Danny P on Cars! Sliding doors with John Dyste - Selling Porsches, how leadership really sets the tone for culture (and success) and Emory Outlaws

I catch up with friend and fellow podcaster John Dyste.  John has one of the coolest jobs in the car world selling Porsches at Porsche Colorado Springs.  We explore how a chance visit on a weekend set his car career in motion.  Along for the ride was John's son Lewis who aged 10 knows more about cars than most adults!  Bonus episode coming soon with Lewis!

John Dyste, the Sales Guy at Porsche Colorado Springs and the co-host of First Dibs podcast. John dishes out his journey from childhood car enthusiast to becoming an authority in the field, with pit stops at city planning at Cornell and engineering at the University of Minnesota. His unexpected detour into bartending is a testament to life's unpredictability, while also adding a dash of humor to his narrative.

Fuel your fascination for luxury cars as we throttle through the lanes of Porsche models and car dealership stories with John. The hybrid Porsche 911 and the classic 1974 Porsche G-Series Outlaw are just some models that we peel back the layers on. John's anecdotes about the Pike's Peak Hill Climb, America's second oldest race, and amusing dealership tales - including a test drive catastrophe and a peculiar barter involving Tiffany lamps - guarantee a ride full of laughs and surprises.

Finally, we shift gears to discuss the exhilarating world of car enthusiasts. John shares his insights on the ongoing stick versus auto debate, his top choices for driving roads and track, and his favorite movie car. The conversation takes a philosophical turn as we talk about the joy of sharing one's passion and being a part of the automotive world. This episode is a tribute to all the car enthusiasts out there and a reminder of the importance of following one's passion. Tune in for a joyride with John Dyste through the fascinating world of Porsche!

Bambai Meri Jaan: 5 gangster films to watch before the Prime Video series
Movies based on the Mumbai mafia have often delved into Maximum City’s dark underbelly and presented nefarious characters through a rather unfiltered lens. While these outlaws, who are often based on real-life figures, commit despicable crimes, they are also depicted as victims of their circumstances – and their choices thus seem only inevitable if not fuelled by their survival instincts. These morally ambiguous stories of gangsters who are equally feared and respected make for a compelling watch. And these movies trace their life from their humble beginnings leading up to their devastating and tragic ends.

    • {00:04:06} - “The first time I published a zine was in 2015 and I was at a point of my editorial life where I really wanted to have ownership over my work, and I wanted to publish articles that were long-form and a little bit more thought-provoking.” - Melissa
    • {00:06:21} - “Your way out of algo chasing was to do something on your own and do it printed. Physical format is the way to free yourself from the algo because no algo beats handing out your zine to people.” - Brian
    • {00:12:52} - “Lovers and Outlaws really explores how our relationship status is and how we buy things, consume things, and choose products are interconnected and really it gets into modern marketing and also the five stages of consumerism, which are need for recognition, information search, evaluation of alternatives, purchase decision, and post-purchase evaluation.” - Melissa
    • {00:14:26} - “There are a lot of parallels between the way that we're shopping for products and how that informs the way that we shop for relationships today because they both come through the same device. And so the way you buy and the way that you consider purchases is very physically adjacent and maybe even mentally adjacent to the same device that you use to shop for and pursue a love interest as well.” - Phillip
    • {00:23:09} - “They say build products that you want to use and also build products that actually solve a problem. So being a writer for over ten years, I knew that there were outdated content management systems, there were outdated payment systems, and also outdated data storage. And I know that for a lot of writers, it's really hard to build a community, especially if you're freelancing and you don't really have the means to maybe start a newsletter list or continue to get recognition over your work. So I wanted to build a product that was totally decentralized for me as a writer.” - Melissa
    • {00:29:31} - “What I think we do differently at Future Commerce is we're reporting on our view of the world, and we have a lot of principles around that. I think that what you buy and where you buy it is shaped by who you are and who you're around. And I think you're exploring a totally different aspect of that through this concept of love, sex, dating.” - Phillip

    Water Margin (16th century)

    Water Margin (16th century)

Water Margin (水浒传) is one of the earliest Chinese novels written in vernacular Mandarin, and is attributed to Shi Nai'an(施耐庵).It is also translated as Outlaws of the Marsh or All Men Are Brothers. The story, which is set in the Northern Song dynasty (around 1120), tells of how a group of 108 outlaws gather at  Liangshan (梁山)Marsh to rebel against the government. Later they are granted amnesty and enlisted by the government to resist the nomadic conquest of the Liao(辽) dynasty and other rebels. It is considered one of the masterpieces of early vernacular fiction and Chinese literature. It has introduced readers to many of the best-known characters in Chinese literature, such as Wu Song(武松), Lin Chong(林冲), Song Jiang(宋江) and Lu Zhishen(鲁智深) to name just a few. Water Margin also exerted a towering influence in the development of fiction elsewhere in East Asia, such as in Japanese literature.

With us today is Professor. Andrew Plaks. He is Professor Emeritus of East Asian Studies and Comparative Literature at Princeton University. He is the author of Archetype and Allegory in the Dream of the Red Chamber as well as The Four Masterworks of the Ming Novel.

The shoes made of Wyoming Outlaw Big Nose George's Skin

In 1881, confessed murderer George "Big Nose" Parrott was hanged by vigilantes after he tried to escape from jail in Rawlins, Wyoming. While that was the end of George, it wasn't the end of his remains. Some of them were given to a teenaged girl, some were hidden in a barrel to be discovered in 1950 when a store was being built in Rawlins, and some of them were used to make shoes believed to have been worn by Wyoming's third governor at his inauguration in 1893.

    Chap.4 - Gamblers - Epis. 4 - Capt. Frank Hamer - Tales of a Texas Ranger

Emmett shares first-hand stories of cases he represented involving Capt. Frank Hamer, Texas Ranger. In the 1930s, Hamer arrested Austin bootleggers, and cracked a case involving the Sec. of State and Gammell's Book Store. Frank's brother D.E. Hamer protected Austin's Skillball game from extortion from a San Antonio gang. Frank's claim to fame was the killing of the notorious Bonnie and Clyde. In a friendly moment, Emmett asked Frank if he was ever afraid. His answer is telling.

These were exciting times for Texas and Austinites, and the Texas Rangers kept a lid on a boiling pot.
