A conversation with Will Bachman, co-founder of Umbrex

A conversation with Will Bachman, co-founder of Umbrex

Will Bachman is the Co-Founder of Umbrex, the first global community connecting top-tier independent management consultants with one another and matching consultants with clients. Headquartered in New York, the company organizes in-person professional development and social events in major cities as well as an online discussion forum.

Will is the host of the Unleashed podcast, where he explores how to thrive as an independent professional alongside other successful individuals, discussing such topics as raising your visibility, generating and converting leads, building a virtual team, and more.

Prior to establishing Umbrex, Will spent four years as an Engagement Manager at McKinsey & Company and, before that, eight years as a Submarine Officer in the U.S. Navy.

Amanda sits down with Will to discuss how independent consultants can help their clients find work that they love—work that is both fun and through which they can make a real impact. Will shares, through his own career experiences, what he learned about making work feel like play.

Will refers to the Seth Godin quote: “Amateurs do what they love. Professionals love what they do.” He speaks on the importance of “diving into the resistance” that is key to making that transition from amateur to professional.

With the gig economy becoming more prevalent in the wider world of work than ever before, Will believes that the best way for the next generation to find professional success is by taking risks and becoming known for the field they are passionate about as early as possible, starting with content creation (for example, podcasts).

“Find things that you’re good enough at that seem fun,” says Will, “that no one else is doing, and that someone is willing to pay for.”

Interview with Dr. Edy Greenblatt, Resilience expert and CEO of The Restoration Vacation

Interview with Dr. Edy Greenblatt, Resilience expert and CEO of The Restoration Vacation

Edy Greenblatt, CEO of Restoration Vacation, was one of the earliest researchers in the area of resilience. She has a PhD in organizational Behavior from Harvard University, and a masters degree in dance ethnology from UCLA.

Edy’s definition of resilience is the ability to recover from trauma back to normalcy quickly. This means having the physical, emotional and cognitive resources needed, and the psychological, social, and spiritual energy to access to those resources, so that you can do what you want and need to do each day.  To be resilient is to be able to control those resources in order to stay above the burnout line, which is the point below which the normal strategies, the very personal strategies that work for you to be okay, stop working.

If your parents were traumatized, she says,  you have changed mitochondrial DNA—you  have inherited fear and trauma.

The key is knowing the behaviors and conditions that restore you, and those that deplete you. Then managing those restorers and depleters every hour, every day, every week, just like you manage the food you eat, your sleep, and the water you drink.

Organizations, she says, need to train employees how to manage what restores and depletes them. Organization leaders need to put in place the policies, practices, norms, and culture, to create an environment where each aspect of the organization supports resilience. Edy’s company is creating an AI enabled app that actually helps people do these assessments and provides individualized recommendations on how to be more resilient.

Interview with Andy Bass, Author, Start with What Works

Interview with Andy Bass, Author, Start with What Works

Andy Bass, PhD, author of Start with What Works, shares how his early experiences playing in a rock band, skateboarding and teaching  resistant psychology students about artificial intelligence taught him how to learn, and how to teach, and how to engage an audience.

Andy sees an accelerating pace of change in the world. He says that mental agility—the ability to think on your feet and improvise, will be increasingly valuable.  A key skill is understanding what your customers are trying to achieve, and spotting ways to create value for your customers that they may not themselves see.

He shares simple, proven techniques for finding out what’s going right in your business—identifying those core skills and hidden capabilities that can be built upon to create something entirely new. The most powerful tool for consultants is asking the right questions. A good question can open whole new worlds to a client, that may have been hidden in plain sight.

Episode 21: Seeing Through the Bramble of Internal OD Work

Episode 21: Seeing Through the Bramble of Internal OD Work
OD practitioners wear a lot of hats. In this episode, Bob’nJoyce sort through these many hats using the Global OD Model developed by ODN. This model defines the discipline of organizational development and assesses areas for professional development. We discussed: • The multi-faceted work of an OD professional working inside a company and the richness of the work as well as the complexity of the many hats worn when working inside. • The work we have done that fits under each segment of the Global OD Model to show the benefit of having a model that provides grounding for both the OD leader and the company • The benefit of the model to serve as a kind of “you are here” map that helps both the practitioner and the company to understand the work and give context.
