlock at his pop-up restaurant, Holy Chicken to discuss the newly released Super Size Me 2: Holy Chicken! Morgan is an award-winning and Academy Award-nominated writer, director, producer, playwright and president and founder of full-service New York-based production studio Warrior Poets. Joining us were poultry farmers John Buttram and Charles Morris. Although the start of this documentary is about opening a truly transparent fast-food chicken restaurant, it became quickly apparent that this film is about the farmers, there struggle and the corruption surrounding "big-ag" in our country. 99% of the chicken consumed is the United States is produced by a monopoly of five main companies. These companies control all aspects of chicken production and essentially "own" the farmers who grow their chickens. The whistle-blowing in this documentary has resulted in John has being black-balled the the industry and no longer grows chickens. Charles is still working because he has no choice which is a struggle every day. He currently grows approximately 1.2 million chickens every 8 weeks with a 10% average die-off. Thats an average of 100,000 chickens to compost that he is also responsible for disposing of. Both John, Charles and their families are struggling to survive with a constant barrage of threats from the retaliating industry which includes lobbying group, The National Chicken Council. This film did NOT stop us from eating chicken; in fact, immediately following the episode we ate a spicy, grilled, crispy chicken sandwich which was delicious. Morgan, john & Charles DID open our eyes to the corruption in "big-ag" as well as the struggle our farmers deal with on a daily basis which is carefully and strategically hidden from the average American consumer. We will continue to stay in touch and hope to do a follow-up episode with a more positive change to the industry.
