Tracy Livecchi: Healing Hearts & Minds

Tracy Livecchi: Healing Hearts & Minds

Psychotherapist Tracy Livecchi, LCSW, joins Paul Cardall to discuss healing hearts and minds of people born with an illness that requires a life time of medical care. Both Tracy and Paul were born with complex congenital heart defects. Although congenital heart disease or CHD is the least funded of all major illnesses, CHD remains the leading cause of infant related deaths. However, because of advancements in medicine and technology millions of people have survived and adapt to what would be considered a normal life, although their lives have required a life-time of medical care and surgical procedures. They swap stories and go into detail about the miracle of life and how Tracy's parents were instrumental in working with doctors to secure her survival. Because of the lack of information for lifelong patients, Tracy and her colleague Liza Morton, PhD have written "Healing Hearts and Minds: A Holistic Approach to Coping Well With Congenital Heart Disease."

Knocking on Heavens Door with Author Katy Butler

Knocking on Heavens Door with Author Katy Butler
When he was 79, Katy Butler’s seemingly vigorous father suffered a devastating stroke. A year later he was outfitted with a pacemaker in a moment of hope. Hope: everyone deserves hope, no matter what hope may be. For Katy's family, hope meant getting dad back to where he used to be —a hope that could not be fulfilled. What you will find out in this episode with award-winning journalist Katy Butler is that a pacemaker can keep a heart going while the elderly patient slides into dementia, incontinence, and misery. As Katy wrote in her bestselling memoir, Knocking on Heaven’s Door, After the mid 1950's the attitudes of many doctors and patients shifted from faith in God and acceptance of death to faith in medicine and resistance of death. Please join us as we explore a taboo subject: love, caregiving, and quality of life versus length of life.

    Turning People into Devices

    Turning People into Devices

Outsourcing tedious tasks is a dream of many and at the latest Google Developer’s conference,  the audience beamed when Google Assistant booked an appointment. However, attendees were quick to worry about potential exploits those devices might face.

Medical devices are a good example of what computerized assistants might face in the future. Yes, medical devices can save lives and certainly serve a more noble cause than outsourcing tedious tasks, but the security aspect of these life-saving pacemakers and defibrillators still require firmware updates.

Seems that we still haven’t learned our lesson: embed security at the initial stages of design.
