Originals 24 Pharmacy company Merck made their managers thought of ways to let Merck go out of business. Managers had to think of products to put Merck out of the market. This saved Merck. It's called "Kill the Company" exercise. Popović managed the emotion of the crowds at the 2000 Belgrade square. Deep Acting and Surface Acting Deep acting is better than surface acting in that it transfers conflict into positive vector. A stewardess's deep acting will sense the complaining passenger is experiencing stress, anxiety at home. Then the stewardess won't have to deal with all the unpleasantness brought by the passenger. Lewis Pugh listened to music and remembered the jumping out of plane when he was at the army before his last plunge. Pugh was also using deep acting. The Dangers of Venting Martin Luther King Jr. rehearsed all his parishioners against future violence they would encounter on buses. Parishioners were taught when abused, pushed, thrown at, by "white" people, they could "speak" out but not fight with the white. Studies show that venting doesn't help anger. Instead of being angry "with" the target, one should be angry "for" the people that will be hurt by the target. We don't need to punish. We help. Popović led his people's venting into positive action to vote out their dictator. That fall, the dictator lost his election. Four years later, Popović became Serbian president. ------------------------------------------------------------------- E.B. White commented on the New York Times that he found it's difficult to decide whether to change the world for the better or just to enjoy his life. Originals may have to forget his happiness for the time. The journey brings its own happiness.

Originals 23 Strength in Numbers In Serbia, Otpor! mastermind Popović used 4 catches: I'm against the government because I love Serbia. Bite the system. Argue until we win. I am one of the 20,000 leaders of Otpor! They sent Milošević a ticket out of the country and a prison uniform. In Chile, to complain about dictator Pinochet, people turned their lights on and off. People were invited to drive slowly. Taxi drivers slowed down, so did bus drivers. People were walking slowly in the streets. In Poland, people were unhappy about government news on television. They took their television outside and pushed them throught the streets. Group of students learning from Popović sent University president pictures of their shabby meals and invitation cards for the president to invite them all to his house for good meals. The Importance of Now Popović used good timing to remind people to rebel against dictatorship. Telling crowds a hot band was showing up in the 2000 cross-year count down party, Popović announced through microphone in the dark of the counting down that band wasn't coming: "We have nothing to celebrate. This has been a year of war. But it doesn't have to be that way. Let's make the coming year count. Because 2000 is THE year." In order to make things happen, the way you phrase may be of great importance.

Originals 22 People should be optimistic first and then pessimistic. Optimism makes us take the initiative to achieve aims in life. Pessimism makes us think again about all the risks in achieving the thing. When Lewis Pugh hesitated before plunging into North Pole, his friend bade him to consider 3 things: people around you (29 crew coming from 10 different countries) parents who took care of you all your life justification (climate change/global warming) Pugh then plunged himself and finished the swim successfully. Serbian non-violent organization member acting as foreign tourists tour guide successfully taught his audience how to overthrow their dictator. Belgrade: capital city of Serbia The 30some young guide was a Serbian political criminal. He studied well Georgian, Ukrainian, Lebanan and Muldive political ambiance after his imprisonment by authority. Research shows people who had worse bringing up had happier and fuller lives by helping others than those who had better ones. Using Users to Excite Teams Josh Silverman owned Skype in 2008. Josh Silverman meant to expand business. Josh announced Skype would launch computer-to-computer contact soft with full screen video within 8 months. All the employees were dejected. Josh began by telling employees how his own children met with grandfolks thousands of miles away. Then Josh invited users to come up to speak about their own experience with face-to-face full screen video calls. Couples expressed their thanks when they were apart. Military man uttered gratitude how he and his kid opened Christmas gifts at the same time in different countries. Employees were all encouraged by then. Skype 4.0 launched full screen video in December on time. Skype ended up registering 380,000 people daily. MS bought Skype in 8.5 billion 3 years later. Skype revenue increased by 300%.

