Dr. Virginia Ramachandran - Advocating for the Future of Hearing Health

Dr. Virginia Ramachandran - Advocating for the Future of Hearing Health

Dr. Virginia Ramachandran is an audiologist and educational specialist who is currently the Head of Audiology at Oticon and the President-elect at the American Academy of Audiology. She works as an adjunct instructor at Wayne State University and Western Michigan University where she leads courses on amplification. She also spent nearly 15 years as an associate editor at Plural Publishing. Her clinical research has touched on student and professional issues.

    In this episode…

Most people would agree that there needs to be more emphasis on hearing health. However, the necessary policies and advancements are less accepted in reality. This makes it crucial for hearing health to be promoted in both public and private sectors. Few people are up for the challenge, but Dr. Virginia Ramachandran has taken up the mantle.

Dr. Ramachandran is an audiologist, educator, and executive who recently accepted the position of President-elect at the American Academy of Audiology. She has already advocated and trained at Oticon and now extends her talents to an organization that works directly to advance hearing healthcare. Now you have the chance to know exactly what that looks like.

Dr. Mark Syms has an enlightening discussion with Dr. Virginia Ramachandran, the Head of Audiology at Oticon, to discuss advocacy and how to improve the world of hearing health. They go through her work at Oticon, the AAA, and her experiences in the field. The two also touch on the issues with amplification, hearing aid coverage, and the current priorities of the hearing health community. Hear it for yourself on this episode of the ListenUp! podcast.

Dr. Jodi Sasaki-Miraglia - What is Hearing Hygiene?

Dr. Jodi Sasaki-Miraglia - What is Hearing Hygiene?

Dr. Jodi Sasaki-Miraglia is an experienced audiologist who has experience in medical devices, employee training, and general sales. She is currently serving in two roles: the Director of Professional Education Manager at Widex.

Dr. Sasaki-Miraglia previously worked as an audiologist at the Mayo Clinic and as the Senior Technical Trainer at Phonak. She received her doctorate in audiology from Salus University.

    In this episode…

We were all taught from a young age to brush our teeth as a basic part of hygiene. There are clear benefits to preserving your teeth and consequences when they are neglected. However, this same mentality is rarely shown towards our own hearing. It’s only once we’ve experienced hearing loss that we attempt to reverse the damage and by then it’s too late. So how do you help people prevent hearing loss?

Dr. Jodi Sasaki-Miraglia has worked in audiology, hearing education, and healthcare. She sees the issue as similar to other hygiene and deserving of the same attention. This includes regular check-ups, protective measures, and increased awareness. She has joined the movement to help others preserve their hearing and explains the best ways to do so.

Dr. Mark Syms invites Dr. Jodi Sasaki-Miraglia, the Director of Professional Education for Widex, on this episode of the ListenUp! Podcast to talk about what hearing hygiene looks like in practice. They discuss the current issues in hearing healthcare and the campaigns that have been started to counteract them. They also touch on Dr. Sasaki-Miraglia’s career and her perspective on hearing health.

Ep 111: Brain Hearing w/ Gary Dorf

Ep 111: Brain Hearing w/ Gary Dorf
Have you heard of the term "Brain Hearing"?
In this episode, Gary Dorf explains how your brain is what actually explains speech and how your ears are just the middlemen in this process.
What is even more interesting is how the Oitcon More device acts as your brain does and is trained to hear the difference between noise and speech. The brain learns by experience and so does the Oticon More.

Dr. Douglas L. Beck - Exploring the Science Behind Hearing and Listening

Dr. Douglas L. Beck - Exploring the Science Behind Hearing and Listening

Dr. Douglas L. Beck is a well-known figure in audiology and the Vice President of Academic Sciences for Oticon, a company that manufactures adaptive hearing solutions for the modern age. Dr. Beck is a prolific author on the subject, having 185 different publications to date. He’s been with the Oticon since 2005, where many of his research and publications were sourced. He also serves as an Adjunct Professor at State University of New York at Buffalo and the Senior Editor of Clinical Research at Hearing Review.

    In this episode…

Most people are able to identify the difference between hearing and listening, but how does it play out in a clinical setting? People who experience hearing loss don’t even know what they can’t hear, meaning there’s a failure to self-diagnose and understand the extent of their loss. For audiologists, much of their job is identifying that distinction and finding what the patient truly needs.

Dr. Douglas L. Beck has done considerable research and writing in this field, experiencing how hearing and listening play out differently across people. It has led him and his team at Oticon to challenge their preconceived notions and dig deeper into the science of it. Now, Dr. Beck explains his findings and his thoughts with you.

Dr. Mark Syms interviews Dr. Douglas L. Beck, the Vice President of Academic Sciences at Oticon, to talk about hearing loss and the distinction between hearing and listening. They go over the common problems they encounter in their work, the current technology for measuring hearing loss, and the overlooked factors that lead to dementia. They also touch on hearing aids and how they can be optimized. Hear the rest on this episode of the ListenUp! Podcast.

Ep 82: Reviewing Starkey's New Evolv AI with Starkey Rep Karla Castro

Ep 82: Reviewing Starkey's New Evolv AI with Starkey Rep Karla Castro

Today I sat down with Karla Castro, Senior Account Executive at Starkey, for a special feature on their new Evolv AI. Here's what you need to know!

In one word, the Evolv AI is "effortless." If you're looking for a top-of-the-line hearing aid, this is a great place to start.

Evolv AI is Starkey's new, diverse line of hearing aids that can meet almost any hearing need. They range from small, invisible hearing aids to more intensive ones. One great addition is Edge Mode, a feature that automatically scans the environment and automatically improves the user's hearing quality.

For loved ones that need additional support, Evolv AI can set medication and appointment reminders. In cases where a user falls down, it can also track the location of the incident.

Finally, the Thrive app is a great feature. It's a downloadable phone app that allows users to easily adjust hearing aid settings, access additional capabilities, and even locate lost hearing aids– all through the phone.

Ep 79: Starkey Livio Edge Ai | Hearing Aid Review

Ep 79: Starkey Livio Edge Ai | Hearing Aid Review

Is the Livio Edge AI Custom Rechargeable worth it? We break it down for you in this video. These hearing aids have a really unique feature called "Edge Mode" which uses artificial intelligence to optimize noise management and reduce background noise in challenging listening environments. You also don't need batteries for them- just put them on the base (which holds up to 3 days worth of charges) and they'll charge up. I'd definitely recommend these hearing aids to my tech-savvy and active clients. I'd also recommend them to people who have severe hearing loss.

But before you go out and get them, make sure to confirm they're compatible with your smart phone. https://www.starkeyhearcareindependence.com/hearing-aid-style/smartphone-compatible/

Ep 74: Tips on Wearing Hearing Aids with COVID Masks

Ep 74: Tips on Wearing Hearing Aids with COVID Masks

Today, we're giving you a 2021 mid-year update on what's going on with hearing aids and the mask. (1) We're seeing increased demand in custom hearing aids that only go inside the ear. That's because it can be uncomfortable and frustrating to wear hearing aids with your mask. (2) Some patients who get those custom-style hearing aids are feeling the "occlusion effect," which is when you hear your voice echoing or feel a vibration when you talk. (3) Once we stop wearing masks, just know that custom-styles also won't be as comfortable as the receiver-in-canal hearing aids that I recommend. If you’re wondering whether hearing aids are right for you, we can help! Our contact information is listed below, and we'd love to help you with all your needs.
