Growing up in Beverly Hills with incredibly rich people, Dana wanted to be the cute, popular one. But, she lived in a $300/month rental with her mom and always grew up feeling less than. She had massive amounts of envy. This motivated her to work her tail off and get the things she wanted.
She always knew she wanted something big. Her dream was to be Barbara Walters because she loved interviewing people. She was obsessed with TV and knew she wanted to be in the industry. That led her to be one of the most successful and youngest casting directors at 26 years old. She had a panic attack speaking on stage as a casting director as she’s struggled with anxiety since she was 19 years old.
After two years of turning down jobs because she was afraid of having another panic attack, she said enough is enough and started her business as an audition coach by announcing it on Facebook.
In January of 2021, she spoke on her first Clubhouse room. She was nervous. Over time, she noticed she was growing and gaining traction faster than others on Clubhouse. She realized people liked what she had to say and how she said it. She started seeing herself as “me;”; someone who could make a difference rather than be a small fish in a massive pond.
Tangible Takeaways:
- Confidence is a skill you can learn.
- Too many people get stuck because they’re scared to start. Start anyway!
- Know that showing up online is going to be scary. Know you may get negative feedback and that’s normal.
- Get clear on what you do and be confident in what you’re talking about
- Be passionate when speaking: it’s contagious.
- Breathwork and slowing down has led to knowing herself more - try it yourself!
- Stop caring about the “no’s” and persist in getting what you want
- Lots of people may do what you do, but you are unique because of who you are.
- Envy is a human condition and a compass. Explore what it’s teaching you. Accept it. Examine why.