Originals 21 Working with Emotions This chapter looks at the emotional cost of going against the crowd. Optimism and Pessimism Julie Norem found pessimists did well because of their pessimism. Keep Believing Alison Wood Brooks split students into two groups. One group was asked to say "I am calm" before going on stage to give a 2-minute speech. The other group was to say "I am excited." The "excited" group was scored 17% better and 15% more confident. In a similar test, group that was told "Try to get excited" was 22% better than the group "Try to remain calm." A third experiment was conducted. It was to sing in public. Students were grouped into three. One wasn't asked to say anything. One was to say "I am worried." One was to say "I am excited." The group who said nothing scored 69%. The group who said "worried" scored 53%. The group who said "excited" scored 80%. When we are frightened, it is better to make ourselves excited thqn to try to stay calm.

Originals 20 Think Differently Ray Dalio of Bridgewater Associates managed his employees well. Known as "Steve Jobs" of Investing, Dalio encouraged new employees and old to comment on company's policies. Finding Complainers Most managers say "Don't bring me problems; bring me answers." This is wrong. When you ask your employee to come to meeting full-packed with solutions to the problems of his department, he isn't encouraged to speak our his other ideas and does not learn from other people's problems. Google has a team of "complainers". The engineers at the complainer team need to speak up all the problems they see. Karl Weick: "Argue like you are right; listen like you are wrong." Critical Feedback Tom Gerrity, Index Group, hired an expert to give comments towards him in front of 200 employees. Employees were all encouraged to speak up their real comments. Asking new employees to give comments of the company was the better time than asking those who were leaving the company. Adam Grant was hired once by Goldman Sachs to encourage the best workers to improve their place of work. Movers and Shapers Dalio studied Franklin and Einstein. Dalio resolved those originals he had met into three main traits: Shapers--independent thinkers and rebels who raised a lot of questions; Honest critic--who didn't mind who they were talking to; Not afraid of risks--who were afraid of not succeeding, not afraid of failure

Originals 19 Groupthink Edwin Lan invented Poleroid. Lan was one of Steve Job's heroes. Lan had the second most patents in the US. His light filter is used even in sunglasses and watches. Lan made a mistake by thinking nobody would buy a picture that cannot be printed out. Commitment to Organizations Commitment is the best of the three plans bosses build their organization upon. Employees believe in their organization. Commitment businesses didn't fail even one. Star businesses failed. Expert businesses failed alarmingly. Land himself once worked consecutively for 18 days without even changing his clothing. Poleroid also invented sepia--brown photo. The inventor of sepia didn't even study physics or chemistry. The female art history student was said to have worked in her laboratory for 24 hours without stopping. Howard Rogers was a car mechanic who invented the instant color photography. Problem of Growth Poleroid worked well in the starting of business. As the business got on, the market changed, and the business which didn't change was doomed. Lan wouldn't listen to anyone outside of his opinions. Poleroid lost 600 million and Lan was fired. Poleroid was too confident in its own confined thinking.

Originals 18 Less Responsibility The bigger the family, the least responsibility the younger children need to take up. Explaining and Correcting Parents correct their children 50 times a day. (15000 times a year) Altruistic Personality Study researched all 400 people who helped smuggle Jews during the Second World War Holocaust. 21% of the 400 people's parents had explained why their childhood behavior was right or wrong. Phrasing of signs make difference. Doctors and nurses care about patients more than themselves. Behavior and Character Instead of praising a child: "That was very sweet" you might as well praise the child: "You must be a very good person." Children who received character comments were 45% more than those received behavior comments to share his toys with other children again. "Don't be a drunk driver" is much better than "Don't drink and drive." Why Parents Aren't the Best Role Models Jackie Robinson found his role model in a young mechanic. When children grow up, they need role models outside of family. Cheryl Sandberg and Jeff Bezos all had their role model in sci-fi "A Wrinkle in Time"--the girl who travels in time. Martin Luther King Jr. and Nelson Mandela all found their mentor--Gandi. Children who were read bedtime stories were more innovative. Harry Potter would be the major source of innovation for the next generation.

Originals 17 Born to Be a Rebel Jackie Robinson rebelled even when he was in the army. They are people who don't care what other people would think. Firstborns don't have to share parents with brothers or sisters and get a lot more of their parent's time. Among 1500 CEOs, 43% of them were firstborn. Non-firstnborns are more likely to drink or smoke, and they are less likely to have good insurance. A rebel is someone who doesn't accept the default. Niche picking Alfred Adler thought Sigmund Freud's theories didn't explain the part that brothers and sisters play in the development of one another's personality. Firstborns learn from parents. Non-firstborns learn from firstborns. Firstborns often take on the job of being a parent and give orders to the younger child. The younger child answers this by becoming a rebel. The niche of academic achiever is often taken by the first child. Once the first child has taken this niche, it is difficult for the next to compete. Jackie Robinson's elder brother Mack, who was five years older, won a silver medal at the 1936 Oympic Games. Jackie Robinson changed from running to basketball, football, and then baseball. In the realm of comedy, 44 of the 100-best comedians were born last. 20 were firstborn. Niche picking shows how younger children often try to be different from their older brothers and sisters.

Originals 16 How to Be a Rebel Birth order can affect people's desire to rebel. Jackie Robinson steals the most bases in American MLB. He is the youngest of five children. Journalist Robert Quillen commented for Jackie Robinson to become Major League Baseball's first black player in 1947 is his first bravest thing he had ever done. Jackie Robinson's attempts to steal that home base at that day is the second-bravest thing he had ever done. Younger brothers and sisters choose sports where there are more injuries such as football, rugby, diving, skiing, and car racing. Older brothers and sisters preferred safer sports: baseball, golf, tennis, rowing and cycling. Birth order doesn't affect only sports. Younger children were more likely to support Newton, Einstein and Copernicus. Researcher Frank Sulloway and Richard Zweigenhaft shows that birth order is actually more important than age.

Originals 15 "Occupying Wall Street" ended unsuccessfully because the name of the movement was too extreme. Anthony and Stanton joined a man who was the most vehement against African-American men vote right. George Francis Train was too vehement that Anthony's camp didn't succeed. Anthony again joined another most prominent figure Victoria Woodhull. Again Woodhull was too extreme in her advocate for women's sex freedom. Woodhull's extreme scared away most of the women suffrage advocates. Anthony had picked the wrong ones to build coalition for a second time. Enemies are better than frenemies Michelle Duffy, female professor at Univ. of Minnesota, found pair studies of police officers working with partners of different kinds. When partner supports oneself, there exists stress. When partner didn't show supports openly, there exists higher stress. Lucy Stone converted those young white juveniles into helping her give speeches in her tour. From Unknown to Known 5 Disney writers wished to write newer story than Cinderella and Snow White. It resulted in the most successful film in 1994, the Lion King. When the project began, Disney CEO asked the 5 writers to write lion stories with King Lear storyline. A woman at the back of the room, Maureen Donley, said it's Hamlet. CEO understood instantly what the storyline was going to be. Simba became Hamlet in the roll of a lion. Creating Coalitions Francis Willard didn't talk about suffrage but about home protection. Willard used religion a lot in her speeches which audience liked. Willard demonstrated that having right to vote, a woman became most protected in a violent family. Willard used Goldilocks theory well. Anthony refused to reconcile with Stone. 1890 Stone let her daughter and daughter's husband took over her leading role in the camp. 1893 Stone was dying, telling her daughter "make the world better". 1920 USA passed suffrage for the whole women in America.

She couldn't find anyone to help her in terms of Physics and Math. 2011 she won an invention competition. By the end of 2014, Perry's first wireless charger launched. That was because Perry's conversation strategy changed. She stopped talking about her wildest dream, the good of her zealous invention to mankind. She began asking people to help her build certain part of her project. The strategy worked. Instead of shocking people by unfathomable change of people's lives, one simply needs to tell people what they CAN do.
